RIP John McCain

You guys are all missing the point. If you think there was no calculation on Trump's part you havent been paying attention. Trump drives the media cycle, and uses just about every opportunity to insert himself. And now he's relented to what he should have just done in the first place.

I didn't realize the WH had revisited the decision and re-lower the flags. Good for Trump to listen to feedback. That's growth.

"On behalf of the American Legion's two million wartime veterans, I strongly urge you to make an appropriate presidential proclamation noting Senator McCain's death and legacy of service to our nation, and that our nation's flag be half-staffed throughout his internment," Denise Rohan, national commander of the American Legion, said in a statement earlier Monday.

Veterans are a huge part of Trump's base. McCain has been a pretty big supporter of veterans over his career, starting with choosing to remain a POW rather than giving North Vietnam a "win" by releasing him early.

He issued a proclamation for the flags to be flown at half-staff as is customary. But only after inserting himself into the news story. The shame and proof being that he is being discussed in a thread that should be about John McCain.

Regardless of what I thought of him as a Senator, he was a great man who sacrificed greatly for his country. The fact that his death has become political football is despicable on all sides. RIP John McCain.

Can we all agree Trump is an *******?

And that his assholishness works very well for the country at times, yet at other times comes across as far less than pleasant?

If we can agree to that, then I fail to see why every time his assholishness is on display it warrants such an overreaction from everybody else. (and this statement is definitely not directed at you personally)

No worries, I never took it as such. And yes, I can agree with you on Trump being an ******* :) I also agree that it's "baked into" Trump and it's going to be what we get. We'll see what, if any, impact it has on his re-election chances in 2020. I believe it's going to have a detrimental effect on the down-ballot races coming up, however.

By and large I've loved what he's done policy-wise and I hope he continues down that road.

But back to the original intent of this thread, RIP, John McCain, and all of my prayers for your soul and your family.

Subunu was genuine and honest. Allison Camerota displayed everything that CNN is. I don’t call it fake news, it’s propaganda.

This flag at half-mast is much ado about nothing. Trump is following the code, the absolute minimum.

Yes, but let's not pretend the reason he's doing it is because he just had a principle all along to follow only the code there and nothing more.

But Trump's pettiness with regards to McCain's passing is really pretty and deserves some contempt, even if it's par for the course with him. And McCain getting sucked into that maelstrom and becoming petty himself upsets me as well.

McCain got sucked into the maelstrom of pettiness over McCain's death? That's impressive.

I took time to look it up and it follows the Flag Code to the letter.

By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential instructions or orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law. In the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff. The flag shall be flown at half-staff thirty days from the death of the President or a former President; ten days from the day of death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives; from the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession; and on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress.

That doesn't sound petty to me.

Not that I particularly care about any of this...

But from what I've seen (and I can find links if need be), Trump basically nixed the idea of a White House statement lauding McCain, preferring instead to tweet out his condolences. Trump steadfastly refuses to call McCain a hero - and I'm not sure which is more childish, refusing to say it or getting mad when someone WON'T say it about you. Meanwhile McCain allegedly instructed that Trump not be invited to his funeral, and Trump won't back off his "I prefer heroes that DON'T get captured."

Trump looks immature, petty, and vindictive. If it were just the flag, then that would be fine. But he's clearly following a pattern where he's intending to slight McCain. It is completely in keeping with his character and his fragile ego.

Anyone think Trump's attack on Google today was anything other than an attempt to change the subject about his handling of McCain's passing? He's like an extremely bad puppet master.

I probably should have worded that a bit better, eh? I was referring to him passively excluding Trump from attending his funeral by asking that the veep attend, that sort of thing.

But I have to admit that if Trump had impugned me the way he did McCain, I would be hard-pressed to show much civility.

A lot of people hated McCain the politician. He used is earned honor as a POW to deflect criticism that any politician receives. Many people forget he attacked Trump first, and hard. I suspect he was as big an ******* as Trump. How else would he survive the treatment he received as a POW if he weren’t?

I wish professional journalists would stop butchering the language ... I mean really ... you earn your living with the written/spoken word ... use proper English grammar and structure for crying out loud.

She's pitiful. Sadly she's not alone.

AFA John McCain ... I have nothing to add.

A history of the Trump-McCain spat.

This was McCain's "attack" first...

June 30, 2015:
"I just disagree with his comments about the, quote, Mexicans," McCain said about the campaign speech in which Trump suggested Mexican immigrants bring “drugs” and “crime” into the U.S. and that some of them are “rapists.”

To which Trump responded:
July 16, 2015:
Less than three weeks later, at a campaign rally in Arizona, Trump called out McCain for being weak as the candidate began honing a get-tough message on immigration.

“We have incompetent politicians, not only the president,” Trump told the crowd. “I mean, right here, in your own state, you have John McCain.”

In response, McCain told The New Yorker that what Trump did at his rally had “fired up the crazies.”

Then, Trump responded via Twitter: “The thousands of people that showed up for me in Phoenix were amazing Americans. @SenJohnMcCain called them ‘crazies’--must apologize!”

Of course, we all know that later Trump would go on to...
“He’s not a war hero,” Trump told a crowd at a campaign stop in Iowa. “He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”

Trump started the attacks. "I disagree with X . . ." isn't an attack. Calling someone incompetent is an attack. Even worse, Trump tried to passively keep up the attacks after McCain was gone. Not good.

It’s clear to me they had a personal fued before that event. You don’t go 0-60 in 4 seconds without previous acrimony

His family asked Sarah Palin not to attend the funeral. That seems harsh to me. She was loyal to him to the end, even after he said he should have chosen Lieberman instead of Palin for Veep.

She's a diva who went rogue on McCain to sell books. **** her.
