So is the TCU game Shaka's swan song??

While I'm not a fan of Shaka's contract, getting to the Elite Eight every year is something that teams just don't do.
How about just one ncaa tournament win. Not one lousy win in Shaka’s tenure.
That will change this year with the talent on this team—this team is loaded. If he doesn’t get them to the Sweet 16...

LHAB,

I disagree since Tony Bennett just won another ACC title and has a National Championship on his resume, yet he makes very little more than Smart. Of course, the guy we fired makes almost a million more than Smart, so an argument could be made that Powers reduced cost without sacrificing performance.

we have all seen this type of game before with him---playing a team that is 5-10 in conference, we are a 7.5-8 pt favorite on the road---yet, these are games that we LOSE (I know from experience, I was at school during the Kaiser Bob years, '83-87)---if the 'Horns lose this game, irregardless of the tourney outcome, is this Shaka's death sentence?? just want your opinion--I, for one, think that is enuff!!
No. Shaka is back next year even if we lose all remaining games. He has done a decent job this year. I give him a C+/B-.
Next year, he needs to win something meaningful to keep his job. Just MHO.

With all this talent he's done nothing again. He can't coach. He's never won a tourney game at Texas right? 6 years? We fired Rick Barnes for this BS? come on... I think a Texas Ex will be coming home for next season...

Shaka has underperformed, no doubt. But the team was competitive this year and finished with a winning record in conference. Given the improvement in team performance and the fact that we just shelled out many $millions to get rid of and replace Herman, Shaka will survive through next year. Whether he survives beyond next year will depend on his performance going forward.

Done nothing?

We're currently the #3 seeded team in the toughest conference in the nation. We're a top 13 team--maybe a top 10 team. Not too shabby. Watch for a deep run in the NCAA tournament. We're already the defending NIT tournament champions--that goes to show Shaka's ability to get the team prepared on the fly in a tourney situation.

And "all this talent"??? That talent didn't just somehow fall into Shaka's lap. No--Shaka painstakingly recruited and developed that talent.

This is a top 5 in the country team. Shaka has always done a really nice job of getting elite talent here. He just hasn't figured out how to make it work and that's why so many are frustrated. Being 3rd in conference and 13th in the country is doing less with more.

March Madness is always tough because there are so many upsets, but this team should handily make the elite 8.

Getting a #3 seed in this covid season basically means nothing if Texas loses to a #14 in the first round. The asterisk for this tourney is who can keep their team poised and covid free for a few weeks. Shaka makes it to the Sweet Sixteen, I feel he's reached his first solid mark at Texas. The NIT was "nice", but the last time Texas won the NIT, it actually meant something.

Oh, please.

Greg Brown (with all of his one-and-done flaws) and a bunch of contributing 4-stars doesn't make us a top-5 talent team. You could take the talent on one of Duke's classes (and look how rough they are this season) and it would still outrank the top 8 players on our roster, regardless of class. Or UNC. Or Nova. Or UK.

And, like I mentioned on the other thread, teams don't just "handily" make the Elite Eight. It takes a lot of dominos. It's something we've accomplished 4 times in the modern era, much like going to the national championship for football. Making it an expectation is something that the Dukes, UNCs, and Kansases of the world don't even accomplish at that high a tic.

I agree that Shaka has completely underperformed and if this were football, none of us would stand for the record he has put up. But I will say this is his best season so far in my mind and maybe I had too low of expectations starting the season but I never viewed this team as a top 5 or top 10 team at the start of the season. From the list I would say I am glad we aren't Aggie with Buzz or Utah with Larry K. Hell Dixon makes more than Shaka at TCU and I would say Shaka has coached better than Dixon.

2 names below Shaka on the list that intrigue me are Underwood at Illini- He has had a helluva season and won tournament games at SFAustin when he was there. And Nate Oats at Bama- he has put together a strong program there.

You believe what you want, but the experience combined with the depth of talent on this team is top 5 material.

It's one ******* game! The University of Texas has paid top dollar for three years of these kind of games, and has been lucky to get one or two of these a year.

Under coached, no discipline, poor game planning, poor to no in game management. At $250,000 a year, some could be tolerated. For $5 million a year, the Horns should be Great Eight every year, but help refresh my memory, how many times has Billie Powers choice gotten us to the Great Eight? Final Four? Sweet Sixteen?
I don’t think any team has ever made it to the Great Eight. Where is that?

According to this, Shaka is the 19th highest paid coach in NCAA but the 6th highest paid in B12. So I guess a 3rd place finish in conference is outperforming his pay...

Do you think we are more talented than Kansas or Baylor?
What a foolish question, those 2 teams do not even have enough talent to compete at the high school level in Texas. Hell, I am 53 years old, 5'10" and 230 lbs and I would dominate all those losers on the Texas Tech team. Texas Tech does not even have a single player who could play at the 8th grade level. In a nutshell, this is what you are arguing with.

Then why are they 2-0 against the Horns? Coaching?

Which player in the UT starting five do you think would be benched in favor of a ttu player. Which ttu player would start over any one of our starters?
Really, I can't find one.

McDung, Texas doesn't have anyone that can flop the way he can.
