Religious belief instinctive

God, it turns out, is an ineffective idea for enforcing moral behavior (ask people imprisoned for murder and the vast majority will tell you they believe in god).

Just look at the Old Testament and count up the bodies that God killed. Not Satan, but God. God killed far more people than Satan. And even though one of the 613 commandments is "thou shalt not kill", kill is defined very narrowly, so some killing is ok.

Science is abandoning rational discourse.

Not at all.

Of course you may be defining "science" in an arbitrary way.

It does seem that more of the science community is not as focussed on rational inquiry, but whether that segment represents an increase in number or merely in the more vocal scientists getting press, I don't know.

I don't have any idea about the press. What I know is that the posters on this board who claim to speak in the name of science have little or no interest in rational discourse.

I wouldn't exactly refer to that group as the "science community". Not saying they (or some) aren't good scientists, but they do not consitute the "scientific community".

And while most of your discourse may be described as "rational", it is better defined as "metaphysical", thus seemingly beyond the more empirically-driven approach taken by science. You seem to be more interested in getting back to "first principles", or attempting to expose some deeply hidden (or not deeply hidden) flaw in one's internal logic or cognitive consistency. As such, your emphasis is more on logic instead of science.
