Switching Religions, like switching toothpastes

I keep looking for a "TARTAR CONTROL" religion, but now all the religions talk about is "WHITENING & PLAQUE".

I think the study shows that, in the US, people are following up their religious inclinations less through their parent's church in particular and traditional institutions in general, but following up one way or another very much in the same overwhelming percentage. An eeking growth in non-belief is hardly significant. There is no evidence that the inclination toward religious practice is changing. That would be a big surprise, a seeming change in normal human behavior.

What is the hubub, asks this atheist?

netslave,

You have it backwards
Religions are based on morals. Morals are not based on religions.

Yes, we invented guns, missiles and all sorts of killing instruments. We made them to fight wars. The law says you can't use them to kill an innocent person. Morally, you shouldn't want to kill an innocent person. Would you want that person to kill you? Seriously, would you not know that if you didn't read the Bible?

Would you be so morally bankrupt without Christianity, really? Unable to tell right from wrong. Going on killing sprees. Stealing everything in sight. Would you not love your mother and father? These things were around long before the Bible was written. There are certainly sociopaths who don't hold to those norms, but it has nothing to do with any religion.

Have these sorts of threads ever caused anyone to seriously question their own spiritual beliefs?

Are your spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof) completely unquestionable?

If no, under what general circumstances would you consider your spiritual beliefs (...) to be questionable?

morality is based on self interest or group interest, which again reverts to self interest. Morality is a contract with others to preserve one's self interest.

I think that what Americans want from their Church is.......... stuff to do.........

I think the baptist's largely poineered the Concept, at least when I was growing up. Now maybe it was just to offset the lack of dancing.... however they put in better sprots facilities like raquetball courts and gymnasiums sooner than anyone else I recall. the MegaChurches have simply taken this "something to do" concept and relaxed the "bad parts" of religion.

ipersonally think that emphasizing sin is a negative. However talking about it as the ultimate human frailty and a life long struggle to do the right thing (which is the right thing for your family and loved ones in most cases) is something that ALL of us who hold beliefs in a higher power and code of morality stuggle with.

that's one of the things i like most about my Chuch St David's Episcopal. The diversity and urban location probably make it a bit out of the norm, but the message you get at the Church is uplifting to me. However they do the Ski trips, Chior activities, lock ins, and what not for the kids. It's not as suburban as the churches in my area and i like the diversity.

I see homeless folks nearly every Sunday (that I attend ;-) ), and it reminds me of the blessings I have even more. The wife and I both switched from our prior religious background to join this Church. We tried several but this wasthe best fit for us. Wow I guess that was about 15 years ago when we started going. Though I can't reember if we fully joined before we started contemplating a family, and the eventual Baptism.

It seems to be the imparative of all life in any form to act in such a manner as to increase its quality of life. Be it by bending branches to get more light, travelling in heards for safety, or by purchasing a larger TV... we do what improves our comfort the most. There are inherent benefits to an individual to act in accordance with, and to the benefit of, the rules of the society they live in.

If you want to say this is pre-programmed by our creator, I won't argue with you. Without this behavior, life wouldn't have progressed very far, that is for sure.
