Sam’s Injury

In presser, TH was very adamant that Sam will start if he’s cleared...will know for certain on Thursday. Said his shoulder is not as bad as the Monday after original the injury in BU game. He was very limited in his comments, but seemed very confident Sam would be ready. We’ll see.....

Suspect shoulder is as TH described - just angry / swollen / sore. Some rest Sunday & Monday with ice for the first couple of days and lite throwing late week - I bet Sam starts Sat. and will be fine.... we will see.

Some are saying we should rest Sam and play Shane. TH was adamant in his presser that he will play his best players that are capable of playing.
You play to win the game ahead of you, not the game after that. In this case if we don't beat KU, our next game will the Texas Bowl. Can anyone imagine the shriek if TH played Shane and it didn't go well and we lost? I know some will say start Shane and if necessary switch to Sam. How can it be assured that we can take the momentum back once it belongs to KU? Many of KU's players were there two years ago and know that we are not invincible. We MUST go out and take control of this game and not relinquish it. That means Sam plays if he can go. If not, Shane starts and Rising is the backup.

If Sam is well, and can play at full strength and full skill level, then I agree^^.

If Sam's arm strength is only 90%, or 80% then its a different matter. Being slightly off or favoring the arm due to pain or numbness is a recipe for disaster.

I trust TH to make the right call. If Sam is good to go then he plays. No question.

If Sam is 90% + I think you have to start him. He is the leader of the team and it feeds off his swagger and toughness. If the same o-line and d-line in the ISU game show up for this game all should be well. Focus must be on only winning this game. Worry about the dirt burglars or mountain aggy after putting Kansas away.

Agree, but my main concern is if he is 80-90% and can pass effectively, does he get tentative on running the ball. But, as you say, TH will will know much more than we can speculate about!

If he is well, play him. But if you get a good lead and the defense is playing well, get Shane in. We need Sam full strength to exact revenge on WV.

I heard if he aggravates his shoulder one more time, it may have to be amputated
That's NOT what I heard, my friend who knows someone who knows the team doctor's spouse said that he would just wouldn't be able to grip a ball if he injures it again. That's hardly amputation. See how fake news gets started? :brickwall:

Is Sam starting to get Chuck Norris status? Like, "Sam had his throwing shoulder amputated and still threw for 400 yards and rushed for 200 yards left handed"...

Channeling Chuck Norris...

With his injured arm, from 100 yards away, Sam threw a grenade into the tent and killed 50 enemy. Then the grenade went off!!

If the people "clearing" are the ones who cleared a QB to come back into the final minutes of the OU game a year ago when it sure seemed like THE KID DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHERE HE WAS, then I say sit Sam. When I saw that arm dangling, all I could think of was Colt in 2009 BCS Title Game. Get it rested for the CCG and Sugar Bowl.

“The MRI revealed that he re-injured the ligament that was healing. He also has a contusion on the shoulder that’s pretty deep. The good news is that it does not show any instability. They will do all the PT anti-inflammatory stuff and see if he can throw on Thursday without pain.”

If the kid isn't 100% according to doctors, not Sam or Herman, sit him for rest and healing. I am confident that Shane and Rising can carry the load if there is one to be carried. We need to work on our run blocking, line up all 3-4 RBs to take turns and pound the ball inside until KU defense folds.

I understand that Herman wants to redshirt Shane this year but why haven't we seen one of the frosh QBs take a few snaps before? My understanding is that they could play in up to four games without losing their redshirt. Plenty of time for them to get experience this year in case they have to step in next season if Sam goes down. And Shane transfers at the end of this season. Otherwise, why redshirt Shane?

I am not sure that Herman likes to play his backup QB but maybe the situation this year is unique in that he has an experienced QB as backup but wants to redshirt him so he plays Sam without putting in one of the frosh.

“The MRI revealed that he re-injured the ligament that was healing.
So the key word to me here is "healing." Note it makes clear that the ligament that was originally injured had not "healed" fully. In medical terminology, the suffix, "ing" or "ed" is telling. Although the previous injury was on the way to a full recovery, it still had not fully healed. So a deep contusion will not fully heal in six days, nor will the re injured ligament. I guess the key question is, Will these partially healed injuries impair Sam's play; and/or will he be at risk of more serious injury that could end his season?

agreed. i'd much prefer a tight game against Kansas if Sam isn't 100%.

If everyone has to be 100% to play, we might as well forfeit the game.

"everyone" is not our most demanding, problematic position on the team.

OL has had its moments, and we have had to plug and play. Plug and play does not work so well at QB. We are fortunate to have four QBs, three of whom are healthy and capable of leading the team to victory over Kansas. If Sam is "the man", then I want him healthy if we have a game the first week of December and again for a bowl, not recovering from surgery.

This^^^. I think that the coaches (and the receivers and D backs who practice with Sam every day) wil be able to tell if the zip, timing or accuracy of Sam's throws is off.

And if Shane has to start, I think we win the game. The key, as it was in the ISU game, is the defense. If our D plays like it did against ISU, then we win going away. Our D has the ability to dominate ku. I hope Orlando has them well prepared.
