Post-Trump GOP

This just in...after DJT goes 33-0 in Texas primaries, he swings for the fences and picks underdog Alabama to play in 2022 CFP.

It seems the Trump influence is very strong, but with a relatively small slice of the GOP. There are some that will take his endorsement and use it as their voting guide but not many. It seems Trump's biggest impact is when both candidates are relatively unknown and Trump can give one the lead with an early endorsement. Other than that, his influence seems to be relatively minimal....Even in the primaries.
It will certainly be very minimal in the General.... if not actually negative. So how quickly do Trump candidates from the primaries start to wave off on Trump association after November?

I think his influence is huge until it's not. His base loves it. He will kill in primaries. He will do good in red state general elections. National elections are another issue. Independents and middle of the road voters despise his obvious grifting. The winner of the next national election will be who gets the most moderates to vote for them.
 
I look at the Oz v McCormick fight. both are relative newby pol's and Oz already had more name recognition. so you gotta think they were pretty close even if trump had stayed out altogether. but even after trump endorsed Oz he only moved the needle a few points. Granted, it was enough to move the needle from L to W for Oz, but in shear numbers it doesn't seem that significant. For Oz, i do think the Trump endorsement was enough to overcome the likely association to Oprah and left-wingers that he built his fame on.

The Trump endorsement means even less when there are candidates with actual track records to lean on.

that's funny. Liz is a different animal. She even angered me, who is not a big Trump fan. My biggest beef with trump is that he takes a flamethrower to the party when he doesn't get his way. She did something similar but for different reasons. She has repeatedly cast aspersions at the GOP and gave the MSM attack/talking points as she has battled Trump.
 
Generally agree with you all, but I think there clearly are states where his influence is very big. The Alabama senate runoff is an obvious example. Mo Brooks likely would have won had he not said we should move on from the 2020 election causing Trump to pull his to endorsement.

Where Trump is strongest are areas in which the GOP is heavily rural or working class and to a lesser extent, the Rust Belt. In those kinds of states, his endorsements are pretty important. In states in which the GOP is largely suburban, his endorsement has less clout.

Since Switzer asked, Liz Cheney is almost surely ******. Can you name a city in Wyoming besides Cheyenne? Neither can I, and I'm not from Oklahoma. That's why she's ******.

Yeah, she's done in Republican circles. It'll be framed as a Trump issue, and that definitely hurts her in a state like Wyoming. However, she has gone much further than that - bashing the party for "white supremacy," etc. She has basically turned into a MSNBC host. That's fine. She has that right, but it shouldn't surprise her that it's not going to go over well in Republican circles. She's pulling a reverse Tulsi Gabbard on steroids.

Lol. Believe it or not, that isn't from living in Europe. The reason I don't say y'all is because though I mostly grew up in Texas, I was born and lived my first 8 years in Oakland, California. By the time I moved to Texas, my speaking and accent were mostly set. I can sound Texan-ish at times, but I don't use Texan expressions like y'all, fixin' to, etc.

I flew with a guy from near Pittsburgh. They say "yinz". I know some people around here who say "yous". At least yinz is a Yiddish thing I think. Yous is just stupid.
 
we were at peace, the economy was humming, lots of jobs and the Maximum Lider got beat by a guy who barely has a pulse. The idea that he might do better in 2024 is quixotic. He has a lot of influence in places like Mississippi, Alabama and Texas and in Republican primaries in lots of places. But the public at large has had it with him. He lost to Joe Biden, for god's sake.

His only hope and the only hope of the GOP is that the Democrats are so beholden to their disparate elements that don't like each other that they might splinter ala 1860 and large parts refuse to support whichever lame candidate emerges. For example, if Butgigger is on the ticket there are a lot of people who will not vote for the ticket; same for Kamala Kneepads or Bernie or AOC. The reparations movement is full of steam (or pick your own noun) as is the anti gun and anti petroleum factions. In fact it is hard to see how the weak party leaders can steer a convention into nominating candidates who would not zero out some constituencies.

Come to think of it, that is how that Giant Worm got elected in 2016. So maybe he has some life left.

3 things.

1. I respect the GOP who didn't back down to Trump. They're few and far betweeen and show some ethics and scruples.

2. My lawnmower guy used the term "you'ins" about 5 times when I dropped my mower off last week.

3. The Dem's should pay attention to this. The guy's followers threatened his family yet he'd still vote for him.

Democrats need to have a little more self-awareness and a lot less self-righteousness. Has it occurred to you that your leaders might be the reason sensible conservatives might still vote Trump over your nominee? Maybe the problem is you, not them. Give them a choice that doesn't mean judicial tyrants (a bigger threat to democracy than a guy wanting electors substituted), nutty social policy in schools, 8 percent inflation, and $7 gas, and you might be surprised at how many on the center-Right ditch Trump. It took Biden refusing to take court-packing off the table to give Trump my vote. The standards are incredibly low. Basically, don't be a lunatic, but that was asking too much.

Well, Biden is a lot of things but he's not a lunatic and he's not trying to overthrow the government to remain in power. I'm sad that this is what we have to pick from. I'd vote for you.

He may not be a lunatic, but his administration is doing many crazy things. He has delegated to some bad apples. He may not be trying to overthrow the government, but his judicial nominees are. It's not as ugly as January 6, but if you take away the ability of my elected representatives to do my will without written legal basis, you're still overthrowing the government.

And Joe apparently is either (1) not aware of what's going on, (2) agrees with what's going on, or (3) is being ignored by his advisors as they pursue their individual agenda items. Noe of those three alternatives is acceptable.

Honestly, though I think he has long wanted to be president, I don't think he was particularly interested in it at his age. I think he was enjoying his retirement and basically done. Jill Biden made comments to that effect a few years before he ran. Knowing that its younger base of candidates was a parade of freaks that couldn't win nationally, I think the Party begged him to run, and I think he did it reluctantly on the condition that he would delegate as much as he possibly could if he won. He delegated to guys like Ron Klain, who's obviously interested in appeasing and motivating the Party's left flank.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Within the Democratic Party, the far-left is the squeaky wheel - they squeak a lot and get press coverage, so the Party leaders have to appease them a bit to get them to stop squeaking. Meanwhile, the remaining centrists within the Party don't squeak as much as the far-left, so they don't get greased like the far-left.
