If Rush Limbaugh wielded true power over the Republican party I can assure you that McCain would not have been nominated in 2008 and Romney would certainly not be the front-runner today.

Rush is an entertainer like many on the left. The best thing that could happen for his show is a Democrat President. It gives him a daily "stack of stuff" to comment on. He had a tough time during the Bush years although Nancy Pelosi is a daily gift.
 
Limbaugh's popularity has more to due with the general revulsion that a large swath of our country has with the left wing of the democratic party. Because he constantly bashes that left wing, people listen in.

He has certainly not influenced any real political trend despite your assertion to the contrary. I would be amazed if you could substantiate your claim that "people kiss his ring" with any detail or real life example.
 
I would also note that the only ones claiming Rush Limbaugh has an influence on GOP politics are democrats like Rahm Emmanuel and left-leaning media groups (like Media Matters).

Don't let these guys wind you and am push you forward to spout dubious talking points. Free your mind, Satchel. More Spock, less Dr. McCoy for you.
 
I watched with humor and disgust as the procession of GOP politicians make their acts of contrition to Rush when they have spoken independently and incurred his wrath.

The only minds needing freeing would be those of elected GOP sycophants.
