Biggest difference between us and UConn is the five shooting threats they have on the floor at all times
It just wasn't there in the second half. Hard for us to win when Brooke has her most lackluster game. They played great defense on her. I didn't see us setting any screens to help her get some shots. Atkins was very good. Caron-Goudreau played really well. Lashann brought us some life in the second half with her drives. Wish she had been in the game a little more. It was a good season. We will be super good next year. I sure hope Rellah and Chasity bring us more firepower, and our freshmen and sophs get more shooting confidence.

If the refs don't cheat Baylor, they will play UConn tough.......
UConn will win, but it will be a good game.
Good season but it's all about matchups and this team didn't matchup well with Stanford. Next year Texas will have more fire power coming off the bench with Patterson and Boothe. The deciding factor on the success of the team next year will be whether Jatarie White can be productive at the center position.

Texas just was not focused for 40 minutes.And that's hard for me to understand.
That stand around Offense, will not get you pass Elite Coach's. Tara a Mastermind of the Game. Hats off to Stanford. I feel Texas have the most talent and speed.But is Texas Offense and Defense use to take advantage of the Talent we have.With the speed of our guard's.Why we don't trap other team's guard's.Why no press!!!!! Why not pick up the Point guard for Stanford full court.Man to Man defense and that's it!!! That's sad for that type of Talent there.

Yep, all the perimeter players not named Brooke need to work on and improve their three point jump shooting during the off season. And I've said it since Coach Aston has been at Texas but she really needs to improve as a coach on the offensive side of the floor. Texas needs to run a much better offense and they also need to improve on their rebounding.

I too was wondering why we didn't press in the 3Q or try something different. We should have found ways to get Brooke open or put Higgs and Sutton in more often in the 2nd half. I'm concerned that our coaches sometimes don't put us in the best position to win games. As much as I don't like Mulkey, she would have X'd and O'd us to a win over Stanford. That game was winnable.

We just stand around Offensively.And hold the ball.

But what good is it going to do.If we are going to just stand around on Offense.And just play Man to Man Defense. Remember it's 2017.Not 1990's. The talent level is to good now, for Women's Basketball.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but in which games were we focused for 40 minutes this season? This has been the norm, not the exception against our toughest opponents. More often than not we no-showed for an entire quarter in just about every game; that ended up costing us a lead and/or momentum and sometimes the win. Have never seen anything like it. While many teams are inconsistent from one game to the next, this Texas team was extremely inconsistent from one quarter to the next. It was like watching two different teams in the same uniform play at completely different levels from one quarter to the next.
Tough loss to end the season. Lots of things stood out:
- A step slow all night getting to 50-50 balls off missed shots on both ends; Stanford winning the rebound battle was huge as it resulted in so many extra possessions for them
- Too many jump shots early in the first quarter. Shocked to see Joyner attempt a 3-point shot. Lashann took a few jump shots way too early in the shot clock; perhaps that is why she was pulled
- Overall, we played a very good first two quarters; Audrey-Anne and Alecia provided some much needed offensive punch with starters like Brooke and Kelsey not being able to contribute much offensively. Sadly, neither was able to score in the second half. Our defense really clamped down on them in the second quarter.
- We had a lot of difficulty scoring near the basket in the second half, especially. I realize there are benefits to having Joyner at the top of the key playing a high-low type of game with Kelsey or Audrey-Anne. But, by not putting Joyner down low more often, we couldn't get Erica McCall in foul trouble; she played 39 minutes last night. That is unheard of for a post player; she definitely took advantage of her quickness against Audrey-Anne and Kelsey, and when Joyner wasn't on the floor.
- Brianna Taylor lost Samuelson to start the 3rd quarter and she nailed the 3-pointer and was fouled; I thought the worst case was that Samuelson would nail the free throw and we'd get the ball back. But, no. She misses, we can't get the rebound, and then McPhee nails another 3-pointer for a 6-point start in less than 1 minutes. Huge turning point, IMO. And, the worst was yet to come as our infamous "no-show quarter" unveiled itself. We go from a 7 point halftime lead to a 5 point deficit in one quarter.
- To end the 3rd quarter, with 7 seconds left, we have Brianna dribbling the ball the entire length of the court just about, and we can't get a shot off. Worse play call I've seen in forever based on personnel. We could have had Brooke, Lashann, Ariel, or Alecia do that, and it would have at least made sense.
- Lots of folks (different boards) wondering why Brianna was on the court so much instead of Alecia or Lashann. Well, I have to believe it comes down to defense. Samuleson/McPhee probably get a lot more looks going against Higgs and Sutton than Taylor and Atkins. So, I understand the decision defensively. But, it hurts on the offensive end. That's been the give and take all year with Brianna.
- Brooke struggling offensively was a big surprise. Just when Ariel gets untracked offensively, Brooke and Kelsey are not themselves offensively. Credit to Brooke for dishing out 7 assists; one of her highest numbers of the season. As a team, we had 19 assists compared to Stanford's 17 assists. So, I thought we shared the ball well and ran some really good plays, especially in the first half.
- We did a great job limiting our turnovers. Only had 9 compared to Stanford's 14, and 2 or 3 of ours happened late in the game. So, that's not the reason we lost.
- We took 15 free throws. Stanford took 30 free throws. We have lost this category just about every game. Kelsey missing her only 2 attempts was not a good sign early; she is a very good free throw shooter and rarely missed both. Brooke and Audrey-Anne didn't make it to the free throw line.
- I didn't expect us to win the 3-point battle against Stanford. Alecia nailing two in the first half was a huge bonus; I have stated all season that she has a beautiful shot and just needs confidence. Brooke only attempting one 3-pointer (and missing) was a testament to Stanford's defense; they just didn't give her any space all night long.
Game was winnable. We were pretty much in it the entire second half sans the last 3 or so minutes. Stanford making their free throws down the stretched bumped up the final scoring margin.
Glad the team fought hard all night; but, you expect that from every team in the Sweet 16. We just failed to execute (offensively and defensively) too many times to win the game.

