Texas @ Stanford 11/14

Watching Rori Harmon and Aliyah Matharu on the court together reminds me of the those scary back court duos at Louisiana Tech back in the day.
That's a pretty good comparison, Moooooo. You have to be old school to remember Leon Barmore's teams. They always gave Jody fits. The only reason I hate giving props to them is the Sea Hag was one of those guards who played for LaTech.

That was a fantastic win for us. Mostly freshmen and transfers, and we knocked off last year's champion, who lost only one player. I am surprised with all the negativity on this board, as a couple of people have said. Allen-Taylor is a vital part of this team. She has been in a bit of a shooting slump, but got better as the game went on. I have no complaints with anyone on the team. Ebo was super important, being physical down low and rebounding well. Moore has some great moves. I want to watch her develop. There are hardly any words for Harmon. What a blow-out performance by a freshman. She carried us most of the game. We certainly wouldn't have won without Matharu. She was a tour-de-force in the 4th quarter. Its does bother me that Hunter barely got in. What's that about? Can only guess. After her scoring in the last game, wouldn't she deserve a few more minutes on the floor? Obviously Vic has his reasons, but it is troubling.

We are a thorn in Stanford's side, with the win today and the win 2 years ago when they were #1 and the one 2 or 3 years before that, when we went to Maples and got the win when they were expected to be #1 the next week. Yes, there was the playoff game where we were backdoored to a loss. It is a good rivalry, has been since the 80's.

And, the majority were from the state of Texas to boot! Teresa Weatherspoon, Laquon Stallworth, Debra Williams, and Tamicha Jackson come to mind.

I can understand why folks are perplexed about lack of minutes for Gaston (15 minutes), Kyndall Hunter, (3 minutes) and Latasha Lattimore (4 minutes). It all comes down to defense, or lack thereof, IMO. None of them even had one rebound.

Lauren Ebo was once again a quiet hero despite not scoring a single point. She played 25 minutes mainly because Vic can trust her effort on the defensive end. Logged 6 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 assist (as many as Rori).

When she got in she fouled a three point shooter, and it was a pretty bad closeout.

Vic won't play her if she is a defensive liability, and she (like all her teammates) needs to learn that lesson early and learn it well.

Lattimore also had some break downs on communication and left Jones wide open for 3 point attempts early on. One thing that kind of worries me is that Stanford had a ton of wide open 3's that they didn't make. And a lot of those wide open looks were when Texas was scrambling in transition defense and not picking up their man. Outside of fouling on the close out when Texas was scrambling, I thought Kendall played good defense and was needed offensively. She's a bucket getter.

What I'd like to see going forward:

- more ball screens for Rori. Her jump shot is pure, and it comes in the soft spots of the zone defense. She doesn't need to drive it all the way to the basket and get blocked, unless the lane is wide open.

- less dribbling from Audrey; she doesn't have the best handles. She is best at moving without the ball; would be great at being the recipient of back door passes. Needs to take more shots from beyond the arc as she has a beautiful stroke. Don't think she needs to drive the lane against the bigs so much and get her shot blocked.

- if we are gonna run a dribble drive weave offense, it needs to be when three true guards (Rori, Ashley, Joanne, Kyndall, and Aliyah Matharu) are on the court; don't want to see it run when Audrey is in the lineup

- improved offense (duh). More passing and less dribbling (especially from Warren and Moore). Rotate the ball more and eventually someone will be wide open to take an uncontested shot.

No doubt.

Stanford shooting 4-27 (14.8%) is what really did them in; and, most were wide open, uncontested looks. Make a couple of those, and they win the game; or, don't take a few of them and try to work the ball inside to your taller, quicker post players and make a few bank shots.

At some point, you have to accept that your team isn't shooting the 3-pointer well and stop. One of those 4 makes was like NBA range from your 6'5 post, Ashton Pretchel with like 1 minute left in the game.

Rebecca Lobo has always been one of my favorite TV analysts. She was very complimentary of Texas throughout the entire game, not just the post-game.

Some of you I truly question wether your a friend or foe. This was a good win but Stanford has stuff to figure out as far at PG and playing against a physical team like us. JAT shots aren’t falling YET but if you a true fan you they are the same shots she took last year. As far as JAT & AW they are doing what we need them to do lead and defend. I’m the leader of the Hunter fan club but as I said in another thread until she play like VIC wants her to she will ride the pine like he did his daughter and Danberry at MissState. Ebo played great today she really anchored us with some rebounding and great block outs. Going forward some of yal that don’t really have true basketball knowledge just shut up and don’t type. Glad some of yal aren’t the coach and VIC is.

I would also add look for more ways to get the post players involved offensively. Especially in the low post.

:)
If I didn't know better, I would think we just dropped a blowout game to the National Champions. ON THE ROAD!

Gutty performance by all involved. Way to go Horns!
Correct!!!! We just beat the defending national championships who returned all but one starter and all their depth with a team of two returning starters and 7 new additions to the team. That defense we displayed looked like we were midway through the season and hitting our stride but we aren’t even close to that yet. Don’t want to get ahead of myself but we have a legit shot to go very far this year possibly farther than last season:hookem::fire:

Doesn't matter, but whoever made the point about Lattimore, Gaston, and Hunter not getting many minutes because of defensive problems. Probably true, but Lattimore and Gaston were at least in the game long enough to get a good look at. Hunter not even that.

