Texas @ Mississippi State 02/27/25

That was tough sledding. Holle just about won that game single handed. And Jak in the first half. When Booker and Harmon aren't hitting, we have big problems. I don't see how MSU has a losing record in the SEC. They were darned good tonight. It was tough to see them drive on us so easily. One on one defense in the paint is not our strength. Good driving teams are a problem for us. I don't like us being number one.

When Booker and Harmon aren't hitting, we can rely on Holle and Jak. That isn't a sign of big problems, it's a sign of awesome depth and flexibility.

I told you that they were going to get beat. The offense is just not very good.
I would think that you, of all people, would recognize the difference in bad offense and really good defense by the opponent. I get it though... you're still bitter even after five years have passed.

Great game plan by Mississippi State. I've got to give them a lot of credit for their defensive and offensive strategies. Both teams played really physical and excellent defensively.

We made some good adjustments at halftime to slow down that post slipping quick to the basket.

Offensively we did some better overloading against their zone in the second half, and thankfully Holle got hot from downtown. She and Jak really saved us tonight. That's a good sign when others can step up like that.

I felt pretty good when we finally got a 10-point lead, only to have Rori make two uncharacteristically poor decisions that allowed them to cut it back down to five points. I don't know what she was thinking.

Mississippi state is very well coached and better than their record. That guy is like Vic in the sense that he can compete without having a roster full of big tme recruits. The rest of the coaches in the SEC better hope he doesn't start getting some.

Texas only had 12 turnovers (which is the limit Vic is ok with), but Mississippi St only had 10 in an unusual circumstance for the Longhorns.

Shooting 7-14 from the 3 was huge tonight. Way to go Shay Holle

Notre Dame just lost at home btw

It's that time of the year in these major conferences where wins get tougher to come by.

What was that zone? Seemed like a modified 1-3-1, with special rules for Maddie. Whatever it was, they didn't have an answer for Jak. But to be fair, if Jak is going to start hitting alley oops, a lot of teams are going to have fits trying to guard all our weapons.

On 2/4 I posted about the impact of Jak as a starter for Amo. At that time, I felt like she had the capacity to fill those shoes in both scoring and rebounds. I think she is still inconsistent in her scoring, but so are Booker and Rori. Tonight she came up big in the first half with scoring and big rebounds, and that was the kind of play we counted on from Amo. Good for her. Congrats for a really great game and for keeping us in the game in the first half, and for adding real value to the starting five. Way to wait your turn while you improved your game. I'm just really proud of her tonight, we really needed every point she scored. I hope she keeps it up down the stretch, and that Shay does the same. If memory serves, Shay has, in the past, taken it up a notch in scoring just like she did tonight when we head into tourney time. Every team needs every body. Way to find a win Horns!!!

If you watch that zone carefully, they were extending out to the perimeter trying not to give up wide open shots, but also had like a "rover" to double up on Booker or the inside players. It was very effective cutting off the things that it was designed to cut off. But who they weren't paying enough attention to was Jak and Shay... especially Jak. Both stepped up in a big way and made them pay for it.

Also, congrats to Jak for a double-double and going 5/6 from the line.
