Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ

snow's ran out at about 9:58 a.m. this morning.

tootsie said "somebody squealed on me."

didn't get to eat anything, but talked to some aggie ol' timer about lexington. when he found out it was my first time there, he pointed to his friend, then at me, and said "this guy ain't been nowhere, has he?"

looked like a pretty cool place. have to go back sometime.

By the time we got to Snow's the only meat left was sausage. It was real good. I just wish the other meats were still available. One of the locals I was next to in line said the pork is out of this world.

I live about 15 minutes from Lexington on 112 and will go there as soon as I can. Once I go I will report out as well. I am usually disappointed with my expectations set high with ranking like this so hopefully my tasting will be worth while.

Oh, and I went to Mann's today (have never been). Pulled pork was greatness (although I only had a sample--roommate had the actual sandwich), jalepeno sausage was greatness, pork loin was good but a little dry, brisket (the "little bit of flavor" version) was scrumtrulescent (and I'm not a huge brisket fan unless it's chopped and on a bun). Sides were meh.

I would recommend.

Can someone tell me why Railhead in Ft Worth doesn't get any respect in Texas Monthly? Their meat is consistently good. Maybe a BBQ expert can explain it to me.

My three contributions to the thread are as follows:
Kerrville- Big Earl's
Sealy- Hinze's
Flatonia- Joel's

That is all.

Any BBQ list that excludes Crosstown in Elgin is a joke.

My top picks in Texas:

- City Market in Luling
- Crosstown in Elgin
- Cooper's in Mason

Other notables definitely worthy of Top 50:

- Rocky Creek BBQ on Hamilton Pool Rd near Bee Cave
- Jim Bob's BBQ in Bee Cave

Litnin & GakFoo, I have been to Ruby's & House Park..... and honestly my favorite in Austin is Rudy's. Yes Rudy's the chain. They tend to their meat and it is excellent.

TheFied...I agree that Rudy's has consistently good brisket. The rest of the meats I've tried there are just so-so, in my opinion, but their sides are good. I still prefer RUBY's and House Park. Another one worth mentioning is Smokey J's at 620 and 2222. I've gone there for years for their sliced brisket sandwich or their combo...brisket and ham. They really stack the meat and it's cheap. They also sell some killer Jerky.

I am VERY glad to see Schoef's getting some props. This is really goog Cue in Belton. For thoes who drive I 35 on a regular basis this place is just west of the interstate. My wife and I go there on a regular basis and it is consistently good. Sorry to say, but MUCH better than Coopers, which indeed has fallen off. I am one here to talk about my BAD experiences there.

Final word here.... David's in Pantego (Arlingon) no place I would rather go for Cue.

I see that the Church in Huntsville made the list.

Any best of bbq list that does not include the Church is wrong.

And I agree with the earlier poster that Texas Monthly is so full of themselves it is ridiculous. They have about as much of a clue about what is going on in Texas as I do nuclear physics.

The magazine should be titled "yuppie scum that portray Texas as they wish it was".

I'd have to agree with Rico on this one. I would also add that for a big city Houston has pretty underwhelming BBQ outside Thelma's on Live Oak and maybe Burn's

I agree that in general, Metroplex BBQ is far behind other areas of Texas. But someone posted Main Street in Euless, and I'll second that place. Great, great stuff.

I recently stumbled onto a great little BBQ place in Sherman called Cackle & Oink. Good stuff.