It was me. But,, Lattimore got 4 minutes and Hunter got 3 minutes.

For sure.

We all knew we'd be outmatched in the post today. Lucky for us Stanford didn't take advantage playing 6'5 Ashston Pretchel (7 points), 6'4 Cameron Brink (6 points), and 6'2 Fran Belibi (4 points) more minutes and pounding the ball inside. Why Pretchel is out there launching 7 shots beyond the arc (making 2) instead of being camped in the low block was beyond me.

For us, Lauren Ebo is the only one who can hold her own (size/strength). Gaston, Moore, and Lattimore are different types of power forwards, and definitely not Centers. But, they can all contribute with different skills and will depending on the matchups.

I, too, am surprised at minutes distribution.

I’m not in charge so not saying it’s wrong just surprised. Surprised that Ebo played as much as she did and that Latasha didn’t play as much. And thought Hunter should’ve gotten more time. She made a bonehead play fouling on a three but still.

We’ve said it all before, but I don’t know how Audrey survives many games like this.

I just want our offense to have a bit more control on drives, put backs on offensive rebounds, and catching it in traffic under the hoop.

Loved what we saw from Moore!

Of course Rory and Aliyah were awesome.
We won, right? Perhaps Vic knows what he's doing?

Whew boy! I dread the meltdown on here when this team loses a game (Hint: they will).
I can only imagine the “disappointment” in Vic about minutes and starters THEN. Jeez!
Are you people at practice every day or is Vic? BTW, this was only GAME TWO and you’ve all (allegedly) watched JAT for how many games in her Texas career and you want to bench her. Side Eye

I’m out of the country and could not watch the game but recorded it. I can’t wait to watch such a dreadful performance by the Longhorns.

But I thought our offense stunk and the coaches don't know what they are doing, running it in slow motion.

It did and stalled out numerous times. Hence Coach put in Matharu with Rori to get it going in the 4th quarter.

I just don't like the dribble drive offense. And it's ok. I don't have to like it. I'm not the coach and I don't play for Vic. It works for him and he likes it! That's all that matters.

And some of y'all come to the board after the game and critique those of us who were posting live in the heat of the moment. We're posting what everyone is thinking in that moment. Take it as a grain salt. Boy y'all are a trip. I take the play by play calls on the forum like I'm sitting in the sports bar watching the game with my besties and we're joshing around about the plays. Yelling, cheering and screaming at the TV and each other. Drinking adult beverages and eating nachos and hot wings. Live game posting is not gospel. It's how we felt at the moment.

We love JAT and AW too but y'all know they need to score. They are seniors. They should stay ready so they don't need to get ready. Ain't nobody saying kick them off the team. We're just saying we need them to SCORE and play defense. Maybe coming off the bench would help them settle down and play ball when they enter the game. We're couch coaching like everyone else. Heck we know Vic knows what he's doing. We're just throwing in our 2 cents.

I invite everyone to come and post live with us. It's a blast!

Stanford was considered an offensive powerhouse coming into this game. Defense won this game. A full game of lockdown defense is what Vic needed from Warren and JAT, and that’s what he got.

Great game, ladies. Hot damn. I think we’ve got ourselves a team. :bevo::fire::hookem:

PLEASE STOP!!!! I'm sorry, it's so personal to me. But a thread with Leon, Weatherspoon and the Sea Hag so heavily featured is more than I can stomach. They were Jody's nightmare. Without them, there would be at least two, maybe three more banners hanging at the FEC. That's where my true hatred of the Sea Hag comes from. It's because of the era that she represents.

My first thought when the Statesman story on the SEC broke, the first two things that I thought of were that those damn aggy's were going to come and sully our building every year and we were STILL going to have to deal with that white trash, road house looking, stiletto wearing, bar fly twice a year.

I'm trying to be a bigger man. I'm failing. Gladly.

BTW, Tara has proven that you can win National Titles, win and lose with grace for the betterment of the game, and not look like a $2 drag queen. Just sayin. Great win Horns!! Great job Vic. Hook Them!

Joanne is OUT Of
CONTROL....

But they weren’t the same shots she has taken in the past....and that is the point. I’m certainly not advocating for her to be benched, but she was at times out of control offensively. She is a VERY cerebral player so she knows it. I love her tenacity and fire, but she at times forced the issue offensively and I’m sure she is aware of it. I think she was 3 for 16. She’s simply not the kind of player that can create her own shot easily. She has to play and take shots within the flow of our offense. As far as telling others to shut up.....well I concur with Cynt and it’s really not that serious. Everyone on here wants success for our team and that includes Joanne. I trust Vic 100%. He knew he needed help offensively to win this game, thus he turned Matharu loose. As others develop, our offense is going to be hard to contain...

Well how about that! I watched the game until mid-third quarter, then had to leave. Just got home and watched the rest on DVR. I thought the ladies were holding their own....but thought Stanford would start hitting their 3s and win by 5-10 points.SUPRISE! I’m not going to critique the individual performances. I AM just going to bask in the glow of a tremendous win. And enjoy the efforts by all the players. Staff and others. Way to go ladies! Cant wait till Volunteer game.
