I just came across this article in the NYT a few days ago.I have great respect for the Navy, especially the aviators who have to land on a short, pitching deck with near-zero margin for error. As a USAF pilot, I found it very comforting to have 12,000 feet of earth-bound concrete in front of me when I landed.
And down below, the nuclear radiation won't kill you. It's all the other stuff: chemicals, high voltage, fires, highly pressurized gas that could cut your torso in half, asbestos (where it's still used), fumes and gasses, 1/2 ton metal things falling on you in the shipyard...Not to mention the physical strain of doing this over many years.
