Ringers is Closed

Very sad to report that Ringers is closed and probably won't reopen.

In short, this SUCKS. This was hands down the best sports bar in Austin and nothing comes close.

Had many good times and watched many good games in that bar but, alas, nothing is forever............

There was a tax issue the original owners didn't take care of. The current owners didn't know about it and were blindsided by a TX Comptroller audit. The current owners decided the amount of the tax wasn't worth throwing at the place.

There is a *slight* chance it will be bought and reopened in it's current form. I'll go into details once the nail is in the coffin.

Lame news.

I was always able to walk over, get a spot at the bar, and enjoy the games in HD.

Hope they rebound.

I have said this before to my friends... the only thing that can close a business down that fast is the government.

That said, I am not going to feel sorry for Ringers for not paying their taxes. Last I checked, they didn't forget to COLLECT TAXES from us. Hell, I have been there many times and not one time have they been off on the taxes that I owed.

A friend of mine who knows the GM there told me that the time period in question was basically football season and hence their busiest times of the year. ****, I wouldn't mind a rebate from them for what I paid in taxes if they were going to pocket it.

With Ringers closed, this is going to mean forget about going to 3rd Base during March Madness. Hell I was at 3rd Base last year on Friday of the 1st round games. We got there at 2pm or so (I took vacation) and by the time the Texas game came on, it was seriously packed. In fact, they got written up for being over the Fire limit that night; we saw them come in and start counting.

Honestly I wasn't a fan of Ringers (too dark, overpriced) but they got plenty of my business b/c my friends liked it. But I liked it better with them open. This means 3rd Base and Pluckers are going to be crazy during big games.

Comptroller audits are a ***** to the bar business.

The way they do the audit for mixed beverage is EXTREMELY flawed and can easily close a place down. Don't assume that Ringers "just didn't pay their taxes" because I am betting that is not the case.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that they guy working there knows more than some of you who apparently have psychic powers.

I went to that place one time during the tournament and half the booths were off limits / reserved for people who didn't show up until most of the games were already over. Never went back.

I ran the marathon, and Ringers was supposed to be open as a pre and post place. The word we got was that they had moved these events to city hall because ringers had "structural problems". interesting to now hear what "structural" means.

It was a decent place, but for me, any bars/restaurants that charge $8.50 or 9 for a burger, then charge $2 more for french fries piss me off.
One reason why I'm kind of turned off by BJ's Brewhouse in Sunset Valley as well.
Hut's does this too, but their burgers aren't almost $10. damn, i just got a Hut's Mr Blue craving.

Fied - your source is way off.

I'll elaborate once everything has cooled off and we do know what is going to happen going forward.

As for tables being reserved and not filled...**** happens man. You take reservations from your heavy hitters and they don't show up, it sucks for the bar as well. You think we want an empty booth when the place is full?

Beer and food prices? Location, location, location. Our prices are, errr, were, right in line w/ every other place in the area.

Trying to find a parking space downtown for weekday NCAA games sounds like a disaster to me.

Fowler's out on 620 near 183 is a great place to watch the games. They have a draft beer glass that is at least 48 to 60 ounces and is only $5. The food is lame but I am not there to eat anyway. Plus they have plenty of free parking.

I know I'm in the minority on this one, but I sure won't miss it. Ringers was too sterile (no character) for me and always felt overpriced except for their HH prices.

I sure hope it reopens. Timing couldn't have been worse with SXSW people from all over the country wanting to watch their teams during March Madness.

Champ's doesn't have HD. I went there for a Thursday night college football game during the World Series. I liked the place, mostly business travelers. But no HD??? We were gone by halftime and went to a buddy of mine's place who lives in the Brown Building and has HD. The plan was to go there originally but he hadn't got home from work yet.

No HD isn't an issue for me. I only went to Champions once when a friend of mine was staying at the hotel... decent enough place for a hotel bar.

Well damn Fied, where was she when the MIT grad who founded one of the most successful software companies ever needed her? Amazing how someone so successful just didn't even pay attention to something so obvious, huh? How on Earth did that guy ever get his bank account up to 9 figures w/o someone as smart as your wife around to help him out?

This thing must be fun!
