Recruiting -- where we stand as of 10/31

Someone on our Rivals.com board asked me for an update on women's hoops recruiting; while this isn't news to most of you, here's what I posted:

- We still have one commitment for the 2009 class. Lauren Flores, a 5'7 PG from Galena Park Northshore committed back in early February. She is also a fabulous 3-point shooter, and plays her summer ball with DFW Elite, which is stacked with talent.

- Kelsey Bone, 6'5 C/F from Sugarland Dulles is ranked by most services as the #1 or #2 recruit in the country, and played her 2007 summer ball with current Longhorn freshman, Ashley Gayle, on the West Coast Elite team; she even accompanied Gayle last Fall when Gayle made her official visit to Texas. There were rumors swirling all sumer long as to who her final five schools would be; she narrowed it down to South Carolina, Texas, Texas A&M, Illinois, and Tennessee. The two UT's had always been listed, but the other 3 schools came as a shock to many as they were rarely mentioned; UConn fans took the news particularly hard, as they thought they led for her signature. She had planned to visit South Carolina in early September, but Hurricane Ike negated that plan. Surprisingly, Tennessee filled up its allotted 15 'ships with a recent commitment, and pulled their offer to Bone. So, she is now down to 4 schools. She visited Texas A&M on September 19 (during the Miami football game) and South Carolina this past weekend. She'll visit Illinois either this week or next, and then Texas last. Think it will be during the Missouri football weekend.

- Cokie Reed, 6'5 C/F from Waco Midway is ranked by most services as a #5-10 recruit nationally, and plays her summer ball with DFW Elite. She was long thought to be a Texas lean when she narrowed her list of 5 finalists to Texas, LSU, Rutgers, South Carolina, and Oklahoma, and said it was mainly in that order, with Texas leading. Unfortunately, rumor has it that she is very interested in South Carolina, and loves new coach, Dawn Staley. She visited South Carolina two or three weekends ago, and visited LSU last weekend. She has since dropped OU and added Central Arkansas, where her sister is a junior. She's scheduled to visit Texas in October. I hope she makes the visit, as many on other boards say (rumors) that she is close to committing to the Gamecocks.

- Nikki Green, 6'5 C/F is ranked by most services as a top 20 recruit in the country, and plays her summer ball with DFW Elite. She was long thought to be a Texas lean when she narrowed her list of 4 finalists to Texas, LSU, Rutgers, and Penn State, and said it was mainly in that order, with Texas leading. She had planned to visit Texas in early September, but Hurricane Ike negated that plan. She then visited Penn State the weekend of September 19, and unfortunately, she committed to the Nittany Lions late last week. She has decided not to reschedule her visit to Texas.

- Joslyn Tinkle, 6'3 F from Missoula, MT is ranked by most services as a #5-10 recruit nationally. She was one of only 4 high school kids selected this summer to play on a USA junior national team (along with Kelsey Bone). Her Dad is a coach for the University of Montana Men's basketball team; not sure, but he may even be the head coach. She visited OU during Labor Day weekend, and has visits scheduled to Georgia on October 10, and to Texas on October 31. Stanford, Montana, Duke, Cal-Berkeley, and Notre Dame are trying to get one of her two remaining official visits.

- Kristi Bellock, 6'1 F from New Orleans, LA is ranked by most services as a #25-50 recruit nationally. She's visited Miami already, and has scheduled official visits to Texas and Texas A&M. Oklahoma, Duke, and Kansas State are trying to get one of her two remaining official visits.

- Tayler Hill, 5'10 SG from Minneapolis, MN is ranked by most services as a top 15 recruit nationally. She had long thought to be a Minnesota lean, but dropped the Golden Gophers recently. She has scheduled official visits to Rutgers, Texas, Duke, and Marquette. She should be visiting this month, I imagine.

