Replacement for Augie....Who would you offer ???

My choice is Tom Arrington, skipper at SanJac North. He has taken them to the Juco World Series 10 out of the 15 years he has been there. He has the Texas ties so many think we need, and an obvious winner. ( You think Augie can rally a team....) Tonight the gators fell behind 7-0 early...they rallied to cut it to 7-6 going into the 9th...In the ninth they had back to back HRs and a triple to win the game 8-7.

For those who turn their nose at the fact Arrington is a former Aggy....Darrell Royal was a Sooner, Mack coached at OU.

We need a proven winner and a guy with Texas ties......This guy fits the bill, and we could get him far cheaper than some of the pipe dream guys from Virginia, Florida, etc, etc.....

As soon as the JCWS is over Texas needs to offer the guy the job.

We have more money than god and baseball is an important sport at this school. Why would any coach out there be a "pipe dream"?

There are no pipe dream coaches for Texas, in '97 Augie was a "pipe dream" who had won 3 NC's at Fullerton and no reason to ever move anywhere but Texas went out and got him because this is best job in college baseball, period. Identify the best coach and go sign him.

This. We have the money. Do not mess it up Perrin and Fenves.
The reason why we should all be holding our collective breaths. They got a good one in Smart. Can lightening strike twice?

As I told my daughter this morning - smart schools have a replacement lined-up before they fire the HC. However Texas doesn't seem to work that way; the benefit of being TEXAS.

I have a cousin in Houston who is one of the 'go-to' private baseball coaches/trainers in the area for little league and HS players. Alex Silver from Bellaire HS was one of his students. He played at San Jac, UT & HBU.

Says Arrington is a top "baseball man", but very unpolished & rough around the edges. So, his thought is whether Perrin, et al will want a classic UT PR type coach! I had never heard of him til this post. But, sounds like he should be on our radar. He also mentioned the Sam Houston coach.

I have no opinion or expertise on this, but you would think we can get the pick-of-the-litter!!

No chance we get a JC coach as head coach. I agree the San Jac program has been just as dominant as Texas has in the past 20 years, but Texas pays too much to go get a JC coach. The San Jac head guy probably makes 150k at best, while this job will pay upwards to $1 mil. I could see the San Jac guy as a solid assistant hire if the new staff decides not to retain the current staff.

I anticipate Texas to go over the mega elite coaches that are still in their prime (O'Sullivan at Florida, Corbin at Vandy, McDonnell at Louisville, Schlossnagle at TCU, Tedlock at Tech, etc). I could also see Texas exploring options like Rocket or Swindell as pitching coaches to make a splash.

Generally agree! I also recall chatter about Lance Berkman in the last few years. No clue if that is legit?!?

Although, Wayne Graham (San Jac legend!) worked out pretty well for a Rice!

Oh...it won't be a Juco coach...esp. an aggy.

geez you guys, i don't know of an established coach at a Div 1 school that i would say "hey, that coach is one heck of a coach and we have to have him!" having said that, why wouldn't a coach from sanjac cut it? he might just turn out to be the next Rod Dedeaux.....and it's championships, not just wins in my book.

So you think a JC coach isn't good enough for Texas...Darn good thing ya'll weren't doing the hiring when we looked at Cliff Gustafson back in the day.

Charlie might turn out to be just what the doctor ordered....but.....Texas football sure was able to get the pick of the litter...Saban, Meyer, etc were chomping at the bit to come here....Now you all think Texas baseball can just open the door and guys will come running......sheeeesh.

I think Texas should hire the best coach for them. It can be an established D1 coach, assistant, or a juco coach. There are great coaches at every level.

Marc Rardin (14th Season, 663-186) Iowa Western Juco
World Series Appearances: 17 (1975, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1989, 1991, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016)
World Series Titles: 3 (2010, 2012, 2014)
Dude is better than Tom Arrington. Taken them to 10 series out of 14 years and WON 3.

Why has Dan Heefner at Dallas Baptist cooled off? He was a very hot property a year or two ago and the team is still performing, they are #2 seed at Lubbock Regional this year.

'54, "...Saban, Meyer, etc were chomping at the bit to come here..." You omitted the sarcasm font...or you are among the most delusional people on the planet.

Texas should not have to settle for the likes of Charlie Strong in ANY sport. I just hope Belmont learned their lesson and we don't have to settle in baseball. If Texas is still the Jones', as DeLoss put it, we should be able to get anybody we want.

We will have to wait, though. The next coach at Texas is preparing to host a regional this weekend and hopefully a Super Regional next week.

Our door will be guarded.....and WE will choose who may enter.

I expect little difficulty hiring one of the very best coaches out there if the powers that be have the wits to target the right ones.

There are a few that already have a great setup and are beyond content, which is no slight to our position.

The Texas baseball head coaching job has a higher stature than football (despite it's high profile), and definitely dwarfs basketball.

Texas baseball is in a whole other stratosphere in terms of accomplishments and national regard.

Since the creation of the college world series in 1947, we've played in what amounts to the national championship game(s) 12 times, winning 6 titles.

We own the record in CWS wins (85) by 11, and appearances (35) by 11 seasons.

Only USC has any argument as a more accomplished program in the history of college baseball with 6 more national titles.

Getting this hire right will not be hindered by the outstanding lure of our position, but could fall prey to incompetent selections and negotiating.

At the end of the day I still firmly believe this job is too storied and desired for even our decision makers to screw up the hire.

I'm sure Augie will be the trusted voice on where to look and who'll be interested. The man has formed a lot of solid relationships with his peers the last 48 years.

The Texas job is certainly a top tier job (one of the top 5 in all of college baseball) because of tradition, salary, access to recruiting, longhorn network, facilities. I think we will get the guy are we targeting (Florida HC). The only thing I worry about is coaches using Texas to get a bump in their pay at their current school. McConnell at Louisville just got an extension for $1 mil, so these athletic programs are very scared and very aware we are coming. I could see Corbin, o'sullivan, TCU guy, and other top candidates doing the same thing, which would leave us with the tier 2 candidates like DBu coach, Louisiana tech, etc.

I personally think we will land the #1 guy we want (o'sullivan) and this will be much easier than the Charlie Strong deal. Baseball is in a much better position than football was at Mack's departure.

Football was in worse shape? I don't think so......

Schlossnagle would be a good hire, but TCU seems to always be able to scrounge up enough funds to hold onto people they want to hold onto.
