Rats From a Sinking Ship

It is interesting to note that most of this "fan"aticism about leaving games early comes from those who attended UT during the Mack Brown "come early, be loud, stay late, wear orange" era. I know...there are exceptions.

But keep in mind that some of us attended Texas at an earlier time when you could come and go when you wanted and wear what you wanted. Yet, in spite of us not being "super fans," the Horns fared well. Texas was ranked # 1 and played for the national title the year before I started at Texas, and then while I was a UT student, we beat Alabama and finished # 2 one year and finished another year one muffed punt away from a national title. Remember that the Horns won three national titles before we all started wearing orange, standing up for long periods of time, and demanding everyone stay through the Eyes.

So, to some of us older fans, the fanatical belief by some that you must dress in the same color, arrive at the same time, leave at the same time, and stand for large portions of the game is somewhat akin to the Borg Collective...or perhaps to religious fanaticism, where you're not a "true believer" unless you do absolutely everything expected.

It is ironic to me that, at a time when lots of kids go to A&M only because they can't get into Texas, we are becoming increasingly aggy in what is expected of Texas fans during football games. What's next: Are we all going to lock arms and saw Reveille's tail off?

As much as I give to the university, foundation and for tickets, which I believe are highest in the nation...I will do as I damn please. I leave early and come in late all the time regardless whether we are winning or losing.

I don't think I've ever been in a louder game than the 1989 OU game and the 1990 Houston game. I can't say the atmosphere is better now. It's not worse.

1990 U of H was indeed the loudest. One reason is that fans could stomp on the bleachers and make the stadium rumble. Now all those Longhorn Seatbacks are in the way.

That UH game was loud, but the circumstances were the perfect storm. The 1989 OU was the loudest most insane crowd I have ever seen. Thousands of fans on the field and the north goal posts were gone in seconds. It was so COMPLETELY unexpected (as opposed to say the USC game). Holding the lead the entire game only to have OU be given a great spot on 4th down and then score. There is a reason that they call him PETER THE GREAT.

Didn't really intend to reply to your original post, but since you persist I will.

Those thousands of fans that left built the ship of which you speak, and they will build it back up next weekend.

Get over yourself.

In '97 I stayed until the end, partly because the aisles were full of folks leaving and I couldn't go anywhere and the other reason is it was like watching a train wreck, you know, you see what's going to happen, it's like slow motion, and you can't take your eyes off...I was about the only person wearing orange in my section at the final gun. It was also very easy to get out by then too!

Hell, this fan base leaves early when the team is WINNING by too much.

Show of hands: How many of you were actually around to see Vince Young jog off the field after what turned out to be his final game at DKR?

Half of you with your hands in the air are lying.

I've been in some situations where I was in front of a crowd and I noticed when people left, but on stage, you can see that. Is it different from the field? I would imagine the sight lines are different. I'm not trying to fan the flames, I'm truly interested. Any of you who might have been on the field in the past, do you notice when the crowd thins out?
