:tcu::tcu::tcu::tcu::tcu::tcu::tcu:

We take on the #23 ranked TCU Horned Frogs at the Disch this weekend. After so many road games, it will be good for the Horns to have a home stand.

Friday, Aptil 8 at 6:30 pm LHN
Saturday, April 9 at 5:00 pm ESPNU
Sunday, April 10 at 12:00 pm ESPNU

The Frogs performance thus far in 2022 is good, but not great. They're a marginal Top 25 team, and don't look like some of the better TCU teams we've faced in recent years. Still, this is a nationally ranked team, and taking this series from them will look really good.

TCU is currently ranked 5th in the Big 12 in team batting average, batting 0.272 as a team, right behind OU.

TCU is currently ranked 4th in the Big 12 in team ERA, with a 4.44 staff ERA, right behind WV.

For comparison, we're batting 0.325, and our staff ERA is 3.54--both 1st in the Big 12.

Big 12 Conference

Based on innings pitched on the season, some of the pitchers we are likely to see include: Riley Cornelio, Marcelo Perez, Brett Walker, Cam Brown, Luke Savage, and Caleb Bolden.

RILEY CORNELIO

RHP
6'3" 195 lbs
3.10 ERA
0.95 WHIP

Here's a good pitcher. Cornholio is TCU's staff ace. The pro scouts like him. He throws the fastball in the mid 90s, may occasionally touch upper 90s.:fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire: Slider at 86-87 mph, and a good, hard-to-detect-when-throwing changeup in the mid-80s. Likes to come inside and works the inside corners a lot.

Riley Cornelio is a 2019 RHP/MIF with a 6-3 185 lb. frame from Monument, CO who attends Pine Creek HS. Athletic projectable build, plenty of physical projection remaining. Multi-part delivery with some energy at release, 3/4's arm slot, very fast arm coming through. Fastball topped out at 93 mph [in high school], move in there, mostly straight. Slurve type breaking ball with hard spin, can get on top of curveball more consistently but it has quality spin. Maintains arm speed very well on his change up, will be a good pitch for him. Keeps improving every time we see him. Excellent student, verbal commitment to Texas Christian.

Cornelio was one of the nation’s premier high school prospects to decide to head to college last fall, and he was off to a good start for the Frogs in the spring. Cornelio’s command was an issue early on with seven walks and six strikeouts, but he also tallied an 0.87 ERA in 10.1 innings. Cornelio has a very projectable frame at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds and the stuff continues to come together. Cornelio has an electric arm with a fastball in the 92-94 and up to 95 mph range from a good angle. He also showed a curveball at 82 in the spring, while also showing a power slider at 86-87 and a changeup in the mid 80s. The talented righthander isn’t afraid to challenge hitters on both sides of the plate, and expects to take another step forward in the spring as the Frogs are tweaking his arm action to make it a bit shorter.

MARCELO PEREZ

5'10" 180lbs
RHP
2.16 ERA
1.11 WHIP
15 Strikeouts
7 Walks

Perez comes from Laredo. Fastball in the mid 90s. Good slider. Decent change up. Has good numbers in sort-of limited action this year. Posted a 1.23 ERA in the collegiate Summer League for the Amarillo Sand Dogs.

Marcelo Perez is a 2018 RHP/2B/OF with a 5-11 160 lb. frame from Laredo, TX who attends John B Alexander HS. Medium athletic build with square shoulders and room to get stronger. Lands closed in his delivery, spins off his front side, will need to improve direction to release, has a very fast and loose arm, tight 3/4's arm slot. Fastball up to 93 mph [in high school], mostly arm side due to his mechanics, gets some running life at times. Short breaking slider acts as a change of pace. Very good athlete and will have a chance if he can make the adjustments. Good student, verbal commitment to Texas Christian.

Perez is a talented righty who can pound the zone. He works tall and drives downhill with a strong lower 1/2. Arm is loose/effortless as he finishes with extension. FB climbs into the low 90's as he keeps the ball down in the zone. He mixes in and out and can hit spots. Slider has 10/4 shape with good bite, showing to be a sold out pitch. Changeup has sink/tail complimenting his FB well. Marcelo is a projectable RHP who will throw strikes and work deep into a ballgame.

BRETT WALKER
RHP
6'3" 204 lbs
4.89 ERA
1.47 WHIP <-----

Grad Transfer from Oregon, where he put up pretty good, but not exceptional numbers. It seems that Walker goes on streaks where he's nearly unhittable, then he slumps.

Brett Walker, a right handed pitcher from Oregon, should provide TCU significant weekend production. Walker is projected to be TCU’s Sunday starter after recording a 6-3 record with a 3.66 ERA last season in 83.2 innings pitched. Catcher Michael Petrie is transferring from Washington, and has provided Kurtis Byrne with significant competition behind the plate.

LUKE SAVAGE
6'1" 200 lbs
RHP
1.53 ERA
0.93 WHIP
19 Strikeouts
3 Walks

Savage is a really good reliever with some impressive numbers. Fastball in the lower 90s with some sinking movement to it. Good slider, and decent changeup.

