Sam’s Injury

If Charlie wins that 2016 game he’s probably still our HC. Just sayin’.

This is sadly true. Mack Brown was fired after 8-5 (4-5), 9-4 (5-4) and 8-5 (7-2). Herman has gone 7-6 (5-4) and 8-3 (6-2). However, for Fenves and Co. 6-7 (5-4), 5-7 (4-5) and getting to 6-6 (4-5) with a win over Kansas would have been “good enough” and “progress”.

I was happy we lost to Kansas both during the game and after. Only way we were going to get rid of Charlie that year and I couldn't take another year of his deer in the headlights look.

I am never happy Texas loses and was not happy at the time. That said, while I never liked nor wanted a Texas loss, “Kansas beat Texas” has never stung to me as it was really the only way we would ever move on from the Charlie Strong era.

Although losing 0-24 to 3-9 Iowa State in 2015 which fired its coach was actually worse than the Kansas loss and remains the worst loss in Texas history in my estimation. I mean, we never crossed the Iowa State 45 yard line until their was 1 minute 6 seconds left in the 4th and they put their backups in. In retrospect, that Iowa State loss should have been the final straw and he should have been removed after 2015.

Anyway, I am pro preserving Buechele’s redshirt (he has earned it) and playing the freshmen if Sam is fine and we have a big lead.

You must have missed Route 66. That and the loss to Iowa in the Freedom bowl were the 2 worst games I've seen us play. But the Iowa St. game was a doozy. At least this year we've been in every game. Start to finish. No cheapie TD at the end just to draw it close. It's a bigger difference than just the record.

Certainly more critical he plays with G Johnson out but boy do I hope he’s not putting himself in an unwise risk situation.

We need our QB to be “great” this weekend.

This is not good news and makes me suspicious about his throwing Sat. vs. KU. The first 8-10 throws looked good and after that IMO he became more inconsistent - he missed some open receivers.

Will his shoulder be 100% Sat. vs. ou - I suspect no. Will it be better than it was vs. KU?

His shoulder seriously needs some rest but no rest this week with the game on Sat. So I suspect his shoulder will be about the same as last Sat.

The whole injury has been handled wrong. The injury was not healed when he came back. What happens in the offseason will be interesting. If surgery is involved Herman and Staff will be responsible for playing an injured player which will be the topic of recruiting across recruit kitchen tables.

The main issue is that Tom Herman seems to think that taking an injury-prone QB and using him as a battering ram on 15-20 designed QB runs per game is a wise idea.

Sam does not avoid contact -- he's a punishing runner who tries to run people over. Good luck convincing him to run otherwise.

Herman needs to limit his running and let the RBs get pounded all game long instead of Sam.

I think TH was trying tp protect him to some extent. I saw Sam run less vs. KU than past games. Certainly less aggressively....

i must have watched a diff game. 15 to 20 qb runs? I will go with Coach on this one.
Sam had 8 carries for a net gain of 1 yard (23 yards gained; 22 yards lost).
He got banged around quite a bit and was ineffective in the last quarter. Played well in the third quarter. But was not himself; especially obvious in the 2nd and 4th quarter. But it doesn't take much of a drop off to make the difference in hitting a receiver in full stride. Timing being off a half second is the difference in a catch or not; zip on the ball is the difference in successful timed throws or not.

I really hope Sam plays at full speed. We need him to be at his best!

And then again, perhaps TH is being coy about Ehlinger. If I was coaching this team, I would be.
I don't think the ou coaches give much credence to what TH says about Sam. They will scrutinize the game film though, and will especially look at how Sam played: threw, ran, which plays were called for him, etc in that game Vis a Vis others.

they will be able to identify any changes, even very subtle ones. The week's rest will help. Sam was able to finish the game. He didn't make the injury worse.

Hopefully, he'll be totally well.

How many of those 22 yards lost were due to sacks, not designed QB runs? Misleading info.
I think its obvious that the -22 is mostly sacks. who on this board can't read a stat sheet from the box score and figure this out? Who on this board didn't watch the game and see the runs and sacks?
I don't think its misleading at all. Its the way stats have been compiled and published since I've been watching football--60 years.
Every QB who has the ball in his hand and is tackled will have gains and losses. Some gains come on planned runs. Some come on scrambles.
Some losses come on planned runs. Usually the big losses come on sacks. Occasionally a QB tries to avoid the sack and gets a bigger loss.
The QB gets hit every time he's tackled--whether its a planned run or a sack. He gets hit on most pass plays after he releases the ball.

Misleading?? So how in the world is that stat misleading?

I would be more inclined to believe that if we had not all seen the way Sam tried to measure his words when interviewed in the parking lot as he was walking to the bus post-game...

It's misleading IF used to assert that it relates to the number of called QB runs by the coaches.
The stat clarifies exactly how many times he held the ball until tackled. That is exactly what it does.

The contention on the posts were: TH called 10 -15 runs for Sam. The stat clarifies the number of times Sam held the ball until tackled, including sacks, if any. And clarifies that TH called no where near 10 to 15 runs for Sam.
