I don’t care about “ceilings” or whether or not they are “really good,” etc. I just want to win NOW. If possible. Seems like other good teams of late have figured out that the transfer route is a good tool.
I was listening to Rod Babers on the radio.
He says if they are game planning for UL then Sark knows who his QB is.
You have to game plan around your QBs strengths and abilities so, unless both QBs have exactly the same attributes, he knows.

Garland played Nederland in Nederland for the championship in 56. Game was played in a driving rainstorm. Perhaps Bum Phillips finest coaching moment. Garland won 3-0, but Nederland had the ball inside Garland's 20 either 4 or 5 times, and Bum never tried the FG, which would have tied the game and he would have won on penetrations. He had a good FG kicker, and lamented to his death why he did that. Closest OA Phillips ever came to winning a championship at any level.
For everyone other than Sabre, Garland lost the '55 game on one play so the teams were fairly even over that two-year span.

Moving forward to 1964 Sabre will also say Galena Park actually beat Garland, but they didn't - check the record book.

According to Coach Bill Ellington, the single greatest run in Texas HS football history. Coach said that Garland hit Gordon LeBouef 13 times in that 60+ yards on last play of game. Gordon had to be carried off the field because he was playing with 102 fever and collapsed in the end zone.

The single most controversial play in Texas HS football history. To this day a stranger can walk up to Larry Davis and ask "did you catch the ball"; Larry will get red faced and say "damn sure did". Still one of the greatest games I've ever seen. Played in Rice Stadium. Galena Park would score, and they knew what was coming - Ronnie Scroggins running behind Gene Mayes ramming the ball right down the Jackets throat. Two great teams & two great coaches.

Well certainly Sark knows volumes more than I do. I am excited for Card, but didn’t vote for him.

My greatest concern is what I will call the “Buechele factor.” I preferred Buechele over Sam. I was wrong, and I might be wrong this time as well, but for the reverse reason.

If Card is frozen in the pocket and getting sacked, that will be a troubling indicator.

But, let’s just win, baby.

What am I missing? Did Sarkisian make that statement? All I saw was "sources", or maybe "247 sources". How often are they right? Maybe they will be, but until Sark says so, they need to shut the **** up and stay away from their keyboard.

Report the news, quit trying to make the news.

To all the distraught comments to come about Thompson not being named #1 and how well he played in the Alamo Bowl, remember this is a completely different system and style of offense. I've heard Card has been in the film room more than any other player including Thompson. Never goes out with friends or the team and is constantly working or studying.

Who knows what he'll do on the field next Saturday but it sounds like he has outplayed and out worked Thompson for this opportunity. Sit back and relax and enjoy the ride. :smokin:

To me, this is good news. First, Card had to overcome clearly starting behind, so that makes me believe that he earned it. Second, by the eye test, he looked clearly better (to me) at the Orange/White game. Third, Card was the higher-recruited, higher pedigree player in the first place.
I feel bad for Casey, but it’s not a popularity contest.

Agree. Sark hasn't said anything yet to the press/media. But it seems the team has been told, and there are multiple sources saying it, so it does look like a done deal that Card will start next week.

But at least one pay-site has said that Sark plans to play both QBs in the game. That matches with what Sark said in the press conference this week - that as the season goes on, one player will get majority of the practice reps, but not right now, etc. It makes sense to start Card, because we know that Casey would not have game-time jitters and all that

Another pay-site says that Casey is unhappy but that there is no indication of him transferring or anything.

But there is also no report that Casey has not been working hard. He has been focused too. I have seen a counter-view also reported by some pay sites that Casey has been aloof but does a lot of film study and all too. I'm a bit confused about what is right. It must be because there is really only little that sets these two guys apart on those matters. I take it that neither QB is a problem when it comes to work ethic and general team support. They may have some preferences for one over the other but nothing problematic if either is made the QB.

I don't know the details but the kind of thing above - like InsideTexas having a deal with Card - is just tough to stomach. Aren't there all kinds of conflicts of interest when media/press sites have tie-ups with players like this? Nothing illegal I suppose, but not that clean, from news-ethics standpoint....

I say again, either HC is the better of the two good qbs, or he sucked less than the two, “meh” qbs. Either way, feed Bijan, play defense, and just win baby!

Glad that’s over with. As far as Casey coming off the bench and lighting up Colorado but not being able to recapture the moment, it’s not that unusual. I seem to recall Clint Longley’s Thanksgiving Day against the Redskins. People actually wanted Longley to replace Staubach after that performance.

I also thought maybe Casey’s CU moment may have been like Jerrod Heard’s Cal moment.

For one game, it looked like Jerrod Heard was Vince Young.

That makes sense at first, but then when you think about it - every year there are teams who go into week 1 not knowing who their starter is. Do all those teams' coaches simply refuse to do any planning for the game?

38 hours after word began leaking on QB1 and people still voting..now for Card...SMH
...I ain't sharing my gift card, people!!

"...And in a stirring comeback, Card has amazingly now tied Casey Thompson with 28 votes! The world watches and waits to see if he can now take his first lead of the contest only two days after being named starter."
(Dion using Dominion voting system apparently)
Joke joke...it was just a little joke

Better not try to use your "card " on Amazon just yet
Notice the title is NOT who is the Starting QB for first game.
Also notice when poll ends :coolnana:

I didn't say anything about Casey's work effort. I've heard he has been working his *** off too. Whoever ended up not getting the start would be dejected.

In poker, just as with Texas football, sometimes the Card just falls your way...

That said...if game is out of hand by halftime, I would like to see meaningful action for Thompson as well. Historically, it seems like Texas has only liked playing the QB2 for mop-up duties which don't mimic true game action. Then we were in trouble when QB2 NEEDED to step up...at least for a while. And we don't have a game or two this year that we can afford to risk on 'adjusting.'

Lol...Darn..
..good point.
Though I'm on record as saying I believe Card can be the best UT QB since Colt, so...Obviously I think he will win out.
Admittedly, I thought Casey would start this year until about 3-4 weeks ago...and then Card emerge and be the man either later in the year or starting in '22 and thrive. The events of the last few weeks aren't that surprising...but have expedited things beyond what I or most anyone I think probably expected.

One more thing on this ..one I think VYfan did a good job noting above..
Card winning this battle bodes well for our current QB situation IMO.
You want a guy you think is good getting beat out by a young guy you expect can be great. (Or a real close competition and the original favorite slams the door shut at the end and 1 and 2 are confident/capable/motivated...but either is good)...Big time programs have QB battles/situations like this and we haven't had it in awhile. You want a young guy to come in and take it and Card has done that. If he sticks, and CT doesn't bolt we will have likely the best 1-2 situation we have had in many years. And yes, for those of you high on Ehlinger/Beuchele first year or so w Sam starting I am counting that. too...though I fault coaching for some of why I don't rate that 1-2 higher relative to the current duo.
I am not saying Card and/or CT come out of the gates blazing....just that the setup is very favorable relative to just about all recent years going back to 05/06 or so. I'd rather them have a little more experience, but we have to start somewhere.
Again, need CT to stick around and that factor is one reason I had kind of hoped he'd hold Card off another year...but overall I think this was a good competition and outcome/set up for us. JMHO and I'd love to hear arguments..
(but chill w the AlamoBowl one.. it is weak)
