Sorry to be the messenger but per twitter, RSJ has de committed from Texas.
Not sure but he wants to go to a school where he can play both football and basketball.

If true, Barnes needs to be in Sealy tonight and say welcome aboard.

Its understandable for these kids who are top athletes and have played multiple sports for years. They hate giving something up that they are very good at doing, especially now that he is realizing his basketball days are numbered and he does not want them to end. I don't blame him one bit. He needs to follow his heart. Its his life.

But, the truth is, once he gets in college and comes under the demand of school (which is a big jump from the school work of High School), along with the demands of being on a college athletic team at a big time school, he will soon see the reality of 2 sports in college along with the education is not anything close to what its like in High School.

He feels he can do it now. Hey, he is 18 and on top of the world. At some point, he will understand what I am talking about and will be thrilled to focus on one sport and have some leisure time available. When his football buddies are going to the lake to hang out, he will be going to basketball practice. Between school, football and basketball, he won't ever have another weekend to just hang. He will have football Bowl game practice in the morning and basketball practice 2 hours later. But, in the meantime, I say follow your heart Ricky.

God Speed Kiddo!

Even 'Tellus figured it out. And he's got a bag of used condoms for a brain.

I think there's a chance he comes back. Swoopes is basically his best friend. We picked up so many receivers these last three classes, RSJ probably feels that we'd be fine if he went elsewhere. I don't really blame him.

Fire Tunnel stated in a very positive way the reality of this type of situation, some input that lots of kids should be receiving - well put!

According to comments from Swoopes and Raulerson he wants to reconsider his opportunities. This story may not be finished yet.

Anybody got more inside info? Other 2013 pledges are saying that he is still saying Texas is his #1 but he wanted to see what other schools have to offer? Is he upset that Texas may be recruiting other WR's?

I agree that it is better to happen now than later though so that Texas has time to go after other WR's.

Baylor now seems to be SMU circa mid 70's. There was a reason really good athletes chose SMU in those days.

What Ivan said.

How many times do you see one school get REALLY GOOD, REALLY FAST in several sports. And do it within the rules. NCAA was nice enough to let BU win their NC before smacking them on the wrist. This may NOT be the same thing 'cause the kid wants to play 2 sports... Just sayin...

I'm a bit supprised at the timing. just after the camp over the weekend. I would think that would be were the coaches get reasurance from these kids. Makes me wonder if there was something that happened. either way best of luck to him no matter were he ends up he will be a big time player

Hope we can get RSJ back into the fold. He's an important part of this recruiting class. I agree that the timing seems a little strange since he was just at UT for the camp. Hopefully, he'll come around and know UT is where he belongs.

I don't think it's a surprise at all that it happened right after the camp. That's when you get questions answered:

RSJ: "Oh, by the way, can I play both football and basketball?"

Mack: "No"

RSJ: "Ok, I need to think about it"

Mack: "You need to either commit to us or decommit until you know what you want so I can know whether or not I have your scholarship available."

RSJ: "Ok, I'll decommit."

bystander, i'm sure thats possible, but i'd be surprised if mack took that approach with RSJ, given his talent and the lack of available receivers out there. rhodes is leaning towards baylor, and samples is likely not going to end up at UT...plus neither one of them have the skillset that RSJ has.

i know mack has played hardball before, but we've seen that approach soften up a bit with folks like hassan ridgeway and daeshon hall taking visits and still having a horn offer on the table.

i think this legitimately is a situation where a kid caught the horn staff off guard by wanting to keep his options open.

When Kirk Bohls (yeah, I know, some of you guys love him) says on his live chat (paraphrasing) I would like to say but I can't, it makes me think there is more involved than his wanting to play basketball.

i'm really not trying to play a card nor am i trying to be argumentative.

i think the dirty recruiting rumors are a double edged sword. essentially you're saying that all the finalists are participating in a bidding war.

it's the same thing as the stuff recruitocosm was putting out about peter jinkens last year...that he had a street agent when dealing with TAMU and oregon, but was clean when dealing with UT.

i just dont know if i buy that. i'm not saying programs are 100% clean or 100% dirty, it's just odd to me that kids would solicit cash from some programs but would be interested in other programs without the same level of incentive.

and in this case perhaps the simplest explanation is the right one...the kid wants to reevaluate his options, and if he does end up at UT its because he's certain that it's the right place for him.

Joe..In this case there is something fishy going on. I haven't got all the details yet but it appears to be a Cam Newton type deal(perhaps). It's just too interesting that RSJ commits/bonds/camps etc at UT and then throws out this basketball excuse(apparently Mack/Rick had approved it) as a reason for decommitting.

Well, when a recruit's HS coach is caught off guard, red flags usually go up: Linky. I'm guessing there's much more to this story than RS-J wanting to play two sports.

At some point the NCAA is going to have to either come down very hard very quickly on paying athletes, or just give up, admit that they are totally ineffective, and greenlight letting players go to the highest bidder.

I agree. And to that end his recruitment very simply could be that he committed too early and wants to evaluate all options.

So instead of him having his hand out to some programs and not others occams razor indicates that hes likely still on the up and up and is reevaluating his commitment and could still end up with the horns

It's waaaay to premature to talk about a pay-for-play scheme. Sounds like there's more to this story than RS-J just wanting to play two sports though.

Before we get too far in the hand wringing or perhaps that ship has already sailed, the think to keep in mind is these guys are still high school students. Think back to when you were their age. At that age, you change your mind 24/7. But I respect RSJ for at least doing so now so the coaches have time to work their back up plan.

I wasn't an athletic recruit but I do remember going back and forth between UT and Texas Tech at his age. Growing up in Austin, being a long drive away from my parents was an enticing thought. But my ties to Texas were too strong and I'm glad to have a UT degree.

Point is, things will settle down for him and if the ties to Texas are strong enough, RSJ will come. Otherwise, if another place is a better fit for what he's looking for, I wish nothing but the best for him.

I don't believe it's all about basketball. If the Longhorns prove they have a quarterback who can hit open receivers, he'll be back.

I'm getting the impression that this decision has nothing to do with the QB situation or playing two sports. Something (or someone) else is behind it all IMHO. Time will tell I guess.
