Texas-Army Game Thread, Part Deux

Tucker starts the inning off with a first-pitch grounder to second and is out at first.

Cummings quickly behind versus Loy, 2-0. Loy makes good contact on a 2-1 pitch but the second fielder is well positioned to make the play. Two away.

Torres chops the first pitch toward short. Three gone, inning over.

On to the 2nd ...

Bats seem asleep again early with three meek grounders, I think the Army pitcher threw 6 pitches that inning.

Koenigsfeld stares at strikes one and two. Next pitch is rolled to third and Torres makes the throw to first in time for out No.1.

Polchinski immediately in an 0-2 hole. Jungmann freezes Polchinski with one right down the pipe for strike three and the second out.

Jungmann looking much better this inning. He's quickly on top of Fleming, 1-2. Next pitch is a ball that evens the count at 2-2. Fleming then lifts a gentle fly ball to left that Hernandez squeezes for out No.3.

To the bottom of the 2nd, Army leading, 2-0 ...

What is it about this odd left handed pitching that throws our guys off? It is like they have never seen it before. Very weak bottom of the 1st.

Better second for Taylor, now lets get some runs. Come on horns, hit this guy.

Belt leads off the bottom of the second for Texas. He works the count full, fouling off a pair of payoff pitches, before sending a hooking fly into left that Army can't get to. Belt sits on second with a leadoff two-bagger. Clark up.

Clark drives the first pitch he sees to center, scoring Belt. Man on first, no out, Army's lead trimmed to 2-1. Keyes up.

Keyes lays down a textbook bunt that the pitcher fields. Clark moves to second, Keyes out at first. One down. Rupp up.

Rupp lines a 1-0 pitch to center for a single. Clark is hold on third, putting runners on the corners with one out. Rowe up.

Rowe shows bunt for the safety squeeze, but the pitch is inside for ball one. Rowe swings mightily on a pitch away for strike one. Rowe lays down a beaut of a bunt along the first-base line; Cummings fields, checks the runner on third and throws to first. Ump rules Rowe out, but I thought he was safe. Bang-bang play. Rupp moved to second on the play. Two outs, Hernandez up.

Cummings misses on three straight pitches; count is 3-0. Next pitch misses outside and Hernandez gets a free pass to load the bases. Moreland says the "zone is tight" today.

Conference on the mound. Army leading, 2-1, with the bases juiced, two outs and Tucker ready to dig in the box. Much to VirginiaHorn's dismay, Moreland gripes about the umpiring.

Ball one to Tucker. Ball two. Shortstop comes over to settled his pitcher. Moreland expects Tucker to take all the way. Cummings misses inside, ball three. Next pitch paints the outside corner for strike one. 3-1 pitch is grooved for strike two. Tucker fouls off the first payoff pitch. Holy ****, did the runners go early on that one!!!

Tucker grounds the next pitch deep to short, who scoops it up, jumps and pivots, trying to make the throw to first in time. It's not. TWO RUNS SCORE but Hernandez is caught in a run down between second and third and tagged out. The inning ends, but not before the 'Horns take the lead, 3-2.

To the 3rd ...

Its hard to criticize the best college coach in the game and one of top three ever but I really think Augie may be overcoaching here, lets hit this guy we are small balling ourselves out of the inning.

And he was safe at first dang it.
