Ringers is Closed

I won't deny that there is some jumping to conclusions on my part but this isn't a company with 3000 employees and multi-national operations. This is a sports bar with one location and less than say 50 employees. The fact that the state comptroller's office caught this and the CPAs for Ringers didn't seems fishy.

Like I said, I will miss Ringers; they have got plenty of my business and even if it wasn't my favorite sports bar they at least alleviated the #s at the other sports bars.

I guess we'll either find out what happened (here or AAS) or we won't.

This ******* sucks

I loved Ringers

best Sports Bar in Austin for sure

the amount of flat screens and HD was top notch

fire sale on flat panel tv's?

let me know if that happens

but seriously, sucks it's closing. Agreed it's a great spot for game watching. Third Base is also a nice setup.

I remember watching Game 5 of Spurs-Pistons there. That place was nuts. I'll be sad to see it go, even though it was a tad expensive and could get ridiculously packed. All in all, it really was the best sports bar in Austin.

I don't know what that's going to be, but I talked to one of the owners the other day. I'll definitely be trying to get a gig there.

I asked one of the J. Black's bartenders about the sports bar one night, he said, "we are not worried about the competition.", I explained that was not my question.

He was the David Cross looking one.

A friend of mine told me that the tvs were going for $200 each and all were called for. Who knows if that is true. BUT do you want a tv that has been on for 8hr per day every day?

I thought it was part of J. Black's for some reason.

Regardless, I am very happy.

Watch the games and then retire to J's for more cocktails.

I liked Ringers and Austin needs more sports bars. Not a fan of Champions at all.

I am mildly curious as to what tax issue got them. Just off the top of my head I see these:

-14% you pay on beer/liquor sales. any business should be able to track what they buy and sell so this shouldn't be a big surprise

-employment taxes: withhold 6.2% for social security and 1.45% for medicare from paychecks and then match that amount and send to the Fed. No surprise here either.

-tax on corporate profit, there are plenty of ways to mess this up but that's why we have accountants

I'm sure there are others that I'm not thinking of right now but I'd like to know whether the government did something sneaky or whether it was bad business practice.

I met one of the owners awhile back and he was a really nice guy.

people who think ringers is overpriced are people who think all of the 4th street area is overpriced. they are entitled to their opinion, but they aren't people who were ever going to come by the place anyway.

JT, I have spent more than my fair share of cash at Ringers. For the area, it wasn't overpriced. For a sports bar it was. But it was a sports bar in 4th st. area so no surprise to me.

What I didn't like was the service. There were times when it was so packed that it would take our waitresses forever to get our beers. It was so bad that my friends could order a beer from the waitress, I could then walk 15 feet to the bar, get a drink (even waiting in line for the bartender), get back to the table, finish the beer.... all before the waitress brought out the beers for my friends. It would piss them off the service was that slow. We would be there for big playoff games and such so it would be super packed... but I am not going to pay money for that service. I am sure my waitress was pissed that I was doing this but I'm not going to pay for that crappy service. I remember a few years ago watching a Texas/OU basketball game there (couldn't find tix under $60 per ticket at the Erwin Center which surprised us so we drove to Ringers). Same deal. I think they charged $10 cover that day too.

On days that weren't as bad, I would use my server.

It's the bars obligation to show you a good time. If something gets in the way of that then it's fair game to do what you have to do.

Every bar and restaurant in Austin has had a night where the staff was overwhelmed. It's certainly not your fault that this happens so the staff shouldn't get upset that you're doing something to actually ease the problem. If they do tell them to **** off and staff more people.
