Disclaimer, this is not about jobs and the economy so if that is your only focus stop reading now. You have been warned, this is not about jobs economy . not even osama. If you choose to read it don't whine later.

It is about the image and standards that our White House should set. if this " Poet" is allowed to spout as a guest of the WH they have sunk to a new low of civility and respect.

From Daily Caller
"First Lady Michelle Obama has scheduled a poetry evening for Wednesday, and she’s invited several poets, including a successful Chicago poet and rapper, Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr., AKA “Common.” However, Lynn is quite controversial, in part because his poetry includes threats to shoot police and at least one passage calling for the “burn[ing]” of then-President George W. Bush.

Back in 2003, First Lady Laura Bush held a poetry evening, and she invited several poets to reprise the work of Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes and Walt Whitman. Although none of those poets had urged violence against a president, Bush canceled the event after left-of-center poets protested and threatened to disrupt the event.

A Pome from Common
"Letter to the Law

Dem boy wanna talk… [indistinguishable]

Whatcha gon do if ya got one gun?

I sing a song for the hero unsung

with faces on the mural of the revolution

No looking back cos’ in back is what’s done

Tell the preacher, god got more than one son

Tell the law, my Uzi weighs a ton

I walk like a warrior,

from them I won’t run

On the streets, they try to beat us like a drum

In Cincinnati, another brother hung

A guinea won’t see the sun

with his family stung

They want us to hold justice

but you handed me none

The same they did to Kobe and Michael Jackson

make them the main attraction

Turn around and attack them

Black gem in the rough

You’re rugged enough

Use your mind and nine-power, get the government touch

Them boys chat-chat on how him pop gun

I got the black strap to make the cops run

They watching me, I’m watching them

Them dick boys got a lock of cock in them

My people on the block got a lot of pok* in them

and when we roll together

we be rocking them to sleep

No time for that, because there’s things to be done

Stay true to what I do so the youth dream come

from project building

Seeing a fiend being hung

With that happening, why they messing with Saddam?

Burn a Bush cos’ for peace he no push no button

Killing over oil and grease

no weapons of destruction

How can we follow a leader when this a corrupt one

The government’s a g-unit and they might buck young black people

Black people In the urban area one

I hold up a peace sign, but I carry a gun.

Peace, ya’ll.”

Of course Common has every right to make a vid that calls for killing cops and a President. EVERY right. And make all the money he can off of it.

What does it say about a wife of a POTUS that would invite as an honored guest someone who calls for a POTUS to be burned?
However I doubt if rightwingers would disrupt it like leftwingers threatened to disrupt Laura Bush's readings of Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman

I do not know who Michael Berry is but I will google him.

How anyone can think it is acceptable for people living in our WH to honor men who call for killing of police and burning a President?

He's talk show host in Houston, that was talking about Common's poetry today. He get's carried away at times, but he's pretty good.

The world is a lot more comfortable if you only listen to people telling you what you already believe from a value set completely in alignment with your own. I don't know the poet or his entire work, but finding a rapper that never sang something yukky would be pretty tough.

I don't think you have to like all the works of a poet to find value in his or her work. For instance Shel Silverstein wrote a lot of good stuff I've read to my children. He also wrote for Payboy and songs like "A Boy Named Sue" that glorified violence, and "Put another log on the fire" that was not particularly respectful of women. (Personally, I've enjoyed listening to both those song without letting them twist my values.)
"Gotcha": journalism and a never ending stream of outrage are not necessarily helpful to discourse and mutal understanding in this country. Finding a serious artist who explored a wide range of viewpoints over his lifetime would give any hardworking journalist plenty of objectionable "news items", particularly if he had little interest in context or making allowances for maturation of viewpoints.

I think the Burning Bush was a play on the notion of how God spoke to man and how GW Bush spoke to the nation regarding Iraq.

Also, as far as the attitude toward the police, do you believe the police have never been instruments of oppression in this country? Do you believe that there are no individual police officers who abuse their power? You may have noticed the color of the people on the bad end of that deal. It's no wonder some African Americans are suspicious of the police. He articulates that with defiance. He's singing a song not firing a rocket launcher.

I doubt much will come of having him to the White House, but I don't think it hurts to say even this voice is part of the country. Of course, the hand-wringing hysteria addicts and amateur operatives will make themselves believe that this Chicago Thug/Islamist terrorist/Radical Christian revolutionary/foreign-born/transcript-hidin' President is just showing his true colors regarding the police and the safety of presidents. Woo hoo.

It astounds me that posters here shift focus or defend the decision to have this guy step foot on the White House grounds. I have nothing to add other than I cannot identify with you at all.

next thing you know people will complain Obama is disrespecting the Oval Office by putting his feet on the desk!

no cowboy poets? i thought they were going to die out if they didnt get any money. this would be an opportunity for them to make a comback. and where is maya angelou? i thought she always made appearances at these events.

I am aure this is a misunderstanding, and Obama doesn't really know what his lyrics are, just like he had no idea his minister, advisor, and mentor of 20 years was a racist idealogue.

Eight years of a retarded cowboy and you're concerned about the WH image now?

I imagine he had better grades and test scores than obama. if he is retarded, what does that make obama?

Amazing to think some would think pointing out a lack of decorum from people in our WH is a bad thing.

No one thinks Common does not have the right to call for the shooting of police or even to call for a President to be burned. Have at it and make all the money in the world if you can.

If people can't see the difference between exercising free speech and having the POTUS wife honor someone who called for shooting of police and burning of a President I feel sadness for them.

Turns out Common was a big Obama supporter in '08 and this isn't his first WH function. This is just the Prez paying back his Homies. Kinda like givin' a space shuttle to NYC, etc.
