Recruiting -- where we stand as of 10/31

Does anyone really know how tall Griner is? I find it amusing that HoopGurlz has her listed at three different heights: 6-6 in this article, 6-5 in their evaluation, and 6-7 on the Top 100 list. I've seen other reports listing her at 6-8.

And they have Bone listed at two differents heights: 6-3 and 6-5. Which is it?

This is nerve wracking. We could wind up rich or below poverty level. I'm look foward to seeing Flores. Kelsey thinks she's very good, based on her remarks during her online talk.

Well, I think we all were aware that it could take a couple of seasons for GG to prove what she can do here. It may be that we need to have an even better year this year to snag some of these top recruits from the 2010 class.

I sort of see Bone as a South Carolina or A&M lean and Reed to be a Rutgers lean. Rutgers has loaded up on guards again and Reed could be the missing piece to that group.

You might want to check Rutgers Roster. Plenty of post and centers there.Plus we got Cokiie Reed.

There’s been talk on other boards about the post position at Texas being crowded with the verbal of Cokie and Bone and Tinkle still considering Texas while AG will be a veteran.

Well, this year we have two posts (AG & Aubry) and two forwards (Lindsey and Kristen) and two G/Fs (Earnie and Kat). Three of those are seniors. Kat is really more effective as a wing player than in the post though she may need to play there some this year. That leaves just two post players returning. Should we get Bone and Tinkle to sign with Reed, that would mean five post players to rotate among two spots. Kristen would be a senior. Reed and Tinkle also could play at the three.

I doubt if all three will come to Texas (but one can dream) but another post player would certainly get a lot of playing time—two more plus Cokie would still find playing time available as earned. Playing for our post players 2009 will not be a problem.

I think we sign between four and five players for 2009—at least another post/PF and a wing.

Good analysis, Babhorn. I remember Duke having a strong post game when Gail was there, with more than one major force inside -- Mistie Bass, Alison Bales, Chante Black, it seems like maybe another one or two. I vaguely remember thinking her offense used the posts really well with a lot of high-low stuff. And, as Cokie points out, Gail seems happy with posts developing their outside game. Didn't Alison Bales take a lot of outside shots (maybe even three's)? I haven't been that focused on WBB in the last few years, but that's what my memory brings up. Could be wrong.

Every player brings different skills to the table, even if on paper, they play the same position. We are losing 2 post players after this season, so it's only natural for the staff to pursue at least 2 as replacements.

South Carolina had both Cokie and Kelsey scheduled to visit Columbia on the same weekend back in September, but Kelsey had to re-schedule due to Hurricane Ike. I'm sure Dawn Staley is just like Gail in that she knows both can co-exist on the floor at the same time, otherwise, I doubt she would have wanted them to visit together on the same weekend. Cokie and Nikki Green were both on the floor together during the summer with DFW Elite, and Kelsey was on the floor with Ashley Gayle and Monique Oliver with West Coast Elite two summers ago.

Again, different players, different skills sets, same objective -- national championship.

As for Tinkle, I think her versatility makes her more like Heather Schreiber; I'm sure she's the type of player who has such a great all-around game that she makes everyone around her better. Plus, as a coach's daughter, I'm sure she has many intangibles that just can't be taught.

Here's to hoping for a tremendous frontcourt for years to come!

With Kelsey Bone, Tayler Hill and possibly Joslyn Tinkle looking at make late decisions, could we be looking at a couple of signings in the spring? Those three are the most visible recruiting targets (the ones that we know about) that have the Horns on the mind. Outside Tinkle, both Bone and Hill have indicated that they may wait pass the early signing period to make a decision. With Tinkle's late visit to Stanford, she is also a candidate to decide after the early signing period.

Whichever way they decide, this is one of the most exciting signing periods ever.

I may have missed others, but the only time I saw anything about Tayler Hill waiting until Spring to sign was in yesterday's Hoogurlz.com article. There were no direct quotes from her, so I'm not sure that's accurate. I believe her visit to Duke this weekend is her last, as I know she already visited Marquette, and think she's alread visited Rutgers.

So, not sure why that article suggested she wouldn't have time.

Bone has said she may wait.

Tinkle has already taken 4 visits, with only a visit to Stanford remaining. Again, I haven't read anything to suggest she won't sign in the Fall, but it's certainly possible.

Tinkle has said she knows where she will play college basketball but I guess she just wanted to take all her visits.

I wish we could get all our prospective athltes of all sports to visit us during a football weekend. That has been a big help to us during the past.
