Super Bowl - KC vs. SF

365,

The best football coach I have ever known was retired and called to tell me about this kid "outside" of Tyler. He asked me if "we" could drive over and watch him saying he could make throws that some NFL QBs couldn't make. We thought the kid was going baseball like his dad.
Sabre, I appreciate your anecdote and insight. I don’t doubt that he could make all of the throws in HS because I’ve seen his ability now. I never really saw him playing amazingly at Tech though. His record at Tech was 13-19. His best record in any season at Tech was 7-6. So it’s really unbelievable that he could go from that level of mediocrity to single handedly winning a SB.

365,

I think we call that "coaching", not to mention the talent around him. Who ever dreamed Purdy would play in NFL much less start in Super Bowl?

Worster,

I'm impressed. You know one more of that guy's songs than I do. I'd rather have seen the Aggie band.
It's completely a generational thing. My 32 year old son and his girlfriend sung each of the songs along with Usher. And even though he went through high school listening to this stuff in our house, I still only recognized the last song.

I bought some Super Bowl squares for my family at our club up here in Chicago. I spent quite a bit of time explaining to my wife and two daughters how they work before the game. In that explanation, I shared with them you never want the numbers 5 and 2 because they don't hit. My 15 year quickly pointed out after the game that I must not know what in the hell I was talking about since the final was 25-22.

I was totally shocked when SF chose to take the ball first. I am just an ordinary fan and I knew better than that. That's an example of over thinking.

A good defense could be part of the equation
I hear you but that may only explain half of it. If the fault lies with the Tech defense, then they would have still been in every game with Mahomes, and with his late game genious, they would have pulled off win after win - like he does now. My whole point with this is that there must be something different with him now versus then.

He is in a good system, just like all successful QBs who win a lot of games.

Some qb’s land in the right system that maximizes their skill set. Tom Brady wasn’t all that at Michigan and his 6th round selection was consistent with that. I thought Mahomes was good at sand aggy, but didn’t he have a number of injuries? I don’t really recall, but I thought Mahomes was one of the top 3-4 rated prospects in that draft and Reid moved the Chiefs up in the draft to get him, so he obviously saw something he liked and knew what he was doing. The chiefs also have a decent o-line, which I don’t think tceh did.

The Texans were going to draft him but the Chiefs got there first and the Texans took Watson instead. Mahomes definitely was a hot prospect, his tceh career notwithstanding.

I can't imagine Mahomes bring drafted by Houston. He reports to Rookie camp in May and enters the baseball draft in June.

123.4 million viewers. I wonder how much of this was influenced by the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce side story.

It seems to me that the NFL is becoming less about the sport and pivoting to become “good TV” for lack of a better term. I strongly suspect the whole thing is rigged anyway so the only thing left is to milk all the possible revenue streams as the intelligent sports fans catch on over time and abandon it. Philly and Oakland fans can be counted on to stick around indefinitely, probably Cleveland too.

Continued development and maturity. Plus pro level players surrounding him. It really isn't hard to conceptualize.
He wasn’t surrounded by great pro players - which is my point. He had one great option to throw to and it’s hard to imagine that defenses don’t concentrate on bracketing him or taking him away. So he’s left with nothing. Seriously, his receivers aren’t really pro level.

This has been the case since Tyreek Hill left. I would not be surprised if the Chiefs took Worthy in the first round because of his game changing speed. Worthy has had his issues with drops and locating the ball on deep throws, but his speed and ability with the ball in his hands will affect opposing defenses.

Did not watch during the season but I heard an announcer claim there were numerous drops by Chiefs receivers this year so Worthy need not worry.
Also a thought on that video Dion, isn’t the outside defenders job to turn the runner (in this case Mahomes) to the inside? If that was his responsibility then I’m not sure he was incorrect but I do see your point on not going for the tackle instead of taking out the blocker. Just trying to see another possibility.

From an nfl.com article on where Mahomes and Reid stand on all time lists of great QBs and coaches:

"Last year at this time, I put Mahomes in the top five. Now, he's No. 2, behind only TB12. Mahomes has leapfrogged Peyton Manning, John Elway and, yes, Joe Montana. Shoot, Pat's been a starting quarterback for six NFL seasons, and he already has the third-most playoff wins ever, behind only Brady and Montana. He's 15-3 in the postseason, including 9-2 in games where he trailed by at least seven points. Absurd.
He's the fifth quarterback in league history to win three-plus Super Bowls and third player with at least three Super Bowl MVPs. Add that to his two regular-season MVPs, and this 28-year-old is wildly decorated.
Mahomes piled up 210 passing yards and 59 rushing yards after halftime on Sunday, carrying Kansas City to the NFL mountaintop once again.
Never hate on No. 15. Always appreciate the sheer greatness of a majestic player/leader who has a knack for flourishing at winning time.
. . .
Reid just became the fifth head coach in league history with at least three Super Bowl wins. I've always argued that the offensive innovator had a Hall of Fame-caliber run in Philadelphia, but he just couldn't get over the hump to hammer home his Canton candidacy. Now he's an absolute lock, having won 71.3 percent of games (playoffs included) and three rings in Kansas City.
It's easy to view Reid as a fun-loving, cheeseburger-eating, mustached grandfather on the sideline, but the man is tough as nails. He is prepared, disciplined, preaches hard work and accountability and still believes in toughness in the trenches. He's as creative as they come as an offensive play-caller, routinely influencing league trends.
Bottom line: Reid is one of the four greatest coaches to grace the NFL."

Out right rigged, possibly but maybe not. Star power influenced absolutely(see nba). Then again, the Detroit aggy sure made some questionable coaching decisions. Surely a Detroit-Buffalo super bowl would have had the same ratings as the KC Swifties-SF super bowl.

I disagree. His receivers are pro level. They are not all pro. Except of course Travis Kelci who is all pro.
San Francisco is a great defensive team. They held the Chiefs to 19 points in regulation. They can make offenses look bad—especially one that plays its home games about 20 miles from my house whose QB is named Dac.

Mahomes is special.
