Texas Rangers 2019 Thread

IMO, I see one more major trade in the wind. The Rangers have a glut of outfielders - Gallo, Deshields, Mazara, Calhoun, and Choo (when he's not the DH). Furthermore, if I understand the minor league reports correctly, the prospects that are closest to being major-league-ready are also outfielders. The outfielder with the highest rade value is probably Mazara - he's s proven hitter and an average defensive players, and he's young and controllable. If a trade with Mazara would bring some team's best AAA starting pitcher and a couple of good AA pitchers, I bet JD would pull the trigger on the trade.. An alternative would be a trade for a major-league-ready AAA starter and a hot catching prospect.

Any of you Ranger zealots have any thoughts on this?

Agree on Mirza, but it would probably turn out to be a trade they will regret. I would pay Choo off (they will have to pay even if they could find someone to take him) to open a spot up for a youngster.

Accumulating a bunch of young pitchers is a real crap shoot. Statistics will tell you most will struggle to make it to AAA so trading adequate ML fielders for young pitching is a highly questionable move.

Good point, Viper, but I'm not sure JD has much choice. They apparently are not willing to shell out big bucks for FA starters, and the current crop in the minors is not ready to move to the majors yet.

The last half of the 2020 season will determine JD's future (assuming 2019 is'nt so bad the owners have no other choice but to let JD and his group of non-baseball geeks go). The Rangers will flirt with 100 losses again in 2019, but everyone should be ready for that. The first part of 2020 the new stadium will be full of people wanting to see the stadium. However, by All Star time, the gawkers will have seen the stadium, and the real baseball fans will be the audience. If the team isn't at least competitive (solid 3rd place in the Division) everyone but the players (and some of them) will be gone.

Six weeks until pitchers and catchers report, and it doesn't look promising at all. I wonder what JD is doing - the Rangers barely have any starting pitchers to report to spring training! Surely there are some signings in the wind, but we hear absolutely zero in the local media here in the Metroplex.

HHD I was hoping you had found some information that I missed. My brother-in-law and I were pissing and moaning about this situation at the family Christmas dinner. I cannot begin to think what season ticket holders are thinking.

^Viper, I wish I had some news to talk about, but I can't even find a good rumor to discuss. Either there's nothing going on, or JD has put a lid on the release of any info at all.
The only interesting conjecture I've seen at all since mid-December is the rumor that some other teams have expressed an interest in acquiring Leclerc. That trade would make some sense - the fewer games you have a chance to win, the less the need for a top-notch closer. He has a lot of club control remaining before he gets to salary arbitration, which makes him very attractive to a current contender - and increases his potential trade value. If JD can get a good haul of top-level prospects for him, that trade would make sense. But if there are any talks going on, it's being done very quietly and not making the news.
Keep your ear to the ground and let us know if anything comes up!

So my wife casually mentioned wanting to go to visit her sister in March in Phoenix last night knowing full well what that meant for me and of course I said I'm in so long as I can get away for a few spring training games. She followed with a Louis from Casablanca like statement of "I am shocked, shocked to hear there is spring training at that time does that mean we can go" we both smiled and it looks like 4 days in Arizona so at least 2 or 3 games in Surprise or other venues will be on tap.

^Good show, FWHORN. Hope you have a terrific time. And when you get the chance to get up close and personal with JD, tell him to get on the stick - we Ranger zealots don't want to wait forever for a total rebuild! :smile1:

Texas signs SP Shelby Miller 10 years (and Tommy John surgery in 2017) after wanting to draft him. He went 0-4 with Arizona in 2018. He is from Brownwood so I guess the Rangers are hoping for a big Brownwood contingent when he pitches in Arlington. :whiteflag:

^More bargain-basement shopping by JD. If Shelby works out well, JD hits the jackpot for the Rangers. This doesn't add a lot to the payroll - sure hope they have a bunch more in the piggy bank for 2020 when the new ballpark opens.

Less than a month until pitchers and catchers report (well the catchers and a bag of MiLB and injured cast-off's anyway).

27 days until pitchers and catchers report to Surprise - and so far, I don't see a single reason to be excited about the 2019 season. I may not go to any games this season.

Other than spring training which is a different animal, I do expect that I will get out to at least one game if only to say goodbye to the park and it certainly appears that the Rangers are banking on that reason for why most fans will come out this year, to say good bye.

Of course with Paul McCartney and Billy Joel on tap in June and October at Globe Life maybe I will just go to those concerts as my goodbye and skip the pay to see minor league level ball from the Rangers pain.

Unless the baseball Gods smile on Texas and create multiple earthquakes in MLB, a great plan FW. When you know the chances of seeing a Ranger win at any time is less than 50/50, the only two home series that hold any appeal - the Cubs and the Cardinals.

Viper, HHD and all Ranger fanatics even with the pathetic moves by the Rangers this off season it would be great to have a get together at a game this season and put faces to names etc. I like the idea of the Cubs in April or Cardinals series in May as the choice.

Terrific idea, FWHORN - count me in. WorsterMan is local, also - I think he might be interested.

Any other Ranger Zealots out there - especially those in the DFW area - interested in this?

The Cubs series is a midweek series (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday) making it difficult for some of us, There is the Astros that weekend of 4/1 through 4/3 and one option is also reaching out to our fellow Hornfans who follow that team and perhaps doing Saturday April 2. The Cardinals series is the weekend of May 17-19.

Funny how the Billy Joel concert to close out Globe Life Park will be the second weekend of the playoffs. You gotta respect the "yeah we won't be playing then, so go ahead, Piano Man" balls on the staff.

They're actively trying to blow everything up for the first season at the new stadium. I don't see a problem with it, honestly. Miami is still in that mode with Jeter at the helm, but it'll turn around eventually. I kind of want them to use the Brewers as a mold for how to reinvigorate the team and the excitement around it.

The Cardinals in May probably is a better choice as early April can still be coolish to cold. The schedule before the All-Star Break really sucks.
