Texas hosts Tech Sat.

Recruiting is definitely not a science. Japreece Dean was ranked 78th in the ESPN top 100 and the 24th best point guard in the nation---nice, sounded like a good mid-level talent, but not sensational...but offensively, at least, she played way above our MacDonald's All Americans. Hit the three, took it to the basket, shot off the dribble and on the run. We'd be way better off if we had her, at least if she plays like that all the time, and I gather she does. And she's from Cedar Park, our own backyard! I don't remember her name mentioned in all the recruiting talk a couple of years ago. Was she an early commit to Tech? Did we make a run at her at all? She's one that got away.

She did not play on a Nike team, she was number 78 . I wish people would get these rankings are paid for. If you notice every MDAA plays or had played for a Nike sponsered team. Texas players or recriuts play for Cy fair. Even one of the 2016 commits who's AAU team was adidas , is now Nike. Its all fake . If you look at espn rankings and prospect nation rankings , Dan Olsen runs both . Why are they different. Some kids are true to the spot they earned. I have been watching Dean since 9th grade. She has always been that good and will get better. People don't just shoot up the rankings in girls baskeball with out a little help. Texas gives the chance to the highest ranked player earned or not. Its just the politics of recriuting and keeping jobs. Some of these players believe they are the superstar they were wrote up to be. Some reallly are . Holmes is a true number on , had always been . Suge has really worked on her game. Underwood should be ranked higher, but her parents would not play the game and buy into the hype of her playing this summer so fast after acl tear recovery for Nike team so watch how she gets treated when she comes. Just like Foman . She had ESPN ranking since 8th grade . That same three stars been there since 8th grade . Look at the club team on ESPN Dallas showtyme. She and Atkins have played on that team since freshman year highschool. She was a much a part of Duncanville wining as Atkins but when you started only hearing about one . Now all of a sudden that person was the key to Duncanville . Foman should have gotten MVP 2012 state she had 21 points next highest player had 17 . But they got MVP cause media picked it. And those are facts I was fowarded the email UIL sent explaining why highest scorer in every other game got it and foman did not . Davenport was coming to Texas so I guess fair went out the window. Keep thinking all these four and five star players are the real deal and these three and less star players are bench warmers . Teams are going to be just loke Tennesee seven MDAA players who play like Luby all americans. Texas really does have good depth , but if you only boost the confidence of some and kill the confidence of others . Well one reaps what he sows. Dean should get FOY but if the prediciton turns out to be true... well deep pockets gonna always win . Hard work will mean nothing. Not venting you just look like a person who looks with your eyes and not follow the stars.

Dean is not the one who got away. She was not an early commit. She was in Texas own back yard and no one ever even peeked over the fence because she was 78th . Texas already had five MDAA two for 2015 who were early commits there rankings had already been paid for. One 2016 commit is hurt for her senior(I hate that, cause she such a great player and even sweeter young lady) but MDAA rules say you have to have played 8 senior games. Well we will see what will happen. I just hope she rehabs and takes her time , she is a exciting player to watch in person

familyfan, you sound like you know your stuff. Obviously some---or a lot of it---is politics and hype. Be that as it may, one would think good coaches could see beyond the hype and evaluate an obvious talent like Dean, especially when she plays 15 miles down the road. I'm not blaming the Texas coaches. People make mistakes. Maybe Dean was an early Tech recruit and Aston was just getting started. I don't know. Times were tough, and they did pick some kids like Brianna Taylor and Lang who weren't rated at the top but turned into very good players. I had a question in an earlier post about Underwood. You say you've watched her and she's underrated, so maybe you can answer. Can Underwood shoot? Does she have a good long range or mid range jump shot, or does she mainly take it to the rack?
We need shooters. Some successful coaches do seem to have that ability to pick out the less heralded but talented players. Iowa State and Oklahoma always find a few good outside shooters, not superstars but good smart offensive scorers. Mulkey seems to have that talent, too, though she also gets the top rated ones.

The coaching staff has known about Dean for a long time. They know her family really well. Her dad still works for one of these recruiting services and has a good relationship with the coaching staff. So to say that the coaching staff didn't even peek over the fence isn't true. My guess is that they didn't go after her because of the guards that where already committed to us early in Brooke, Ariel,Tasia, and Lashann. Not to mention the guards who where already on the roster.

I've also seen Jada play as well and she is a very talented player. If Coach Aston uses her the right way she could be a match up problem just like Joyner for many teams. She's athletic with broad shoulders and depending on who's guarding her can take them down to the low post and score. She can also step out and shoot the three. And that's what has impressed me the most with Jada, she's a solid spot up three point shooter. Think of a bigger, stronger, Brianna Taylor with better range who can play on the wing at the 3 and can also play some power forward.

It always comes back to Tasia doesn't it. Do me a favor, go look at the rosters of the top 25 teams in the country. And give me the players who are Tasia's size at 5'3 or 5'4 with that type of slim body who are either starting or getting a ton of playing time. I guarantee you there aren't many who are even on top 25 teams rosters at that size. One of the only reasons that Brooke has thrived and been successful at that size is because of her ability to shoot the ball at a solid level. That is something Tasia doesn't do well.

When you're at that size playing at the high D1 level you have to bring something to table other than being able to slash to the basket. Because at that size, on that level, you won't be very successful playing that way. Unless you can also shoot the ball well from the perimeter, or be a true point guard who makes others around her better. Just like the Franklin kid did at that size for a&m a few years back.
