Spurs Trade for Kurt Thomas

I would think that the Spurs will see how Thomas does with TD and likely will try to sign him to a 2 year deal for less money if they do well.

I think it is a great trade.

35, you really have no idea what you're talking about. You're just hoping for the end of the Spurs Dynasty.

And btw, it's a 2009 pick, not 2008.

Let's look at the last 7 Drafts. These are picks 26 thru the end of the 1st Round.

2007
Aaron Brooks
Arron Afflalo
Tiago Splitter (Spurs)
Alando Tucker
Petteri Koponen

2006
Jordan Farmar
Sergio Rodriguez
Maurice Ager
Mardy Collins
Joel Freeland

2005
Jason Maxiell
Linas Kleiza
Ian Mahinmi (Spurs)
Wayne Simien
David Lee

2004
Kevin Martin
Sasha Vujacic
Beno Udrih (Spurs)
David Harrison

2003
Ndudi Ebi
Kendrick Perkins
Leandro Barbosa
Josh Howard

2002
John Salmons (Spurs)
Chris Jefferies
Dan Dickau

2001
Samuel Dalembert
Jamaal Tinsley
Tony Parker (Spurs)

Parker, Barbosa and Howard are the only really good players. There are a few role players in there as well. That's 3/29 or 10% chance of having a draftee make a huge impact.

Trading a first round pick 2 years from now that has a 10% chance of turning into a great player is not mortgaging the future.

The trade looks pretty simple to me: they upgraded at PF and got an expiring contract which will help them sign a FA which is more valuable than the late 1st-rounder. Helps them marginally this year, but is more of a longer term move.

Hook'em!!!

You're outlook is too bleak to be a fan.

Tony is young. Manu is in his prime. Tim still has plenty left. I'd say at least 3 years. What is the point trying to "rebuild" now? Why not win now?

I don't see what's so difficult for you to understand about this. Trading away an end of the 1st round pick 2 years from now is not mortgaging the future. They have 2 guys that will likely be brought in next year that will be rookies. They'll have whoever they pick in this year's draft. And they have others overseas already.

Pop has hit on 3 picks. The rest is built through free agency. Pop loves veterans. Everyone knows that. You can trust a veteran a lot easier than pinning your hopes on some 20 year old that is all potential and no substance.

In 2010, the Spurs will have a TON of cap space. They will likely still have Tim, Tony and Manu. They'll also likely have Mahinmi and Splitter. Everything else will be filled via free agency, just the way Pop and Buford like it.

I do agree we need to get a big time big man in the very near future. But you don't get those with the 28th pick.

35, I suggest you go back and reread this thread. It's obvious you just aren't quite getting it when it comes to Spurs strategy. Retool for the future? Uh, Spurs won a championships last year, and could very well do it again.

Don't worry, in about 5 years or so you may not have to worry about the Spurs being in contention to win yet ANOTHER championship.

I'm not agreeing with 35 at all because this trade was a no-brainer for the Spurs, but Al's list is actually kind of impressive to me. There are a lot of good players that have fallen to the end of the first round in the last few years. In addition to Parker, Howard, and Barbosa, and ignoring this year's rookies who are way too young to judge, legitimate NBA players include: Jordan Farmar, Sergio Rodriguez, Jason Maxiell, Linas Kleiza, David Lee, Kevin Martin (who is a stud and should be included on the list of impact players), Sacha Vujavic, Beno Udrih (I never thought I'd include his name on this list), Kendrick Perkins, John Salmons, Sam Dalembert, and Jamaal Tinsley. It's actually a stunning list.

That looks like about 15 rotation players out of 24 picks, including 4 bona fide difference makers. Your chances of getting an impact player are still pretty slim, but you can find some value there.

Good trade by the Spurs. Thomas was expected to be bought out pretty soon I believe, if he didn't get traded. Spurs got him and thus he won't be able to hurt them. He's one guy in the league that can at least guard Duncan decently. Now they have another guy to throw at Pau/Bynum, Shaq/Amare, Chandler/West.

Good move by Presti as well. As was said on ESPN, he has managed to turn a trade exception into 3 future 1st rounders. Suns 1st rounder in 2010 may be higher than thought before because they will be much older. Spurs next year might be higher if they don't retool with some younger guys. They will have 6 first rounders the next 3 years.