Savage has a projectable, athletic frame at 6-foot, 175-pounds. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a loose arm swing and a smooth, repeatable delivery with more velocity likely to come in the future. Savage throws a sinking fastball... His slider is sharp with tight spin..., and short 11/5 downer shape. Also shows good feel for his changeup that he threw occasionally at 75 mph with fastball arm speed. With his loose arm swing and ability to pound the strike zone with good movement and feel for three pitches, look for Savage...

CAM BROWN
6'3" 215 lbs
RHP
5.55 ERA
1.62 WHIP

26 Strikeouts
14 Walks

Fastball up to the mid 90s. Good / very good breaking ball. The pro scouts like him.

Cam Brown could be one of these guys that the pro scouts like due to a high upside. But, for now, at TCU, his pitching has been pretty pedestrian and his numbers aren't so great. We've seen guys like this before... (not naming any names...). Also, reading between the lines, at least one scout makes him sound like a jack-of-all-trades with lots of pretty good pitches, but not one great pitch to ride. Putting it all together, this pitcher has some good stuff in his repertoire, and we might see him in the Majors some day, but he's not someone to be scared of on the mound, in college, this year.

Right-handed pitcher Cam Brown is the 61st-best prospect in the draft, according to MLB.com, and he is considered to be North Texas’s best prospect.

Strengths
Brown’s fastball and slider are graded 55/80, and the two pitch combine good velocity and movement to fool batters. He throws these pitches from a three-quarters arm slot. The fastball usually sits in the low-90s, but it tops out at 96 MPH. It has good sink and running action, as well.

His slider features good two-plane movement while sitting between 78-82 MPH. His slider was working as a plus pitch at the end of the showcase circuit, and it gives him a good combination at the top of his repertoire.

He also sports a changeup that is not far behind the fastball and slider in terms of quality. It sits in the mid-80s, and it can get swings and misses. If his development continues as it is, that repertoire can get him into the middle of a MLB starting rotation sooner rather than later.

Weaknesses
Cam Brown is a solid prospect who will make a good addition to any farm system. It can be argued that his ceiling is not as high as other pitchers in this tier of the draft. Brown does not have any grade higher than a 55/80. However, there are prospects like Justin Lange who will be available in this part of the draft. Lange has a grade of 70/80 on his fastball, illustrating that it has elite stuff.

This, of course, is a nitpick on Brown as both pitchers have overall grades of 50/80 and Brown has better control right now.

Damn fine scouting on TCU BB Chop...as usual! Including most welcome hot co-eds!

Those 3 starters are all studs and will be a serious challenges for our hitters. All have pretty low ERA's, except Walker who is 4.89...

Anyway, they have not faced a team as hungry and talented as UT at DF Field this season !!! Plus home crowd will be loud & rowdy!

I think Cornholio is a really good pitcher. I’m not sold on the other two. Of course, that probably means we’ll shell Cornholio and the other two will nearly shut us down…

Big 12 Baseball Weekend Preview: TCU vs. Texas, OU vs. OSU

#23 TCU at #7 Texas

If you can only watch one series this weekend, then this is the one to watch. A top 25 matchup always comes with high stakes and there is plenty on the line here in this series. TCU is fresh off a disappointing weekend against WVU and is looking to bounce back in a big way. Tommy Sacco, Brayden Taylor, and David Bishop have been on a tear this year and look to continue that against a good Texas pitching staff. Speaking of pitching, TCU will shake things up with their weekend rotation and they have a tough task ahead facing a solid Texas lineup that includes Ivan Melendez and Murphy Stehly. There is still plenty of games left but this could end playing a huge part in the Big 12 title race down the road.

TCU baseball: #23 Horned Frogs Head To Austin To Face #7 Longhorns - Sports Illustrated TCU Killer Frogs News, Analysis and More

Weather conditions in Austin this weekend are predicted to be pleasant to warm with temperatures in the mid 80's. Saturday and Sunday could get interesting with predictions of strong winds coming in from left field to home plate with gusts up to 36 mph.

While TCU fans have been enjoying the show put up by CF Elijah Nunez, 3B Braydon Taylor, 1B David Bishop and SS Tommy Sacco at the top of their lineup all year, the Texas Longhorns boast one of the best lineups in the country. UT 1B Ivan Melendez is currently ranked the #1 1B in the country by D1baseball; who ranks SS Trey Faltini #2 at his position and C Silas Ardoin #4 at his. Add the #14th ranked SP in the country in the form of Friday starter Pete Hansen and it becomes clear why UT was preseason #1 and currently sits at #7 in the country. TCU boasts the #3 ranked 3B in the country with Braydon Taylor.

Frogs' team batting average is 0.272.

Frogs' runs scored on the season are 215--3rd place in the Big 12, right behind us (we're at 255). So this offense is pretty solid. They've got 4 guys batting over 0.300, so they're going to put some base runners on the bags. Also, they're 2nd place in the conference in walks drawn--190, we're at 151, so they're some picky batters. We've got to throw strikes.

Sacco is good. Put him with Vanzetti and there will be a riot.

B&B look pretty tame compared to some of the stuff out there now that's geared towards adolescents. They were basically just funny, moronic, cartoon juvenile delinquents.

Pretty tame now, but at the time (& place... W. Texas) it was rather radical for some folks.
