Random Season News

I was wondering since players are allowed to make money off the brand, how will that be regulated and how will they be able to make sure a booster doesn't slip the recruit a lot of money under the table. Or maybe that's not really an issue.

In defense of our friend Bubba, the million dollar walk was NEVER "under the table"; in fact, there were no tables or furniture on the million dollar walk.

Correct but there were 100% look-aways or back turns. And then there is Big Red.

Don't forget burgers, Steak n Ale, Phillips, among others.

Best thing about BigRed was the one time GM's wife was sure easy to look at.

Is he going to show up for the halftime show in blackface again?

It was funny seeing that douche bullied into parroting "Black Lives Matter" over and over again at the last awards show he hosted. But maybe he just heard "Blackface Matters" and wondered what the big deal was.

My biggest question going into the season besides the QB battle is are we going to be able to put pressure on the opposing QB. Looks like we face returning QBs with experience. This will be a real test for our defense.
"May all our opposing QBs throw errant passes all game long"
Sept. 4 can't get here fast enough.

Texas WR Jake Smith enters transfer porta

Texas junior wide receiver Jake Smith has entered the transfer portal, 247Sports has learned.

Smith started six of the seven games he played in 2020, catching 23 passes for 294 yards and three touchdowns out of the slot. That followed a strong debut season in Austin, which saw Smith reel in 25 passes for 274 yards and six touchdowns. Those six scores ranked fourth-most among all FBS freshmen pass catchers in 2019.

The 6-foot, 195-pound Smith suffered a foot injury the first day of spring practice this year, preventing him from working with the Longhorns' new staff for the majority of the team's 15-practice spring allotment. Smith was cleared to return in late May for the team's summer conditioning.

"He's back," Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said in May. "He will be ready to go with us starting next week in our summer program."

With Smith potentially departing the program, Texas will lean heavily on third-year receiver Jordan Whittington. The former five-star recruit, who has often been injured throughout his career, was one of the stars of spring practice for the Longhorns working out of the slot. Whittington and Smith were expected to battle for the starting role inside.

Smith was a decorated recruit coming out of Notre Dame Prep in Scottsdale, Ariz., winning 2018 National Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. Smith finished his final season with Notre Dame Prep with 2,349 all-purpose yards, including 1,070 receiving and 741 yards rushing to go along with 39 total touchdowns.

A four-star recruit, per the 247Sports Composite, Smith ranked as the No. 49 overall player and the No. 8 receiver in the 2019 class.

Here's 247Sports' scouting report on Smith coming out of high school, via national analyst Blair Angulo:

"Compact and lean frame. Shy of 200 pounds, but room to gain muscle without sacrificing quickness. Athletic pass-catcher with soft hands. Lethal in open space. Versatility to line up at various spots in spread offense. Light on his feet as a route runner. Dynamic with the ball in his hands. Big threat to gain large chunks after the catch. Needs to bulk up to be able to take hits. Room for improvement in the red zone where windows are smaller. Upside to be a big-time Power Five contributor and late NFL Draft selection."

The NCAA introduced the transfer portal on Oct. 15, 2018, providing athletes a path to explore their options. Players do not need to ask permission from their coaching staff in order to transfer. They merely need to request that compliance enter their name. Usually, it takes 24-48 hours for a player to appear following their request. Schools are free to contact a player without restriction once their name appears in the portal.

While a player entering their name in the transfer portal means they intend to explore their options, it does not necessarily mean they will leave. A player is free to withdraw his name at any time. However, schools are under no obligation to keep a player on scholarship once they enter the portal.

There have been 2,518 players enter the transfer portal during the 2020-21 cycle, per a source.

We need WRs IF:

1) They run the right routes
2) They make the right reads
3) They find the hole in the zone
4)They come back to help their QB
5) They lay it all out to catch the ball - no alligator arms
6) They block downfield

In that case….we have 10 TE’s on the roster. :beertoast:

9) They don't always have one eye on the portal

Anyone's guess...but I would love to know the reasoning, with Whitt being injury prone makes little sense unless
A) purely ego
And/or
B) There's someone else or multiple others making a lot of noise in the slot. Anyone know who else had been getting reps there? When I saw this news my first thought was Ja'Tavion.

I will say I think, more than anything, the portal has uncovered a lot of egotism that was always present but now given more fuel...and an outlet.

Same here Rain, would sure love to know the ‘behind the scenes’ on this one. I know it’s none of my business but I’m always curious when a Horn leaves with seemingly no provocation. But who knows?

Seems like Smith was wanting to leave as soon as he got here.
Thought maybe Herman leaving would solve the problem but I was wrong.

Its too bad. Smith is really good and could have helped the horns turn into a stampede, a force to be reckoned with.
But who knows he may decide to stay. Perhaps he's feeling like the odd man out with all these racehorse thoroughbreds coming in. Competition. Guess he is just not feeling the vibe anymore or maybe he thinks he could be a star somewhere else.

The rumors started from day one on campus. Who knows what is the story.

I'm looking forward to the expanded playoff model if for no other reason that the horns maybe playing twice or three times in the post season.
But as I think about it some more if we play for the big 12 championship and then go on to play two or three other playoff games, that is asking an awful lot of college football players. I mean these are they best teams going head to head. That's a lot of violent action going on.

I really do believe that we will be a mainstay in the top 12. Depth will be absolutely critical to surviving in the playoffs.
And furthermore the players will absolutely deserve financial compensation when they are putting so much time, effort, and health on the line.

I was just examining the newly proposed 12 team playoff format.
If I understand it right, seeds 5- 12, if one of them reaches the championship game will have played 4 playoff games to win it all. FOUR. (One game less for top 4 seeds) That's heavy-duty football against top teams. That's great for fans but terrible for players. This is not including the league championship game. That would be FIVE. WOO. that's a 17 game season. Isn't that asking too much?
But, selfishly, I am all for it.
