Texas (17-8; 6-8) leads the series 64-29 over Tech (15-11; 5-9). Texas will be seeking their fourth straight win over the Lady Raiders. Tech will try to snap a three game losing streak to the Horns. Texas won this season’s first matchup 55-44 at home. With two more shots, Texas would have had the same number of shots attempted as points scored: 55. Tech did take 44 shots to score 44 pts.

Amber Battle (# 12, 5-9 Sr. G) and Ivonne Cook-Taylor (# 2, 5-8 RS Soph. G) are the scoring leaders for the Lady Raiders. Battles averages 16.1 ppg, (4th in the league) while Cook-Taylor is 23rd in the Big 12 with her average of 10.0 ppg. Rayven Brooks (# 11, 6-0 Jr. G; 8.2 ppg), Kelsi Baker (# 41, 6-0 Sr. F; 7.1 ppg) and Dayo Olabode (# 32, 6-2 Fr. Wing; 7.1 ppg) are the other main scorers for Tech. Ionna McKenzie (# 42, 6-2 Fr. C) has the best shooting percentage at 54.5%. But she has only taken 11 shots in the 13 games she has played in. Brooks at 41.9% (39-93) from the field is the only other Lady Raider over 40%. The Lady Raiders are third in steals (119, 8.5 spg) with six players in double digits: Brooks (21), Cook-Taylor (20), Battle (17), Baker (16), Roe (13) and Spears (12).

Battle and Brooks have started all 14 Big 12 league games. Those two plus Cook-Taylor, Olabode, Spears, Roe and Ryann Bowser (# 4, 5-8 Jr. PG) have played in all 14 conference games. Baker, held out from one game due to injury/illness, and McKenzie have played in 13 games. Those 12 players average from 33.1 mpg (Battle) to 12.1 mpg (Bowser). Battle is the only Lady Raider to average over 30 mpg although Brooks comes close at 28.8 mpg. Eight of those nine have at least 2 starts in the 14 league games. The starting lineup for the past two games has been Battle, Roe, McKenzie, Cook-Taylor and Brooks. Two games ago, McKenzie replaced Olabode who had started the previous 12 Big 12 games.

Ariel is the leading scorer at 10.1 ppg. Imani (9.5 ppg) and Kelsey (9.1 ppg) rank second and third in scoring. Imani (56.4%), Kelsey (51.4%) and Nekia (52.5%) are the leaders in FG%. Horns have six players that average 6.7 shots per game or more. Ten players are averaging at least 11 mpg although Nekia (11.1 mpg) has not been available the last four games due to injury. Imani, Nekia, Brianna, Krystle, and Celina average in the teens.

Projected starters based on the last game:

Texas_________________TTU
Brianna (5-9 Soph. G)____Roe (5-10 Jr. F)
Kelsey (6-5 Soph. C)_____McKenzie (6-2 Fr. C)
Brady (5-11 RS Jr. G)____Brooks (6-0 Jr. G)
Brooke (5-4 Fr. G)______Cook-Taylor (5-8 RS Soph. G)
Ariel (5-11 Fr. G)_______Battle (5-9 Sr. G)

Battle and Cook-Taylor are the main scorers for Tech. Stop or slow them down and you take away up to 47% of Tech’s offensive firepower. Once again, Texas’ 3pt defense will be tested. Tech drained 11of 20 treys in their near upset of Baylor on Wednesday night. They slowed the game down and shot 3s. Like KSU, another small team, they play slow down, deliberate offense. The question will be if they sub Baker for Roe in the starting lineup. That would give them more heft and size inside. With Olabode in foul trouble in the first game, McKenzie played 14 minutes. She has started the last two games. That gives Tech another player at 6-2 to either bring in off the bench or gives them the option of starting both to get more height inside. Tech is number two in 3pt defense and will try to clamp down on Brady and Brooke. They played a zone last time Texas and Tech played. Texas has gotten better at playing the zone. Having Brady and Brooke hit 50% from BTA has helped. Tech is likely to swarm inside when Imani or Kelsey get the ball as happened in the first game. They will look to take away any room for moving from Imani and Kelsey and frustrate them by swatting the ball away when it is brought down.

