Sirius/XM bringing back OLD SCHOOL HIP HOP AND RAP

YAY. Backspin and The Strobe are going to be coming back to satellite radio waves effective January 16, 2009.

I found this paragraph from the article to be funny:

"Bringing back The Strobe and Backspin, and adding The Beat Morning Show, is
part of our commitment to respond to our subscribers' overwhelming passion
for our service," said Scott Greenstein, President and Chief Content Officer,
SIRIUS XM Radio. "We are fortunate to have an enthusiastic audience that
embraces satellite radio with unprecedented fervor. We will continue to
listen to them as we strive to create the best audio entertainment experience
available."

HAHA, overwhelming passion. Don't mess with the old school, holmes.

I got this info from xmfan website.

There is some good stuff including people complaining about XM Chill's demise and a theory about it. It turns out that Sirius had rock and other songs as their version of Chill, not relaxing ambient stuff like XM. The fusion is sucking and both sides are not happy about it. But they are working to get this sorted out too.

So if any of you also hit them with emails of your concern and support for Backspin/The Rhyme format, congrats. We did it.

To reiterate... not having Backspin (or an equivalent) is inexcusable. I can't imagine anyone at Sirius/XM not having sense enough to know that.

Well, luckily the "overwhelming passion" (and emails and letters in the thousands) knocked that sense into them. They greatly underestimated the lobby power and passion some had for this genre. They are doing some revamping as predicted and are open to even more. They know they have some fine tuning to go.

I personally think a problem is so many single artist channels at this time. You can combine your Jam station with that Grateful Dead one. You can play a good amount of Dead stuff with maybe a night that features full concerts and interviews/tidbits. Then maybe one weekend a month feature Phish, String Cheese Incident or another band. But there is not a need for a Grateful Dead channel AND the Jam one.

Same goes for Zeppelin, AC/DC, Metallica, Bruce Springsteen and any other artists who have their own channel. It's just too much and takes up channels you could better serve and make people happy within those genres.

Again, fine tuning to come but for now, we get old school hip hop back. I see they are bringing a couple of shows from The Rhyme. I am excited about this.

Now if they will only fix the abortion of not having Fred and pretending that 1st Wave covers that genre. Much of the stuff on 1st Wave should be played on the 80s on 8 channel. Hopefully this is their next area of focus. The Fred lobby has to be huge.

Is Fred now an online station or something? I have heard it changed a day or so before the transition in November. I wonder how much the Sirius people had with that.

Or by Fred do you mean 1st Wave? You will hear crap like Rockwell and things like that now. No more Fall, Buzzcocks, Joy Division and bands like that on that channel. It is more Top 40 now. Fred's dead baby, Fred's dead.

Now to resurrect him and bring him back the way he was, the way he should be.

I meant 1st Wave - I still call it Fred. It really is bad. Come on - the Cars?

too much overlap with 80's on 8.

You're absolutely right - I haven't heard Husker Du, Buzzcocks, The Dead Milkmen, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy etc in weeks.

On an XMfan thread there was a guy who listed the play list for 1st Wave and compared it to one from Fred. Big difference.

On the 1st Wave channel there were zero Smiths songs. The only New Order ones were the more bland and commercial tracks such as Bizarre Love Triangle and Blue Monday. It was a pathetic list for 1st Wave and yes, very much what belongs on 80s on 8.

If you want I will give you the link to that thread, it's an interesting thread by people that are very obsessed with Fred. I am glad they are willing to do the legwork and spend the time so that I can simply read about it.

I hope their tenacity is rewarded. I am going to now write some emails to see if I can help bring back Fred. I think that the Sirius listeners would be very happy with Fred if they liked the real scene, the real music beyond what was on the radio.

Here is a thread about the repetition of 1st Wave compared to that of Fred. Big difference. It is, by this time, playing The Smiths and other underground bands. I don't consider the Smiths underground in this time but back then, yes. It was not mainstream.

A very interesting synopsis from people that heard the last few hours of Fred before the changeover to recently. If you get bored with the bitching you can go to the last couple of pages where they mention added songs to the Wave play list, etc.

There seems to be some progress but not much. I laugh at the guy who tries to break it down to West Coast listeners v. East Coast listeners in the 80s (listeners of music, not SatRad).

He says that 1st Wave is like KROQ back in the day and Fred was East Coast. You dickwad. I listened to KROQ a bunch and no, you are flat out wrong. I hear no punk, no underground on Wave. Dolt. He must've been a Val Dude, y'know. Like, totally.

The channel or genre specific tends to be in this forum:

I heard something on Lithiium, I think about them merging with Ethel. They made specific mention of Ethel coming to that station. I assume it means they will be adding more Ethel type songs to that play list which is a HUGE improvement. I predict that like a plague of good it will overtake the current status and become more and more like her in time.

I can already tell some transformation on 1st Wave in the direction of Fred. Hopefully they will do the same with XMU.

Baby steps. I can't wait for Backspin/The Rhyme to come back in about two weeks.

backspin is officially back...

A dumb question, perhaps, but did you look for it in both spots? Sirius has its channel and XM another. It should be there and they all got the channel at the same time. Weird you are not. It may be a technical problem?

Nevermind, I got it. It used to be on 42 but now its on 39. What threw me off is that the channel name is still showing as Pop2k.

Man i love this channel, what an ******* whoever thought it was a good idea to get rid of it.

I have sat radio channels through DirecTV, so I thought I'd give it a shot. First song, right off the bat, was from 808 State on Chill! Very cool!

Was that song, Pacific? If so, terrific song!! Not really chill nor what XM would have played but solid if so.

Yes it is. It took some time but that version of Cubic is awesome. Lift is a fantastic song. I am shocked it has not been used in a soundtrack to some movie by now. Maybe it has but not to my recollection.
