Shriners Children's College Baseball Showdown

Don't worry about the offense. They'll come around.

Last year we scored, on average, >7 runs per game. Re returned most of that and added Winfield, Rodriguez, and Chamberlain.

We were working the counts well on the starter and got his pitch count up high. We struck out a lot though.

Mercer didn't exactly have the best first outing. He's good though. Not worried about him or Riojas.

I do think there is something about Globe Life as the first weekend, Texas seems to be just cursed when Arlington is the opening weekend. Of course, all curses must eventually come to an end and Texas has two more chances this weekend. The Horns have had success at Globe Life later in the year winning a series against OU and making a Big XII tournament final so they can win there.

I was at the game, not sure if it was televised or not, I wasn't expecting the offense to sputter out of the gate like this. The longer the game went on, the more I had this bad feeling they were going to allow this team back in it.

My day started at 2am that day so it was a loooong day and I left when Louisville tied it up (B9).

Spencer and Riojas look good. A. Dup, goodness, of all the pitchers for this to happen to :brickwall:.

I didn't agree with putting A. Rod in the 2 hole or leaving Borba out of the line up. Schuessler may be too short at 1B which means Galvan would be too. We have some challenging decisions to make but Schloss may not have a lot to chose from so this may not change much, if any. There were some throws that were high and or a hair wide that pulled Kimble off the bag, runner safe. This is a problem. I don't believe any of those lead to runs, just an issue I saw that could lead to runs. I also didn't see Farmer being in RF in place of Belyeu, i understand playing with the lineups early to get guys in but it can't be at the cost of the game. i.e. Farmer, A. Rod's batting position, Borba out of the lineup etc.

Grades (thru B9)*:

Pitching - (C+) - Difficult to grade, hard to knock Spencer and Riojas in with Mercer and A. Dup along with the failures on offense. Pitching was actually good enough to win but ultimately, if you come in to close out a game, you need to close out the game and yet it failed last night.

Offense - (F) - 16 strike outs. six (6) SO's by two batters in the heart of your order (Flores and A. Rod). This, even in the 1st game, is unacceptable. Happy for Gas and A. Rod and I know we talk about HR's on here but they are unimportant, just a fun stat to talk about around the bar. Scoring runs matters.

Defense - (B) - If I remember correctly, we turned at least two DP's, one started by A. Rod and one by Kimber. Flores was error prone toward the end of the season at SS last year and he gets his first error in the 1st game, hopefully this isn't a common theme again, the score card is showing he made 2 ER's, i'm guessing one of those came in the 10th after I left. Farmer was asleep early in the game and wasn't prepared for the runner to advance (1st to 2nd) on a FO. Maybe i'm used to Belyeu?? But almost certain he doesn't advance on Belyeu. The runner never crossed home but a noted brain fart in my book. I know i'm probably being picky but this is Texas and we are playing college baseball. Defense still played well enough to win though and why the B grade.

*I did not watch the top and bottom 10, so if there were more discrepancies on offense and defense, obviously I didn't include them.

Just looked at the play by play in the 10th......a passed ball by Galvan. Haven't seen the video of it yet. and A. Dup hit a batter in the 10th?:puke::cursing2:

Yep. We had a couple of double plays, but Flores was jinxed last night. Not his night.

Ole Miss Game.

We’re in a HUGE 4th inning.

Gaspo. 2RBI double
Galvan 2RBI single

And it ain’t over yet.

Ole Miss pitcher gets the hook
Exit stage left
Hit the showers ya filthy bum
Enter Hooks to the mound for the Confederates.

And Hooks struck out Farmer. Farmer lost his chance for a bumper crop of runs there. (Eucker stirs a bit in his grave..)