What concerns me the most:
1) A team that starts two seniors and two juniors (all of whom have been regular starters either part-time or full-time for multiple seasons) that is obviously totally and completely clueless when teams back off and dare them to shoot.
2) When we do find a play that the other team has shown they can't stop (Joyner posted up on the low block), we don't keep going to that well until we force the opposing team to make defensive adjustments (collapsing) to stop it. Then just MAYBE some of our preferred perimeter shooters could get some decent looks.. especially considering Joyner is a pretty good passer.
3) We've got talent on the roster and on the coaching staff. I just wonder if maybe KA is holding the reigns too tight. I see the same look and demeanor of frustration on Jamie Carey that I saw on Travis in previous seasons, and I see players who are hesitant and second-guessing themselves when they're WIDE OPEN within 10 and 12 feet of the basket.

Don't forget a more timely use of time-outs to stem the momentum of an opponent who is either cutting into a Texas lead or has pulled even and is beginning to run away with the game...
When Stanford took the lead in the 3rd quarter, it seemed like KA was not quick enough to stem the momentum...the timeout should have been sooner.

We could have won if Kelsey could have consistently hit that 10-foot jumper. I knew we were in trouble when her 1st 3 shots grazed the front of the rim. Also, she is not a strong rebounder. Too many Stanford offensive rebounds were ones she lost.

Next year I am praying for a upgrade to Coaching.
You got some much talent on the roster.
Plus the addition of 2 great player's coming in.
You got to step up Aston with your Coaching.
And be willing to listen to your Asst.Coach's.
You can see the frustration all over their face's, when they make a suggest to her.

There also needs to be improvement from the returning players. The team next year will be very experienced but their perimeter jump shooting has to improve. Patterson is a very good perimeter jump shooter so she will help. Rellah Boothe will bring more scoring to the team also but Jatarie White will be the key player that determines how good this team will be. Can she stay healthy and if she does can she be productive at the center position.

The program has returned to it's rightful position, with 3 straight Sweet 16's. Disappointed with the loss of course, but as I think back to that ***** slapping we laid out in Waco the first week of February and how loud it got when our lead crested at 20 (and how quiet it got when their 25-5 run wasn't enough), I gotta tell ya, it is a season I will remember.
With Lang leaving, it's very logical to think that how Jaterie White plays at center is the key for us next year. That may be true, if we run the same offense. Obviously whatever you run, a good center really helps; but its time for a change anyway. We have to develop a new offensive scheme that scores more points whether Jaterie White has a mediocre year or a great one. Even if White does very well, we still need more movement, more screens for shooters, and more three point production. That's the real key. In modern basketball the teams that go furthest are the ones with the most weapons---four or five scorers on the floor at the same time, and at least three can hit the three. Some of that can happen with personnel improvement. Obviously Joyner has to develop her outside shot. If she doesn't, her career will be good but will fall short of her great potential and fail to take Texas to the next step. Teams are just backing off her. Sutton showed improvement right at the end of the year, but let's admit it, she had no shot most of the season. If we want to win the big ones, she's got to be a scorer, or someone else has to be. Actually, Patterson might be the real key to the year, if she can do it as a freshman. We just have to have more scoring outside and more three point potential, regardless of the center play.
Yes, the offensive scheme needs to Improve but I don't think Coach Aston is going to change anything offensively. This team was flawed, they were a jump shooting team that couldn't shoot the ball well from the perimeter. The reason they were a jump shooting team was because Joyner and especially Kelsey Lang weren't consistent back to the basket low post players.
When the team was struggling offensively and missing their jump shots because Brooke was the only player who could consistently shoot the ball well from the perimeter they didn't have a player that could post up and give them easier/closer shots at the rim. Or get fouled and go to the free throw line to prevent the big scoring droughts that the team always had.
The team obviously needs better perimeter and three point jump shooting to have better floor spacing and to score more points. If Jatarie White can be productive and give the team a consistent back to the basket low post player the team will be more balanced and they won't have so many scoring droughts.
