Texas @ OU 02/28/2024

Another ex-coach's opinion, much appreciated!
Enormous game for both teams and I'm sure the crowd will be rabid.
I only couached club ball in Dallas area for two years. My team went undefeated those two years but… much like Mulkey :yikes: I was hyper competitive and did not like the way I spoke to the young girls (middlle school age) or the refs during the games. The parents liked winning but they did give me a few looks at times and I don’t blame them. I couldn’t contain myself so I hung up my whistle and retired with my two trophies and a daughter much relieved.

Now I just coach from the sofa where I never seem to go undefeated :idk:

:ousucks: Hook ‘Em!

I truly don’t think it will be the three that gets us. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make a dozen. I hope I’m wrong. In my very humble, been a long time since I coached, opinion - the key to beating OU is limiting their points in the paint. With our team this year, I honestly can’t tell you if we do that with a zone, a man-to-man or a combination of the two. I wouldn’t want to see us press until late in the game. Punch them in Q1. Hang with them in the second. Punch the snot out of them in Q3 and then gas them in 4.

That said, I like our chances because when we are focused, we are very hard to beat. We will be focused, I am convinced of that.

I really appreciate the comments here from former coaches, players and referees. I learn a lot about the game as it has evolved and become more sophisticated, players have become so talented.

Pre-Title IX here, but went to the UIL tournament with my family (we had a hoop in our driveway) dating back to the final days of 3 on 3 ... because girls were too delicate to play full court, LOL. Also played on an adult rec league years later when we had two players who could dribble without looking at the ball. We had fun, despite our limitations!

Hook'em! :ousucks:

Did you throw chairs or choke anyone? :smile1:

lol. Let’s just say I understood what Vic meant when he said it always means more to us than it does to them. I was way too serious especially considering the age of my players.
As a player I rarely ever argued with an official in any of the sports I played, in fact I pretty much always kept a stoic demeanor. As a coach... totally different story. I was very much like Vic, and AT LEAST once was quite Mulkey-like. But like the two of them, my teams were always winners.

I don’t expect any coach/referee shenanigans tomorrow night. Jenny B and Schaefer seem to navigate the bad or no-calls well. Schaefer gets on the refs frequently but I can’t remember him saying the magic words that get a technical. It’s fun to look back at the antics of those on here who coached in their younger days. My evolution was player, then parent of a player(s), to thinking I could do better than the coach(s) so became AAU coach, to thinking I could do better than the referees who worked my team’s games so became a referee. At every step, I learned so much that I didn’t know. Now…..I recognize how little I did know and am ok with allowing all to err and learn on their own. As long as they are trying. Having said all that…..I am going to boo my TV on bad calls tomorrow night. Seeing it’s in land thief country, I expect to see a few homer whistles. Hope Schaefer can forgive em. Hook ‘Em.

Much respect for you as well. A lot of experience there to afford you a great deal of perspective. We appreciate your input.

So that's three ex-coaches here? I'm starting to feel a little under-qualified....

The OU game could not possibly be any bigger. Not only the regular season conference title hopes and #1 tourney seed, but a win could very well solidify a #1 seed in the NCAA’s (per Creme anyway). Things really fell in place nicely for Texas last week so hoping that trend continues and Texas takes care of business.

I think we are going to need a great effort by the team, and as much luck as possible. My contribution as a coach, which I am not, is that I think everyone should wear their lucky underwear tomorrow. I afraid that is best advice I can give.

Add 1 more to that former coaching list.
Back in the day a coach could get 3 technical fouls before being ejected. For what I’m sure was a legitimate reason to get on one referee during a bi-district game, I got two tech’s whistled on me at halftime.
Is that even in the rules? I found out that night it was.
I could possibly be the reason for the seat belt rule. :argue::argue:
Luckily we pulled out the win and moved onto the next round.
I settled way down after that.

For sure getting technicals at half-time is doable. Typically, it’s for what was said “right before halftime” but is administered prior to start of second half. Generally, coaches calm down while in locker room. However, it’s sure possible to get a technical(s) just prior to second half. I cant ever remember getting or giving one during halftime. There are administrative things that can get a technical called. For instance, not providing correct numbers/no numbers to the scorekeeper. That situation calls for two free throws prior to opening tip. However, sometimes it’s not discovered until a player with no number/incorrect number checks in. Years ago, in the boys game we gave technicals for dunking in pre-game warmups and shots were taken before tip-off. I’ve never heard of the three-technical rule! Last night in the Horns-Tech game, there was an administrative technical for throwing things on the court…..could have been a technical for every water bottle or tortilla thrown. When I was thrown out of an AAU game, I was given another technical for sneaking back in and watching from the stands. I’ve got lots of referee stories…..from police called due to fighting in stands, to fans throwing chairs on to the floor, to having to separate parents from attacking my partner, to having to be escorted by police to cars after an especially passionate boys game in a small west Texas town playoff game…..one of the best games I ever officiated. Chasing rabbits now…..I’m hoping tonight’s game is full of passionate fans, coaches screaming, a few technicals given, and the best……I’m prognosticating a 9 point Horns win. Don’t be late to the 6 pm tip-off. Cant wait.

If OU plays their best game and we follow Coach plan on defense and score the ball like we have this year, shouldn't we win this game?
I'm all in Texas. :bevo:

...It's especially tough without a player like Rori who can apply that suffocating pressure at the top...
  • Against Rori last season in 2 games combined: Tot - 7 points, 0 assists, 5 turnovers
  • Without Rori in 1 game: 14 points, 10 assists and 0 turnovers
I know it's a small sample to compare and ways to take away what Tot did earlier this season have already been discussed - this is me still mourning losing Rori.

Ha! We have us a winner. That's a majestic level of crazy right there. :trophy:
LOL!!!
I once got tossed coaching softball and suspended from the field for the next game as well. No problem... I went through my normal warm-up routine with my team right across the street in a open lot, gave my pre-game talk, and watched the game from across the street while my gals put a run rule whoopin on the other team. :smokin:

Back to our regularly scheduled programming...
Well it's two hours until tip-off and I'm feeling very antsy.