- Krista Gross, 6'0 W from Concord, NC is ranked by most services as a top 25 recruit nationally. She had planned to visit Texas in early September, but Hurricane Ike negated that plan. She will visit Florida this weekend, followed by visits to Stanford (10/10), UConn (10/17), and North Carolina (10/24). She is unsure if she will reschedule her visit to Texas, which has to mean we're longshots, even if she does.

- Monique Oliver, 6'3 C from Long Beach, CA is ranked by most services as a #5-10 recruit nationally. She was long thought to be a USC lean when she narrowed her list of 5 finalists to Southern Cal, Texas, LSU, Maryland, and Duke. She visited USC officially during the Ohio State football weekend, and committed the following Sunday. She canceled her remaining visits.

- Alex Bentley, 5'7 PG/SG from Indianapolis, IN is ranked by most services as a #50 recruit nationally. She was long thought to be a Purdue, but dropped the Boilermakers recently. She listed a final 3 of Penn State, North Carolina, and Texas. She visited Penn State the weekend of September 19 along with Nikki Green, and unfortunately, she also committed to the Nittany Lions late last week. She has decided not to visit Texas.

- Tierra Rogers, 5'11 W from San Francisco, CA is ranked by most services as a top 25 recruit nationally, and plays her summer ball with DFW Elite. She visited Cal-Berkeley in early September, and committed to the Golden Bears. She will not make any other official visits.

That's about it. We have 6 'ships open for 2009, but probably won't give them all out. Would be great if we get several of Bone, Reed, Tinkle, Bellock, and Hill to join Flores, but it's tough to know who we lead for at the moment.

Great summary, Moooooo. It's good to see all the info together. We're in the mix for a lot of good kids but I sure wish we would start getting some committments. Pretty much all of the players listing Texas are planning to take all their visits so it may be late Oct or early Nov before we find out who is coming here.

Kelsey Bone will be visiting Illinois on 10/10, and Texas on 10/17.

Cokie Reed will be visiting Texas on 10/24.

Good news about Tinkle. Interesting to hear that A&M got 6-3 P Diamond Ashmore, the 16th ranked post by Hoopgurlz. Wonder how many ships they have to give out for the 09 class?

Let's hope that increases our chances of landing one of the other top post players.

Does anyone else find it shocking that of the top 20 players in this class that UCONN does not have one commit and not one of the top 20 players even considering them?

Many of our basketball team members as well as Coach G have been to our volleyball games. It will be great to have a really huge crowd at Gregory Gym on Friday night for the Missouri match. I'm sure Coach G will have the recruits there to show them what great fan support we have for women's athletics here at Texas.

Soccer team is hosting OU on Friday @ 7PM, but I'd guess they'll take the recruits to the volleyball game AFTER they've watched the FIRST basketball practice of the season!

What an exciting weekend for them to visit, as they will also have the opportunity to feel the electricity of a big football game when we play Mizzou.

I'm just guessing, but if basketball practice starts today at 5PM, I don't see how the team, coaches, or recruits will be able to make it to the Volleyball game tonight. I did hear that they will be tailgating outside of Cooley before the football game tomorrow though!

This blog on the SA Express had a few interesting quotes which the article I posted earlier did not . . .

The Link

FYI - Tayler Hill's boyfriend is Bryce McNeal, a top football prospect from MN who recently decommitted from Michigan. Based on an article I had read a while back, they had discussed going to the same college, but knew they might not be able to as Hill wasn't considering Michigan. Granted, things may have changed (such as them not being together any more; regardless, they both seem to be elite athletes).

Does an unofficial visit mean that the university is limited in the amount of contact it can have with the recruit during that particular visit?

Okay,I'm expecting up to four verbals for 2009. We got one, now the others should start showing up in the next two weeks.

Hoopgurlz article on uncommitted players . . .

I think it's sort of funny that they overlook the fact that Texas could still land 4 of the Top 12 players on their list. It might be wishful thinking on my part, but I'm keeping the faith . . .
