Sporting News - Texas overrated

I think the "winning-est programs of all time" argument loses some validity due to the "overrated" scale only going back to 1989. There's no way of knowing who was or wasn't overrated before that, so it's only fair to compare results for that time period. Again, I think the point is valid that the winningest teams of all time get more preseason hype, but there's no way to show that. The "expectations" for the 100+ year period are largely unknown. There does not appear to be as high of a correlation between the "wins since 1989" and "overrated-ness since 1989" as you are suggesting there should be, so not all teams that produce results are overrated.I had a hard time finding a way to present this easily, so here goes. The columns are:Wins since '89 (rank)........Team......Overrated score (overrated rank)188 (1)........Florida State........-62 (5)183 (2t)........Florida........-43.5 (11)
183 (2t)........Nebraska........-62.5 (4)

181 (4)........Tennessee........-37 (13)

180 (5)........Ohio State........-3 (22)

179 (6)........Miami-Florida........-55 (7)

176 (7)........Michigan........-77.5 (1)

167 (8)........Texas........-71 (2)

162 (9)........Virginia Tech........+21 (71)
<-- Most underrated, by far
160 (10)........Penn State........-27 (16)

Some others of interest...

159 (11)........OU........-49.5 (8)

158 (12t)........USC........-59 (6)

156 (15t)........Texas A&M........-41 (12)

153 (17)........Notre Dame........-69 (3)
<-- Very overrated
142 (25)........Clemson........-45 (9)
<-- Very overrated
128 (39)........UCLA........-44.5 (10)
<-- LOL

For example, Florida State has 188 wins since '89, best in CFB. They are also the 5th most overrated team. They are consistently ranked high in the preseason, but they have put together better results than anyone. Stassen's stats may say they're overrated, but the results speak for themselves. Same with Florida and tOSU.

Another team is USC, with 158 wins since '89, good enough for 12th in CFB. However, they are the 6th most overrated team. Their expectations are the 6th highest, yet they produce the 12th best results. O-VER-RATE-D (clap, clap, clap...)

Notre Dame, Clemson, and UCLA are much worse.

OTOH, Virginia Tech...wow.

Hayes is an *** and has an axe to grind against Texas. Go back and read his tantrum after Texas got the automatic bid to the 2005 Rose Bowl instead of Cal, of which he is an alum, I believe. He's a twit and a baby and generally a lousy, shallow writer.

Keeping things to the upcoming season, who exactly is overrating us? I've seen several projections that all have OU, KU, and Mizzou all ranked ahead of us, and Texas is not in anybody's top ten that I know of. I think anyone who actually follows the program knows that this is a bit of a transitional year, and expecting a top 5 finish or conference title is probably a bit much. If lazy media members vote us in the preseason top 10 based on name and reputation, that's their fault.

He's probably right on calling Tech overrated, though. Why people keep expecting big things out of their defense is beyond me at this point.

oh, and Ampoliros and others have already touched on this... but the phenomenon called "regression to the mean" is relevant here. This "overrated" analysis is nothing more than a statistical artifact of that phenomenon and is really worthless, at least in terms of the Stassen methodology.

^I didn't say that, and I don't remember ever thinking that.

Where my loyalties lie, or where you believe they lie, have nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Changing the subject and personal attacks are classic red herring responses to an inability to discredit a point of view, and often are actually a subconscious admission of truth. Or I suppose it could be illiteracy or some other learning disability, so I will stop there.

Why has this thread lasted several days and pages if being overrated is of no importance?

I remember that 1997 team, but I don't know if they were as overrated as the 2005 Vols. Most polls had the Vols at #3 in the preseason, and I saw some with the Vols at #2. Obviously, many thought they were a legitimate title contender.

Well, they finished 5-6. With a miraculous 2nd half, they somehow squeaked out of Baton Rouge with a W, but that was overshadowed by losses to SOS (ouch) and Vandy (mega ouch), and borderline wins against lowly UAB and Memphis. They lost to ND 41-21, but the game was tied in the 4th quarter before the wheels came off with a defensive TD and a special teams TD for the Irish, so I don't know if I'd consider it a blowout.

There were a lot of close wins and losses that year. Tennessee's fans argue, "we were just 3 plays away from being 8-3," which I agree with, but no one will admit they were also 3 plays away from being 2-9, which is also the truth.

No doubt, both very forgettable and overrated seasons for both programs.

OK, so let me rephrase...

The opinion of a guy living in his parents' basement and playing video games until 3AM is 'evidence'???

We had lots of talent last year as well. We always do, but we were lucky to end up as good as we did. I hope that Texas bounces back this year, but when I looked at the schedule...."a little bit of pee came out."

I don't know with Vol saying all the things he has done at The University of Texas it sound like he coming of as arrogant and self centered almost like if he is bragging.

Jeez, I thought the vol was here to help defend the Alamo if the need ever arises. After reading that resume, I'm hoping the need never arises.
