More Gary's coaching than talent level, particularly since Katy now has 8 high schools
And Gary’s predecessor, Mike Johnston, won a few titles while he was here. Katy HS has been fortunate to have consistently great coaching for about 20 years now, even while the city has seen all the growth you mention.

The Tigers lost their opener this year to North Shore, 35-21, but have posted good scores in most games since the loss.

Dion,

To quote my good friend Rick Lantz, "Before you can win, you gotta defend".

Amazing what you can do when you give up zero points when the game is in doubt.

Gary's dad used to come to some of our games with Phyllis & T Jones. Always enjoyed visiting with him.

I have a question about "crabtree's catch". Isn't it true if Earl had knocked Crabtree out of bounds at the end of the game then tech would simply kick a field goal to win. If true then Earl's missed tackle is not as big as it seems.
The dropped pick by Gideon will never be forgotten. Unfortunately for a great player, with a great career, in a very talented defensive backfield. It will never be forgotten.
A Bill Buckner moment.
Earl, and Brown are brought up for angles, and effort for a dream season on the line.
Young players a year early by most experts opinions.
We didn’t have it that night after running the gauntlet of an incredibly difficult schedule. But still had the win in our hands, literally.

Dion,

In case you missed it, Katy won again tonight. They managed to outscore Taylor, but when your opponent does NOT score (for some posters that means ZERO points against), it's hard to lose.

Yeah. The missed opportunity was if we had tackled him in bounds, they may have not been able to rush to the line to spike it in time.

Tech had recently missed a FG (which led to the Malcolm Williams long TD) and barely made another that was almost blocked. I'll take my special teams chances over Earl "mishearing" a whistle and not bodying Crabtree out of bounds, at a minimum.

Or, you know, Gideon could have caught the pick.

There’s your answer. It was a room service lollipop. Sad, but it’s a play that will reside in infamy.
I'm sure Blake Gideon gave his all for the burnt orange while here, but I could've done without him on the field after that dropped interception opportunity. He got onto the field because of Will Muschamp's love for him, the love that existed because Gideon reminded Muschamp of himself in college....when a 2 star DB from Leander is your "quarterback of the defense", your program is not on the rise (and as he continued to start the program started to fade)…..I feel the same way about Breckyn Hager....when a 2-star legacy D-lineman is your inspiration/motivation, you're not really "there/back" on defense.....

What's supposed to happen there is when the two players collide, the ball subtly shifts back to the QB. So while the other team is standing there pointing and laughing, the QB casually jogs out of the pocket, then throws to a wide open receiver in the end zone.

The catch was good for a first down which automatically stops the clock giving tech more than enough time to call a timeout. As for Gideon dropping the INT people seem to remember it like Harrell lobbed it to him underhand from a yard away. That's not what happened.

There was a play in the MSU tOSU that was worse. I think it was 9-3 tOSU in the 2nd quarter. The Spartans were holding their own.

MSU had a first down at their own two and the center snapped the ball into the receiver coming in motion. Crazy risky play there. Of course, the ball went into the end zone and the QB, instead of falling on the ball for a safety, tried to pick it up. You know what happened next. The game went downhill from there for MSU.

I recollect that it was a tipped ball that Harrell should never have thrown, and it hung in the air for what seemed to be an eternity......I'll acknowledge I've been very harsh on Gideon for this, maybe not deserved.....he did his best while at Texas but I feel like his presence on the field was necessitated by zero competition for the spot......he may have known where to be and gotten some interceptions but he got burned so many times it cancelled out the good plays...

The ball was knocked in the air by the receiver who should have made the catch. It wasn't a difficult catch at all. Gideon had to react in the blink of an eye.

I assume the center just snapped it too early or too late, but I'm not sure. I know it happened once here at Texas but Daje Johnson actually reacted with superspeed and reached out and grabbed the snap and kept running so it basically ended up being an accidental jet sweep. He made a decent gain out of it, too, probably because if we didn't even know it was coming, how could the defense have known?
