OTHER GAMES

Seen in the Washington Post this morning in an article about this weekend’s slate of games:

“Three of the four teams currently slotted for the College Football playoff — Georgia, Ohio State and Michigan — are big favorites Saturday, so the chances of a big shake-up in college football’s penultimate weekend are slim. There’s always TCU, which is only giving a few points against Baylor, but that’s par for the course for the Horned Frogs: They haven’t been favored by double digits since a Sept. 10 game against something called Tarleton State, and they seem to be living a charmed existence. So keep your expectations in check.”

Ooof.

Have to admit the German fans singing Country Roads during Bucs Hawks game was cool
That was super cool!

In late 1991 I took an 8-day solo trip to Germany and Switzerland — Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich, Lucerne, and Heidelberg. In Berlin I rented a spare room for one night from a small family there, a couple (British soldier who married a German girl) with one young kid. The dad drove me around Berlin a bit, showing me some of the sights and talking history. This was just two years after the wall came down, and it had run right next to his apartment building.

He turned on the radio in his car and it was playing some American pop tune, Madonna I think it was, or Michael Jackson. That surprised me so I asked him about it, and he said American music was huge there, and the young people could sing along with most of the popular tunes — word for word — even if they didn’t speak any English at all. Just mimicking sounds I guess, but I thought that was super interesting. The universal appeal of music and all that.

Aside: I remember seeing some signs around town promoting an upcoming Richard (not Karl) Marx concert. The sign actually said “not Karl” on it :smile1:

What an experience. You an American, in Berlin staying with a Brit married to a German. Small world.
He was very nice to drive you around.
"Not Karl "

I'm reading low temp in Lawrence may be below 20 degrees.... gametime may be in low 30's .....

Kind of like Swedish pop group ABBA, lol.
(Although I find them easier to understand than a lot of American bands from that era)

Turn the temp down and put on your Longhorn onesy or snuggy or whatever they are called.

I did my part last week at DKR, and stayed to the bitter end. I’m definitely a warm weather guy.

11/19

Some good games today. Near the end of the conference play.

Illinois v Michigan - Bielema gets blasted by Big Blue.

NW at Purdue - Purdue doesn’t look bad lately

TCU v Baylor - The big game in this region. I see TCU’s offense getting back on track and their D keeping Baylor in check. The #4 Frogs stay unbeaten.

Yale at Harvard - not great football, but a great historical rivalry. Good stadium too.

Wisconsin at N - Wisc is down but should still take the Hiskers

Indiana are Mich St - Spartans suffer a disappointing year.

Iowa at Minnesota - they’re thankful for that done about now …

Oregon St at ASU - #23 Beavers make short work of Sun devils

Miami at Clemson - Hurricanes downgraded to Tropical Storms.

11/19 more

Georgia at Kentucky - dogs are too good

Penn St at Rutgers - bad guys win today

Ohio State at Maryland - Bucks win and set up huge game vs Michigan

BC at ND - Irish

Tech at ISU - cold and windy. Like both of these teams like it.

USC v UCLA - the great intracity matchup. Good match up #7 vs #16. Bruins finally play a game with more than 20,000 fans in attendance.

Colo Star at AF - AF flies high in this front range foothills rivalry.

Tenn at So Carolina — Vols prevail over a decent Gamecock team.

Okla St at OU - Pokes take Bedlam this year

Cuse at Wake - Wake and their QB prevail

Ole Miss at Ark - Lane has his hands full tonight.

Baylor’s O came in well prepared. Some nifty play calling in their first drive, including a bootleg, to get them in Frog territory. Then the Bears’ running attack took over and they rammed it down the Frogs’ throats.

7-0 Baylor.
