Sporting News - Texas overrated

AstroVol:

You and I have the same problem. I live in Knoxville.

Trust me. There's no way to realistically join a conversation in which you side against the "home" team. I've just learned to keep my mouth shut -- which, by the way, is not what I am telling you to do.

There's no way for me to take up arms against the Vols without hearing, "well, if it wasn't for TN there wouldn't be a Texas." I have my own historical reply to this but I digress.

Next Fall, you should stop by our tailgate. It's in the parking lot of the Vet School.

every year there is an overrated conference and an underrated conference...whats the big deal...

Wow,

Overrated smack, pointing out that Texas (according to Stassen's methodology, which I'm sure has been peer reviewed, lol) is the 2nd most overrated program of all time.

Hmmmm, let's see, Stassen's list of most overrated programs goes like this (ten most overrated programs, all-time):

10. UCLA
9. Clemson
8. OU
7. Miami
6. USC
5. FSU
4. Nebraska
3. Notre Dame
2. Texas
1. Michigan

I'm failing to see the negative implication of this rating system.

I mean, afterall, except for Alabama, this top ten list includes the top programs in college football history. It includes the winningest program of all time (Michigan), the program with the best winning percentage of all time (Notre Dame), and without researching it, programs that additionally combine for about 25 national titles (Miami, OU, Nebraska, USC, and Texas).

Shame on Texas. Just shame on us.

It's called reputation.

Hook 'em.

I don't understand the Astrovol backlash. Seems to me he's always been a good poster on this board and unlike some sooner/aggie posters seems mostly unbiased. Did I miss some post in the past where he bashed on UT hard?

Sorry folks. If we start out anywhere north of #12 we are overrated. I think many of you forget how poorly UT played last season in most games. Yeah, we won 10 games but had to survive Arkansas State, Central Florida, & Nebraska. We lost to pathetic KSU, at home no less, and the Aggies.

I fear that we have losses coming against OU, Tech, KU, Mizzou for sure and we have toss ups in CU and A&M. I fully expect 4 or more losses this season.

We have talent, but a lot of it is unproven. For right now, if Texas wins its' ten games this coming season, the Horns will have over achieved.

The most overrated statistical analysis is actually an analysis of who is most often highly rated. If you're highly rated frequently, then you can only under-perform, almost never over-perform. If you start out the season rated 5th and finish 1st, you were underrated, but you can only gain 4 spots. If you were rated top 5 and fall out of the top 25, you lose much more proportionally. Those ratings will ALWAYS favor teams that are never in the top 25 and occasionally have a good season that exceeds everyone's expectations.

I agree with Red Five....our 10 game wins per year streak is in serious jeopardy but I think our 2009 team will be very good.

Shocking...the team with the most wins, the second most wins, and the third most wins all time in college football are the most overrated. Who would guess that people use the past to predict the future?

guys...this is not rocket science. look at the "most overrated teams." they are the winningest teams in college football history in reverse order (through the top 4 at least). all this means is that we have a great reputation and oftentimes are overrated year to year based on our rich history. in my opinion, this is EXACTLY what you would expect.

michigan #1 all time wins, #1 most overrated
Texas #3 all time wins #2 most overrated
Notre Dame #2 all time wins, #3 most overrated
Nebraska #4 all time wins, #4 most overrated....

get it? in order to be "overrated" you have to be very very good......historically speaking. we are, therefore we are understandably overrated many years and over time.

You've got to be rated, especially when you might not deserve it, to be overrated.

There are more than a few schools that would like to be in that position.

I disagree with Leapfrog. The Auburn poster is much easier to take than the confusing Tennessee poster who likes the Houston baseball team.