Since the Horns’ win over Tech in Austin on January 17, 2015, Texas gone 3-6 but 2-0 in their last two games. Tech also went 3-6 with a 2 game winning streak snapped by a loss to Baylor at Lubbock. Tech lost that game to the league leading Lady Bears by 67-60. Texas lost their home game versus Baylor by 70-68. With both teams playing much better than in the first game, this should be a game to watch for fans although it could cause a few gray hairs for the coaches. Texas has been shooting much better in the last few games. Tech has been playing with a lot of confidence in the last few games. Horns should dominate the rebounding but Tech’s quick hands will present a problem for the Horn ballhandlers. Horns will go inside while Tech will shoot the three. Texas will try to establish a fast tempo, not necessarily quick shots though. Tech will slow the game down and milk the shot clock. Regardless of the Texas guards hot shooting from the perimeter the last few games, Tech is still likely to play zone defense most of the time as they do not have the height to match up inside. Tech was very successful in the first contest in slowing the game down, probably more thatn they wanted as they only got off 44 shots.

Game time is 3:30 PM Saturday. Radio will be Radio: 103.1 FM iHeart Austin. Television will be FOX Sports Southwest / FCS Central. On TWC in Austin, the channels are 54, 318 & 374.

Horns will be playing in back to back "PINK GAMES" supporting the battle against breast cancer. They had their pink game vs KSU on Wed and Tech will be sponsoring their own pink game today. :hookem:

Horns tip it off in about 20 minutes.
For the Horns, depending on the outcomes of tonight's games, winning this game could mean being either in a four way tie for third or a three way tie for fourth.

Let's go, Horns! Time to knock the Lady Raiders off their black mount! :hookem2:

pretty small crowd, spread out, though. Probably a bit less than we drew against KSU this past Wednesday.

Horns gone cold and getting TOs (5). Tech taking advantage with Horns still up but only by 12-9.

Tech's Baker has hit 3 from BTA and leads all scorers with 12 pts. Tech up 17-16. 8 minutes to go. Horns playing at Tech's pace.

Horns having trouble on the boards as Tech is doing a good job there. Imani should be shooting two FTs after this timeout. Horns up 23-21. Our posts are having a very hard time getting touches, much less scoring.

Horns up by six at the half despite a very herky jerky looking offense. Hitting 46% from the field. I am really surprised by that. Didn't think we were close to that. Tech has been very effective in slowing the game down and forcing Texas into their pace. Ariel and Brooke leading with 7 pts. each. Imani has four pts and Kelsey has not scored.

Horns need a strong finish to put this in the win column.

Well, make that Texas is up by 8 pts, not 6. 31-23 per gametracker.

We also have to stop trying to get the ball inside by any means necessary if the post player doesn't have good deep position and is not one on one don't try to throw it inside.

that's a sloppy start to the half by both teams. Kelsey with a block and gets a layup and fouled at the other. :hookem2:Shooting a FT after this timeout.

Tech making a push, down 36-31 with 13 minutes to go. We really need to get our posts going. Or hit some outside shoots.

Texas keeping it a bit more interesting that I would like. But no question that Tech has certainly improved since the last time these two met. Still, Horns are up 40-33 with 12 minutes to go. Let's go, Horns. Time to put the hammer down. :hookem:

good series for Texas. Baker picks up her fourth foul and Krystle sinks a 3 when Tech collapses on Imani. Good kickout by Imani.

I keep thinking we're going to put a bit more distance between us, but TT keeping it interesting. 7 points now....would love to get it to double digits, and keep it there!

Imani needs to convert both these FTs. She is getting the ball in excellent position but getting fouled before she can shoot. She has been hitting one of two pretty much every time. Hopefully, soon, these will be "and one" situations.

Good thing we are getting stops because it seems that we are only making one of two FTs. and we give up two quick baskets.
