TCU Joins Big 12

the only reason tcu hasn't whined about ut is they haven't been in the big 12. you did notice patterson's absurd whine re smu yesterday did you not? you'll get your whining alright.

however, on a positive note, i notice where tcu is downsizing their stadium capacity to 40000 in anticipation of the big move.

found this on texag

When I said that it would solidify the TV contracts, what i meant to say is that, it is my understanding that the new TV contract is voided if we as a conference fall below a certain number of schools. ( I can't remember if it is 8 or 9). Ags leave and we drop to 9. Mizzoo leaves ( possibly) and we are down to 8 and the tv contract is voided. TCU plugs a roster spot, that's all. (Not gonna rehash the argument as to whether they are an upgrade or a downgrade...) Once the tv contract is voided, no school will join our conference. It's kinda like my son's flag football team - Each team has 6 players on the field. You can play with 5 and be short handed, but you forfeit if you only have 4 so you get your out of shape dad out of the stands to play...(and my hamstrings are still sore!)

If bringing TCU into the conference helps keep the conference alive, then there is another benefit. Aggy won't be able to say: "See, we left the conference and it fell apart." It would feed their over inflated, delusional view of their own self worth. Kinda like the employee who quits and believes the company will fold without him - and is disappointed when they are able to stay in business.

And as mentioned by someone in a previous post - it will be nice to replace a whiny conference member who wants out, with a grateful one who wants to stay.

Just checked the NCAA website, and I see that the TCU avg home attendance jumped up from 38K in 2009 to 42K in 2010. Not exactly great attendance numbers for a perennial powerhouse.

Pac 12 deal isn't that far above the big 12. Read an article yesterday that said schools will receive 15M this year. Pac 12 deal will increase each year and ultimately average 21M over life of 15 year deal. I like our chances with the tier 1 deal due in 2015-2016.

And TCU is back down to around 35,500 this year. TCU does not draw. No TV either.

But they're ours now. Again. I thought we were through with them. Guess not.

Starting next year, TCU will get smash-mouthed down, very likely with a losing record in conference play.

And TCU will be ho-hum boring by the end of 2013.

How swiftly the bloom is leaving the rose.

Zona Horn and others worried about TV contracts, don't you think the BigXII conferred with their TV partners and the lawyers before offering TCU? I would think that would be a requirement, or at least, professional courtesy. I don't think the BigXII would jeopardize the thing that's paying the bills . . .

It's not really the current contract that I think is the point of discussion, for the most part, although Texas' Tier 1 and 2 "take" under the current contract will be certainly be reduced as weak sisters continue to be added, and as such revenues will very soon become shared equally.

I mean, it's no coincidence that Texas (and now OU) want to limit conference membership to 10, instead of 12. The babies in the nest do get hungry, and must be fed their million dollar bills.

It's future contracts that will be hugely negatively impacted since TCU brings virtually nil additional viewers to TV networks interested in selling advertisements to turn a profit. In short, virtually no one watches TCU football that isn't already watching Texas or Oklahoma. Thus, a school like TCU will have no impact on FOX or ESPN when TV contracts come up for renegotiation. FOX and ESPN could care less who wins or loses football games, they only want to sell advertisements.

With respect to Tier 1 and 2, Texas has come almost full circle back to the days of the SWC. The little Texas schools like TCU made a living off Texas, Arkansas, and Texas A&M, taking their full cut of TV revenues that were actually earned by the big 3 schools. Texas had bills to pay and so in '92, Texas jumped at the chance to cut out some of the deadwood when the B8 came calling. Remember, the B8 wanted to add all 8 SWC teams, but Texas said "no, these 4 only."

What Texas is gambling now, I guess, is that the LHN will be such a huge success that the LHN will more than make up for what it gives away to the little schools (other than OU) in Tier 1 and 2 revenue sharing.

Texas is banking that Texas and OU, all alone, can carry a conference of zombie, non-money makers (they need someone to play, after all), that their Tier 3 networks will become virtual gold mines, and from Tier 3 will come the huge money.

It's never been tried.

Maybe it will work. Maybe it won't. We'll have to wait and we're going to see.

Thanks for the explanation, XOVER. I see more of your concern now. I guess it remains to be seen how much the overall product is diluted over time.

I can't imagine being the Big East comissioner. Add Navy and Air Force? That's all they have to choose from. Bleah. They are now basically a non-football conference.

Well there you go, an opportunity to replace one traditional game with another.

Texas always scheduled the Horny Toads for the first Saturday in November. This ensured no one missed a good Texas football game on the opening weekend of deer season.

tcu is not my 1st choice, but i do have a soft spot in the heart for them...they were the only school to offer me a schollie out of HS (partial for music). i didn't want to major in music & didn't want to go to tcu, but was/am grateful for the offer. so i say:

welcome cock-a-roaches! we don't care about what you carry off & eat, just be careful about what you step in & mess up.

ESPN just announced TCU to the Big 12 during the Cal/Oregon game. It didn't exactly draw much attention for discussion.

This is a terrific addition and a more than adequate "substitute" for the Ags. Congrats to TCU, a legitimate football program which hopefully will remain on the rise. Baseball too. And welcome back to a conference that will have more in-state conference rivalries than any other except maybe the Pac 12 which also has 4 teams from the same state. Most Texas kids will always want to play close to home where their friends and family can see them play, and the Big 12 will continue to be the first choice for the vast majority. Now TCU will have a recruiting edge over A&M that they have never enjoyed, so it should only serve to strengthen the Frogs over the long run. Well played, Big 12.
Go Froggies.

While I'm certainly not opposed to TCU in the manner that XOver has stated, it's simply the best choice from a limited pool.

I sincerely predict TCU will just become another Baylor. Pounded mercilessly by the powers year after year but it will take five or so years to establish that fact as TCU has a much better coach then Baylor.

TCU has had the benefit of playing nobody week after week for years and I tip my hat to them for not giving up and building a program that is first rate. I just don't see them being able to continue that trend however when they face a real conference schedule.

As to their facilities, they have committed to an even larger of an already beautiful stadium and the fans will likely increase IF THEY CAN compete.

No way is this an upgrade from aggy. The Baylor's, TCU's and SMU's of the world just don't have the same type fan base as large state funded institutions.

There is a reason Vandy, Tulsa, Tulane, Rice, etc suck. They go for high dollar entertainment at the expense of athletics.

Touchdown-Amon Carter is in the middle of a huge renovation. But, capacity is actually decreasing from 44k to 40k.

Thank you nwking. I though I had missed an announcement. When Texas plays at TCU, the stadium will be at least half burnt orange.

Viper horn, I have seen Texas play TCU in Amon Carter twice in the late 80s. We weren't very good in those days but we made more than half of those in attendance.

I like the move. I kind of partial to the old rivals and TCU will certainly be more viable than Baylor over the next 5-10 years.

All the predictions will proven or disproven come next year. Even if they have zero fans in the stadium Patterson consistently puts a good product one the field. I'll reserve my comments until next year.

I still like the idea of adding Boise St., but I guess the 33k stadium and sparse population are big negatives, although they would probably garner pretty good national viewers.

Looks like they may be headed to the Big East.
