TEXAS-KSU Game Thread 2023

@bystander the team needs to play with the assumption we’ll have this blatant B12 ref bias against us and play that much more focused and disciplined.

lol but we can't catch the ball when our arms are blocked. no cliched coach speak about fighting through it enables our guys to tackle when they're being held in place. obviously we have to keep our cool, but you can't ask WRs to magically get arms added that aren't held down.

Sark on the non-PI calls, "We know we are not going to get those calls so we are not going to talk about that." He gets it.
I understand not getting close/judgment calls, but the two non-calls on Worthy were obvious pass interference and an obvious defensive holding and/or pass interference (either should have been called) and both directly affected the outcome of the play. That is not"just not getting those calls", that is the refs intentionally ignoring the call to give the other team an advantage. Moreover, at least on the first PI the official cannot possibly miss that the ksu defender wrapped up Worthy a full second before the ball arrived. He wasn't going to call anything no matter what, his mind had been made up for him. This is what it is like for Texas at home, it is going to be worse the next two weeks on the road, and we already know how the island of forgotten toys commissioner feels about the Sand aggy game.

Watched the game again. Thoughts:
  • MM hasn't shown any improvement since Spring. His "good" passes are typically scripted plays that involve throwing to a spot on the field and his "bad" ones are basically the same with no presnap read. His footwork rivals that of Michael Vick's redshirt freshman year at VT, but in a bad way, because the rest of his arm and athleticism can't cash those checks. He had several throws with his feet squared at the receiver. Like a 3rd grader in Pop Warner. I get the sense that too many QB coaches and trainers are saying "hey it works for Pat Mahomes so go for it!" to find the next big thing. MM ain't it.
  • Because of the aforementioned problems, the staff didn't do a good job putting pass catchers in place to help MM out. It was literally "get open Mitchell" instead of creating mismatches with Sanders (who probably had the best route of the day on the 4th down call before the FG to go up 30-27).
  • Watts and Taaffe should be publicly flogged for that Brooks TD at the end of the 3rd quarter.
  • Speaking of Brooks, I just replayed the play of his sideline catch with like 4 min left in the game. KSU should have been called for no fewer than 3 offensive penalties on that play. Whatever.
  • Complementary Football Awareness Memorial Fund Award of the Game: inability to pick up one damn first down after the missed FG. Yay for 27 seconds off the clock! 3rd and 3 needed to be something with a little bit more "oompf" to it. Something that would get Worthy involved.
  • The LBs are constantly out of position on 3rd/4th down zone calls. They're so worried about giving up something behind that they drop too far and let KSU convert the 4th and 6 on the final drive. It's far better to come up and force the QB to make a read that involves passing the ball THROUGH you, like pretty much all of Ford's INTs these past couple seasons.
  • KSU's first offensive play in OT exposed PK. It was a zone blitz with Ford coming up and Sorrell going back, and neither of them hit where they were supposed to be. So without even blinking, KSU already had an advantage. Howard's smart enough to figure out that he had no fewer than 2 guys open on that play. He went with the sure hands guy over the middle, and I figured we were doomed at that point.
We were lucky to come out of that one with a W, but at least it's a W. There was maybe only one path in the multiverse for KSU to win after we went up 27-7 and had a 97% chance of winning according to the ESPN predictor. KSU nearly found it. They're coached well enough to take advantage of mistakes, but not well enough to call the right offensive plays apparently.

As bad as our calls were the non call on Stoops was worse. Defender instead of pulling the arms down just pulled the whole player down and out of bounds. The fix is clearly in. Hopefully it won't matter but look for more PIs in the next 3 games.

So we held a physical rushing team like KSU to 30 yards rushing. Had two 100 yds rushers of our own, ( almost, Baxter had 90) a receiver with 150 yards, a 27-7 lead in the 3rd quarter and still almost lost in overtime.

I know. This happens sometimes in football. Especially when you lose the turnover battle. But this happens to us all the time. It’s crazy!
And no amount of bad reffing can explain it.

Watched first half and noted two things on the non field goal series. If Brooks goes full speed for the corner instead of looking for a cut to go for the TD he makes the first down yardage and if Red doesn’t drip the ball he hits a wide open Sanders (which I think was the play). But as the saying goes “if ifs and buts ….
I think that series cost us a lot more than three points.

The bottom line is that we don’t play 100% the entire game. Everyone gets relaxed including Sark when we get ahead. Everyone it seems is only playing hard so they can then relax. Probably the wrong mindset to have. Trying to get momentum back is like climbing up a muddy hill.
Sark needs to keep them up and he needs to keep stacking points when he can get them.

I disagree with the first sentence. I think our players play tough and hard to the end. What changes in the 4th quarter when we are ahead is that 1) the other team abandons the run and starts passing 3/4 of the time to catch up.
2) Coach K decides to play "prevent" soft coverage, move LB's further off the LOS, and our soft zone is very vulnerable to any team with a decent QB (like TCU for example). Coach K doesn't pressure the passer with 5 or 6 rushers (often rushes only 3) so our opponents complete pass after pass driving easily into the red zone. We will be vulnerable to inferior teams overcoming our leads until K runs an aggressive pass rush in crunch time.

Wow! Horrible!
Did we win this game?

I’m pretty sure we didn’t stay in the same coverage on all these comebacks. Houston, K-State, OU. If it was only that easy.
The pattern here is Texas vs OU 30-27
Texas vs KState 30-27 ,Texas vs Houston 31-24 all with the other team having the ball with a minute to go in position to win the game.. We won 2 of them but could of lost all 3 or won all 3. Texas is superior to all 3.
At Alabama we never let off because we knew we couldn’t afford to let off.

You can’t just start the game and start passing on Texas 3/4 time because we are engaged and fresh.

Creek,

I think we played very soft coverage in the later stages of each game—a prevent style—rushing as few as three and no more than 4 with our safeties and linebackers deep. Allowing each opposing QB to sit back unmolested and allowing receivers to find open space.
Unbelievable, yes. I didn’t want to see it, but I saw it.
All we needed was one sack on Gabriel and it’s game over.
Same with ksu. And they marched down and send the game to overtime.

Why not do both? Play man on 4-5 receives, and drop the LB back into zone (and QB spy) and just rush our 2 DT’s who are unstoppable. Can’t believe I have to fix everything around here.
