SAM and DICKER the only members of this team that sing THE EYES???

IMO, the relational damage done by this particular group of fools is something that cannot be overcome. Only their purge from the UT environment and replacement with players that embrace and respect all things Longhorn will reconcile the situation.

If the Mackovick years can be corrected (in pretty much 2 seasons) then the Strong and Herman years can be corrected.

Do we really think Urban Meyer would have handled this differently? He doesn't have ties here or an understanding of the meaning to those of us who stand proud with Horns held high when that song plays.

Meyer let Percy Harvin refuse to run stairs as conditioning at UF- Harvin is reported to have cussed out coaches and demand they change the conditioning program and UM obliged. There were multiple player arrests over drug use and theft that UM helped sweep under the rug vs running this "demand respect" notion that everyone seems to think is so easy to get. We all know about Aaron Hernandez and Cam Newton was arrested for a stolen laptop. There is a pretty strong pattern of him coddling players if you ask me.
it would remain about football and not a song that is regarded as racist in an ignorant non-valid way.

Yes they started this for a reason. The only people complaining are the fans. So yes they are the entire reason this is happening. It's not like they are going to flick everyone off when the song is playing they just simply will not sing the song and the fans need to respect that and move on about their day. This entire issue is ridiculous and if everyone worried about winning as much as they do this song than maybe we would have different results but everyone's priorities are way out of place and look where we are now.
tell me how the eyes of texas is racist, and, please be specific. You must first find it in the lyrics, not anything else. Annnnddd begin!

You seem like you want to forget the snowflakes said in June they would not attend any donor related events. But donors etc still bought tickets and came to games
Maybe a reality check is in order

Id rather have a team that goes 8-5 every year but plays with heart and respects the university and its traditions than players who want to pick and choose what they find offensive and pat themselves on the back for being woke over nonsense.

Many fans cannot understand the outrage over the song, whose meaning has never been racist to them and easily argued its meaning has changed over time if it once was. Its the selective outrage that is causing the outrage.

Its meaning has never changed. Race was an issue for the entire university for most of its history. The song only has to do with the spirit of the students and alumni (and fans) regardless of what their race is. The song transcends everything else. Why don't people get this?

To every athlete and coach for the last 110+ years the song has not been racist yet suddenly it is.
Very suddenly, indeed.

From just 3 years ago*, here's the LHB playing The Eyes at a marching band festival in Round Rock (not a football game, so it's not like they're being compelled to play it for the sake of tradition or school spirit or whatever). Judging from the volume, no one seems to be slacking or holding back from playing it.

*which seems like forever ago, now

There are racist things swirling about the song whether directly or indirectly.
And it has been voiced in prior years by athletes but did not get this kind of attention.
Personally, I think it was a mistake to make such a big deal about the song.
It has eclipsed other things of greater importance that people could be taking notice of.
While the songs past can be picked apart and found to be associated with what could possibly be construed as racist ideals, nobody singing it at the football games is thinking anything other than school pride and supporting the team.
The players should understand this and drop it.
There are bigger fish to fry.
The Damning History Behind UT’s ‘The Eyes of Texas’ Song

Robert E Lee after the war was blunt about the reality that the south had lost the war and that the country must heal in its reunification.

The phrase "the eyes of the south are upon you" wasn't some coded racial dog whistle. The fact that Prather stole it and modified it with Texas doesn't make the song racist.

As the article points out, minstrel shows persisted till the 1960s! Those were racist, not the damn song.

Which is why I stated "directly or INDIRECTLY".
If minstrel shows were racist and the song was used in them then it was indirectly associated with racist behavior.
Again, I personally believe it has been blown out of proportion and the students should drop it.
It has only undermined anything else they have to say.

I agree with your sentiment. To the "indirect" aspect, if that is girding the players so much, then literally everything about the University is indirectly tied to racism, so they actually come off as morons for even being here in the first place.

Moon,

Did you ever go to menstrels when they were on in the 60s?

The Eyes would have been the theme song of the MLK parade compared to the racism displayed in the shows. As I have posted before, "Nobody Likes A Smart ***', which I'm not embarrassed to say I saw many times into the mid/late 70s and laughed my *** off every time.

The Dallas TexasExes brought Ricky up for a meet and greet his sophomore year. Remember Ricky was painfully shy back then. But he was personable and accessible to all who attended. It was a really cool event.
I do not know how many were there but it was crowded.
The money raised that night by the Exes, like all Exes events all over the state every year, went to scholarships to Texas. Many of those schollies awarded go to minority students. You'd think the black athletes on scholarships would like that scholarships went to other blacks who don't run a 4.4
But the Snowflakes made sure events won't happen since in June they boycotted all donor events. But We fans are the problem??

No attendance at events, fewer scholarships to minorities and non-minorities? Good work by Snowflakes! Good work by B(l)M. Wonder how many non-event donations dry up. Flacks and BM won’t care. They will be on to something else. Maybe someday Flakes will realize that bad acts, anywhere, can cause capital to move.
