Sorry, Lisa, that was Brooke Smith to schooled CP, not Appel. I stand corrected that it was Smith, not Appel, WHO SCHOOLED CP. I guess I enjoyed it so much that it seems like yesterday.
Still doesn't change my opinion that CP is the third best post player in the college game, behind Charles and Appel.
I think we all agree that CP is a very dominant college player...that is undeniable. I felt like the end of the streak was a good thing for OU because it took the pressure off of the team a bit, then she turned right back around and put all the pressure back on the team with her statement about the scholarship money. I bet Coale almost crapped her pants when she heard that statement.
I think that Robinson's speed and defense is the X factor that increases OU's chances of advancing in the tournament. Robinson is one of the few guards that I think can keep up with Montgomery from UCONN. And I can imagine that Amanda Thompson would play some good D against Maya Moore. She has the size and quickness to match up pretty well. I also think that OU would play UCONN better today than they would when they lost by 28 because Hand has really advanced her game.
Stanford is still my pick to get to the final against UCONN, assuming they are on opposite sides of the bracket.
One has to admire Courtney for her courage and determination even though she probably will be able to afford the money in the long run and maybe put unfair pressure on the rest of the coaches and team. If they fail to win the NC she will be ridiculed for a while but eventually it will be forgotten over time.
It reminds me of several that delivered: Mohammed Ali backed up his talk by winning fights as did Joe Namath when the Jets beat the Colts in the third super bowl in a big upset. Also one remembers Babe Ruth pointing where he was going to hit a home run after two straight strikes. All delivered. But they didn't put any money on the line like Courtney. I am of course by no means an Oklahoma fan but if they deliver it will be extra remarkable because she has put her money where her mouth is. Courage indeed.
Bubba needs to get a life....Coale is a good coach, and they are NOT going to win the NC, and it will NOT be "Coale's fault"....they just don't have the firepower that UConn has....
Yes, as he said, his daughters have contributed a lot to the team, but they are not the end-all and be-all of the OU team.....it takes more than just your 2 daughters, dude..
I was so bothered by this give back my scholarship thing that until now I haven't even read this thread. I'm sure CP thought this was a positive action. But my initial reaction - and my primary belief now - was that basketball is a team game. No one player is responsible for any win or loss. I have trouble believing that giving back a scholarship would be acceptable without thinking that everyone else should do the same. It seems to imply that if OU were to win a championship it would be all about CP, and not about the team. Further, if you do the best you can you have nothing to regret…..does this imply some possibility that CP might not always play to the best of her ability? I don't think that is what she meant, but it sure comes across that way. I suspect that she meant well, and just didn't think this through. But, it still bothers me.
It is interesting because I admire players coming out of high school who believe that any place they sign will win - because they will make their teams better. I admire players who want to go help build something special. But, this scholarship thing somehow crosses a line and is different in a way that I have trouble explaining.
I agree with others who have posted - OU will not win the national championship. OU has an excellent basketball team. But, I believe there are teams (at least one) which are better. This is not because CP is not a good enough college basketball player. Only the third best post in the country is still pretty darn good.
And, I also agree that a good college player is not necessarily a good WNBA player. I think that CP will struggle in the pros. Her size will no longer give her all of the advantages that it has in college and she will need to make significant adjustments. Texas fans certainly understand this. Edwina Brown was voted the best college basketball player in the country her senior season. Yet she struggled in the WNBA. This takes nothing away from what they both accomplished in college.
I think Courtney is a catch 22. She takes up so much space that it is difficult for others to get close enough to rebound or defend her. We all agree she'd be a better player if she were slimmer and in better shape - but if she were, she wouldn't take up so much space, and would lose some advantage she currently has. I do agree though, she will probably not be as good in the pros as she has been in college.
