Texas-Baylor Game Thread

Color me "impressed" with the progress the defense has made this season. Yes, they missed a couple of assignments today - but they played with great intensity. And most of the time we saw Burnt Orange jerseys swarming to the ball carrier. Look forward to next season and continued improvement.

Every stat in the book disagrees with you.
Really hard to compare era's and even players because they don't play alone. It's not like tennis. Bijon has done it with below average OLs and below average QB play for most of his 3 years. To me that's what makes him so special. To me Earl and Ricky are the top 2 and you pick the order. BR, JC, and Ced just slightly below that but not by much. Ced's one weakness was he didn't have breakaway speed but the dude could carry a heavy workload and get stronger and stronger as the game wore on.

You have to remember even though Ewers is a redshirt freshman he missed his senior year of HS. If you think that he sucks you have to understand his lack of experience is the problem, not lack of talent.
It scares me that he reminds me of Garret Gilbert.

I call BS on lack of experience.
He had a full season on the practice field at tOSU before coming here.
That's a top tier program with top tier coaches.
He went through spring, summer and fall camps on the 40 acres.
He's started all but 3 games due to injury.
If he's not getting it by now, when will he?

I agree with this. I pick my order among the two on ypc, total rushing yards, and receiving yards. Others, many, many others will always pick Earl simply due to sentimentality, tradition, and also for his clearly greater NFL productivity. That's all fair too.
At the end of the day, it's kind of like asking a guy to pick whether he likes his wife's left boob or right boob better. It's really hard to make a choice, but there is no wrong answer either.

Yea, I'm satisfied. 2 weeks ago I hit the first game I'd been to in a decade so it was really a bummer to finally get to DKR and the team never showed up at all on O. But these last 2 weeks to just impose your will against someone and ram it down their throats sure felt good. Especially against Aranda who is a damn good D coach.
Agree that Aranda is a good D coach and appears to be a good coach in general. Without Bijan, we are a mediocre team. Found some of Sarks post game comments intriguing. He said that he went back to plays installed during spring because they were having issues with off sides and blocking etc. This screams much like some of the pk defenders that it takes 2 years to learn a system. Both of these things baffle me. When you look at our ol just missing blocking a guy that levels Ewers and you just wonder what happened to the DKR days of line up and beat the man in front of you. I do agree with Sark that we are not just better in wins but a better team. We are not TEXAS yet and hope these guys can get us there. I heard something like 29 sr yesterday? Thats a lot so plenty of opportunity for young guys and portal guys. Lets cheer hard for ku today.

No one was better than Earl.
Earl spent three years lined up behind the qb in the wishbone where he could only go left or right of the center. Now check out his senior year where he ran out of the I formation and could go anywhere including catching the ball. Multiply his senior stats by four and look at the numbers you get. Same for Leaks.

I think Ewers underperformed this year. And it baffles me that Sark didn't put Card into the game to start the 2nd half against Okie St. and TCU where Ewers was having his two worst games of the season.

To answer your question, "when will he?" show that he is getting it, I think Ewers will be much better 1) as the O line matures and can pick up blitzes and stunts; 2) when Ewers himself is able to read disguised blitzes, thus audibling to a play that defeats the blitz; 3) when he gets more comfortable scrambling to gain yards when that opportunity arises.

I hope, if he is the starter next year, that his ability to hit the deep pass improves. For the Horns to contend for the final four playoff spots, he will have to hit the occasional deep pass. We have to be able to punish defenses that constantly mug the LOS in order to stop the run and defend the short passes.

Maybe when our OL gives him the same amount of time that the Bailer QB had in the game we just watched. If you recorded the game, go back and look at the difference in the pressure Bailer put on Ewers and the pressure put on Bailer.

Look at Sam Elinger's freshman year, remember the Pick he threw against TTU that allowed them to come back and win the game? How about the pick he threw in OT against Okie light in OT that let them win the game. Sam had a lot less pressure than than Ewer's has had to endure.and Sam turned out to be a pretty good QB as I recall.

Old65 I see your point. QBs get better and young QBs make mistakes. but if the game is on the line and I had my choice of QB, I’d take Freshman Sam over Ewers every time. Ewers was hopelessly rattled lost and confused in a few games whenever we needed a play from the QB. It’s a good thing we found our run game

Baylor OL was holding like crazy too. If we played like them we’d have 100 yds in holding penalties from big 22 refs. Yes our OL can improve in pass blocking but Ewers Pocket presence needs improvement too

True. However, whenevr Robinson was met with two defenders in the backfield, he looked like an average RB. When Brady has pressure immediately, he looks like an average QB. Just look at the Bailer game film. Bailer’s QB had a lot more time than Ewer had. Check the box score and look at the difference in yards lost by both QB’s you can see the difference in tn qB pressure.

You QE haters that think Card is the clear choice at QB, please explain how we lost to unranked TTU.

Overshown was out a half. Ojomo didn’t play.

The most critical possession of the game. 4 downs. 1 pass that was maximized. 3 runs. No first down. No fault of the QB.

Bijan never lost a fumble with Quinn out there.

So, before he seriously injured his neck against Colorado being hit by friendly fire after an interception (at the end of his freshman year), Cedric was faster and had more moves. After that, he bulked up his neck a whole lot and changed into a power back, excellent at that in college and in pros. But before that injury, he was more similar to Bijan.

He was also real good at showing a leg and then pulling it back making guys barely get a hand on him. Anybody that gets 5,500 yds rushing in 4 years is doing something right. When Simms threw that INT in the 2001 CCG he hurt Mike Williams and Ced as they collided trying to make the tackle.

Forgot about that play - triple kick to the cojones with the pick and two All Americans knocking each other out of the game. Bad day in the Longhorn Nation.

So you are saying their are other factors that affect a game outcome other than QB play? Tell me more.

Anyone heard or read any update on OG Cole Hutson? Paper said he will have an MRI but it didnt state when.

I talked with a his Dad at a game this season, super nice guy. He said Cole was pumped to be starting and was very excited to be a Longhorn.

Prayers for good news and a speedy recovery.

Perhaps. One consistency in almost all losses of the past two years was failure to use all resources and easy reads during our stretches of poor offensive production.

Jet sweep to Worthy like we saw yesterday is an example. Failure to use Whittington. Failure to Keilan. Two back sets. Diamond formation. It worked yesterday too but think we only saw it once. A lot of it disappears. That’s on Sark. Obviously there’s lack of execution, but it’s short on easily executable plays too.

QE majorly screwed up the Bijan TD play buys one of about 60.

But you’re getting me pissed about Tech and OSU.
