Texas at West Virginia May 6-8, 2022

I
Ivan is a sure fire first rounder and maybe top ten pick. His decision to come back is going to pay off well into seven figures over what he would have earned had he gone pro last year.

Meanwhile in the misery loves company category, yesterday it was South Carolina blowing a 7-0 lead to aggy and losing 13-12 when they gave up two five run innings late and then two more in the bottom of the ninth to lose. Aggy had already won Friday night and is riding quite a streak of series wins in the SEC. That series loss in Columbia by Texas is not aging well and right now aggy looks like they will be a 10-12 seed host for a regional. Schlossnagle is way ahead of even the most optimistic schedule aggy had for him.

It doesn’t matter where we play, if we are good enough and I know we are, then we will beat whoever we need to get to Omaha.
Part of the magic that I know of Texas baseball is that whenever I think they have no chance, they rise to the occasion and it propels them deep into the playoffs. I will admit, they have been trending the wrong direction this year but the talent none the less is still there to do immense damage in the post season. Its going to be funny to see who they get paired up with cause NO ONE is going to want them in their regional, even Tennessee.

Zach Bravo (WV pitcher) pulled after recording 1 out. He took an infield hit from Hodo off his right hand to start the game. 2 runs in and 2 on with 1 out T1.

This is so our schizo pitching staff. Morehouse puts down the top of the order 1-2-3 and now has given up 3 runs so far to the bottom of the order.

Looks like another game where our batters can’t keep up with our terrible pitching. Hopefully not, but gonna need probably 10 runs at least.

Stephens sits down the top of their order as did Morehouse. Its the bottom of their order we cant handle. Still 5-4 Horns going into T6.

Annnnd we leave em loaded as Murph strikes out and Ardoin flies out. Big boost for their bullpen. We are leaving a *lot* of RISP.

Harrison got impeached after 1 AB. Olivares time.
5-4 Texas bottom 6th . Bases loaded .No outs

They get a bases-loaded double to plate 3 runs. Still nobody out in B6 and we are on our 3rd pitcher. I dont hear the announcer asking how we lose a game anymore.

We waste a leadoff 2B by Messinger. We have left 10 runners on now and I believe 7 of those were in scoring position.

Edit - its actually 8 RISP left on.

One more hit by Texas with RISP and similarly one less hit by WV would have won it.

Small glimpses of greatness from this team but we are who we are. Needed a sweep to offset last weekend’s embarrassment, but we just don’t have what it takes.

Gotta find that 3rd and 4th starter.

I wonder why Harrison and Olivarez aren’t given the shot to start…?

The only thing Harrison did today was give up an infield hit on an impossible to play bunt. And then Coach took him out…. After one batter. Stevens has been wildly inconsistent lately. His ERA will be ugly after this game. Make him a middle reliever that can go plenty of innings. Morehouse is good as a midweek starter, going plenty of innings against inferior opponents. He doesn’t look like a weekend starter—yet. Maybe next year he will.

Definitely need to get bullpen roles sorted out before tournament time. Get the right guys in the right roles and this team can still go to Omaha - but not as currently set up.

Kinda late in the season for that. I just know what they are doing is not working.

So, do you think Coach's thinking is: "I can't start Harrison, because I've got to have somebody for middle relief--and he's just about it?"

I say start Harrison as our 3rd starter--that's 3 really good starters by the numbers. And baseball is supposed to be a stats/data driven game. Let Stevens be first man out of the pen for middle relief, followed by LBJ and Olivarez. All 3 of those middle relievers will have to go 2-3+ innings as needed. Nixon's still our closer, despite the struggles he's had this year. If we just do that alone, I'd favor us to win our regional, unless we're in Knoxville. Morehouse will have to be our 4th starter. He's probably better than most teams' 4th starter, but he's just not a weekend starter type--yet...

With 24 pitchers on staff surely there are a couple guys who can give a couple good innings at a time. He can't be that bad of a pitcher recruiter.

LBJ and Olivarez seem capable.

And…When Southard is on, he’s smokin’. But control issues pop up sometimes. Also, IMHO, nobody gets jobbed by the umps on this team more than Southard. He just doesn’t seem to get the calls on the corners of the plate. Lots of his strikes are called balls. He’s been a hard-luck pitcher. It’s as if he flipped off the ump and insulted the ump’s wife before the first pitch or something…. Sure I’m biased towards our guys, but I can’t think of another pitcher on our team who gets repeatedly jobbed by the umps like Southard does.
