Texas @ Texas A&M

Typical aggy. All noise early on, then just a whimper as their team (yet again) break their shriveled little maroon hearts.
I have to say though, looking at the crowd I was jealous of how packed Reed Arena was. I mean yeah, the top deck was empty, but to see how solidly filled the lower arena was for a women's game made me sad for us.

I am ALWAYS glad to see a big crowd for a women’s game. And especially glad for a win over the Aggies. I have 3 Aggy daughters and two worthless (with grins) Aggy sons-in-law…..and they have been hard to live with due to recent football fortunes. I’m feeling good today.

After Rori had that airball 3-pt attempt, they chanted 'Airball' every time she touched the ball for the rest of the first half, made it all the more satisfying when her play put that to rest.

Oh my, there's nothing more satisfying after a great win than to read all the wonderful and insightful comments from ya'll with coffee cup in hand. Still in a state of euphoria!:cowrose:

Bucksgal…..I’m with you. Second cup of coffee and nice Monday of introspection of a satisfying win. Nice to only have to fret about where Blair will wear those beautiful Longhorn Boots?. Did I see spurs on those? Gary Blair is one classy act. He is authentic in every way. Hate to see him leave coaching.

One thing I’ve noticed is that defenses are hedging Harmon hard to her right hand. She denied the screen and went left several times into the open center. But she is much less effective doing that. She’ll need to work on that as she’ll see more snd more of that until she makes them consistently pay. She’s quick as a cat on a hot tin roof to her right. Hey…..is there a song or movie idea there?

Yes, Gary Blair is one of very few opponent coaches I have respect for, and about the only aggie. Definitely a class act. Sad to see him depart.

He's the polar opposite of the childish antics and whining of the Sea Hag. Too bad we have to see more of her in the future.

Wherever he wears them, he's gonna have to make sure his pants are long enough to cover up the Longhorn!

I saw Gary. Blair about 3 years ago in Plano while both of us were watching a couple recruits. He happened to be in the concession line right ahead of me at halftime. I introduced myself and he couldn’t have been nicer and welcoming to the conversation. We talked about his team and the Plano recruits while eating our popcorn in the hallway. Just a warm conversation while both of us were grinning about the Texas/Aggy Rivalry. My main takeaway was how could a recruit not like him.

“A decision that the coach makes” was Vic’s response as to why Rori came off the bench. So there you have it…

Interesting takeaways from the press conference:
1. Our leaders are in boots now
2. They came to me and asked me to run certain plays
3. He was still confident in them down 8-2

Experienced a very similar encounter with Coach Blair several years ago. Awesome guy and very appreciative of WBB fans regardless of university affiliation.

Some observations from the game:

1. Reed Arena was very loud. After I got home I watched the SECN broadcast that I DVR'd. The broadcast does not do fair justice to how loud the arena was. I think the networks try to limit crowd noise so viewers can hear the commentators clearly.

2. Good turnout for the game, 7,100. Really good turnout for the student sections on both ends of the court.

3. I suspect about 15% of the fans at the game were cheering for the Longhorns.

4. That presentation of Univ. of Texas boots to Gary Blair at mid-court pre-game was really special.

5. Abbie Boutlier was at the game in burnt orange. You couldn't miss her.

6. Andrea Lloyd was gracious in taking a photo with my daughter.

7. I was pleasantly surprised that parking at Reed Arena was free.

8. I thought players sang the "Eyes of Texas" even at away games. Do they not do that anymore? The players celebrated on the court and then walked to the locker room without singing Eyes of Texas.

9. After leaving Reed Arena, a fellow Longhorn proudly blared the Eyes of Texas from his truck for all Aggies to hear. It was awesome!

One more observation I forgot to mention:

10. With about 4 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, the first Aggies started leaving the arena. I was surprised because of their 12th man tradition. With about 2 minutes remaining, they were leaving in droves. But kuddos to the student section for remaining all the way through.

In watching the post game press briefing, I once again get chill bumps listening to Schaefer. Three observations. One….the players have bought into the message. The body language of Matharu and Harmon is wonderfully in agreement with Schaefer. Two…..he mentioned “blowing” the Tennessee game. I’m still upset with that one. Less than stellar decisions and execution from players and coaches (clock and strategy management) down the stretch. Third…..Schaefer didn’t sign off with his standard ……Praise the Lord…and Hook ‘Em.

Yeah, I don't understand who he is talking about.

I don't even see Kyndall, Moore, and Kobe wearing boots the last few games despite being on the sideline. So, I take that as good news.

Wondering what folks thought of Joanne's play yesterday. When she hit the first shot of the game, a stop-and-pop mid-range jumper, my first thought was she's gonna have a good shooting/scoring game. But, she finished with 4 points after adding a couple of free throws.

Nonetheless, she played 36 minutes. She was 1-7 shooting, but I didn't find myself yelling at the TV for her not to take those shots; guess that means she was playing more in control. She added 2 rebounds, and 2 assists. And, ZERO turnovers; that stat will keep you in the game

Coach talked about her in his post-game. Guessing she helped clamp down defensively on Destiny Pitts and perhaps Kayla Wells.

After re-watching the game, I can't recall a game where so many of our players were hitting their jump shots, especially in the first quarter (after a 1-8 shooting start). Joanne, Aliyah, Shay, Audrey, DeYona, Lauren (hook) and Rori all hit at least one sweet jumper. The game of basketball really is much easier when you are making shots.

Kind of reminded me of our win at Baylor many years ago where Joyner, Lashann, Brooke, and Ariel all had unusually good shooting in the same game.

This is probably as good a place as any to report what Vic said at the fan luncheon last Tuesday.

A few posts in this thread refer to the Tennessee game. Someone asked Vic about his demeaner with the officials during games and his often heated exchanges protesting a call.

Coach says he is always going to protect his players from bad calls. If the official says he blew the call, Vic has no more to say. But if the official defends his mistake, Vic is going to educate him/her. He referred to several officials as "green tomatoes" who seldom see aggressive man defense in their typical games and don't follow the rules on what is a legal check.

Back to the Tennessee game. Coach said he has a "history" with one of the three officials who worked that game. He asked us how can Tennessee shoot (my numbers may not be spot on) 2 free throws in Q1, 3 in Q2, 2 in Q3, and 20 in Q4?

How can that happen? Vic was not making excuses, he pointed to a couple of our bungled block outs on free throws and poor free throw shooting. But he genuinely felt that game was poorly called by one biased official.

That brings credence to what a lot of us were saying. I believe I used the word “blatant”. So how are officials assigned to games?

Three “phantom calls” in the 4th and Tennessee was back in the game. I was there in Knoxville. My Vol friend said she had to agree. The Texan in me smiled and congratulated all the Vols around us, but inside I was seething.
