Orange/White Spring Game

Very impressed with:

1. Murphy
2. Cook
3. Ewers
4. J. Whitt
5. Worthy
6. Red
7. Hill
8. Mitchell
9. Blue

Not in that order...

Blue played well also. That 31 yard touchdown run was Bijan-esque. he had some other good runs also.
Saw one bad play by Red: he failed to make a block on Ant hill that allowed a sack. Choice will let him know about it.
Speaking of Choice, he had a nice long teaching session with Baxter after his fourth down touchdown run. It's nice to see teaching sessions on the sidelines.
Like I have said before, coach Choice is worth every penny he gets and then some. With Choice we will always get the highest name running backs coming out each year. Gibson may be next. He loves Choice.

Well, my main preference is that Worthy not play. To me, he never catches a ball where I say, “only a rare WR could have caught that.” Sometimes he is open because of his speed or moves, but then he sometimes drops the ball or runs away from the trajectory of the ball. I prefer someone who gets open sometimes, but also catches contested balls and sometimes bails the QB out of an imperfect pass (maybe when the qb has to throw blindly when the pocket is caving in). Worthy is not that guy, but Cook and Mitchell seem to be.
I agree with what you said about Worthy.
However, RG111 said that Worthy is the best "second to none" at tracking a ball. Hilarious, he obviously didn't see enough of Worthy last year.
But I am not going to be mad at Worthy at the beginning of this next season. I think he sees the new talent that is here and he is going to tone down the attitude and concentrate on being a better teammate. Worthy has talent and passion and will make big plays this season.
And speaking of giving grace, I see humility in Ewers also. He really wants to perform at a high level. He seems to have had a mental adjustment. I think he has the potential to be great. If he gains confidence as his game goes on, like VY did, we may see the horns not only in the playoffs but in the title game cause we have the surrounding talent.

Bro, this is a little rough. First off, I never want my QB to throw blindly. Second, I’ll always want a guy who’s open versus one who is covered. Yes, I’d like a dude who gets you some 50/50 balls, but they call em 50/50 for a reason. It also seems to me that if you’re looking for “rare” catches that’d imply they don’t often occur. I’d prefer a dude open 70% of the time and catching 60% than one open 40% and catching 50%. That also seems counter to a first impression on Cook after finishing his first spring. A true frosh doing rare stuff in non games is a bit counterintuitive.

We can be combative about me being too literal. Yes, I’m sure I was too literal. But also when the first thought in the post is wishing someone doesn’t see the field kinda sets the tone.

I am a certain players biggest critic, but I’m not sure I’ve wished failure and benching for said player but more so improve on certain aspects of your game. It’s a little ironic to me that we wish failure rather than maturity and growth for our own. In essence, we’re saying we hope Worthy doesn’t run up 1,500 yards and 10+ TDs.

Boy did Mitchell make a good choice in coming to the horns (though staying Georgia might have been good also).
He is poised to be a huge playmaker on a team that is going places. That one handed touchdown catch was a thing of beauty. sweetness. And he made that one handed catch going across the path of the ball as opposed to running vertically with the path of the ball. More difficult. And he decisively went up with one hand, that was cool also. If he had gone up with two hands the ball probably would have glanced off his finger tips.
We may be witnessing a star.
I think he caught every pass that touched his hands. Just keep dialing his number, Sark.
Now we have Worthy on one side and Mitchell on the other with Wittington carving up the middle and Sanders working the middle to the outside. whew, I think even I can find an open receiver. I just cant make the throw.
Then there is Neyor and Cook!

On another note, I can't stand it when a receiver let's a ball go through his hands, like Sanders did, on a crossing route. He's got to position his hands right. One hand has to be across the nose of the football to completely stop the progress of the ball which is usually moving pretty fast. Then pull it in and at the same time trapping the back of the ball with the other hand. That's the way to do it so that the ball doesnt travel through both hands.

AD Mitchell from Georgia was a huge get. The stick route on third down was a thing of beauty. That type of speed/elusiveness and size with good route running has been missed on the outside around here. I suspect Blue will be #1 with Baxter coming in every 3 series to start the season at least. I like Red back there too. He really ran hard and determined on WR screens last year. Ewers for sure improved but still a few plays or throws that leave your head scratching but efficient and some really nice throws. Malik is impressive from limited sample and I suspect he sees some non-clean up time this year. JWhitt is a man. He needs 10 targets a game minimum.

Don’t forget that 79 yard TD from Malik was the second one, first one preceded the completion and was a drop. Two beautifully thrown deep balls. Kid has a ton of promise.

You may be right.

Good post YW. One spring game is too early to condemn or place too much praise on someone.
But from what I saw with my eyes, Maalik Murphy, AD, and Blue are much needed new difference makers on offense. Cook as a young freshmen WR also stood out.
We really need to get a nice NIL package to keep Maalik around for a long time. That kid has the “It” factor for sure.

Gotta remember that Blue opted out his Senior year in high school and only had 15 carries last year. It appears he has put on more muscle and is ready to go.
Hopefully he will be able to contribute and is not buried on the depth chart.

I could not watch the Orange vs Whie but how productive was Baxter?

RB, QB and WR rooms are really loaded as well as several defensive positions! Could be a really great year!!!

The game seemed to be better organized than in the past. The only issue that I have is we really didn't know what groups were playing. 1 v. 2's, etc. It seemed they switched players and groupings on both sides of the ball on an irregular basis.

Also, unless they told the kicker not to kick through the endzone, Texas may need a kicker.

Note we had an unusually large class of early enrollees and transfers, which made a huge difference at WR, QB, RB, etc. This is what made the spring game look a lot more advanced.

I thought attendance was highest I’ve seen and many more exciting plays in our Spring Game than I can remember too. Malik is going to push Ewers hard and unless Sark is as hard headed as we feared last year we should see him play some this year. Great video of he and his Dad btw gave me goose bumps I love seeing the parents demonstrating that kind of pride.

Agree Nash
It has been a hard year for Maalik who has handled it well. He looked choked up walking toward his very proud Dad.

Fellers,

We are loaded. When dudes start competing against each other in practice, you are in business. That’s huge to get talent pushing talent.

We still have to prove it, but I believe this staff knows who they want and are getting them for the most part.

it will be interesting to see who starts at RB in the fall. Brooks, Red or Blue. I'm not thinking Keilan though He is the fastest he just goes down too easily. Baxter, needs experience and acclamation and he is off to a good start on that. It will probably be Brooks. He has the inside lane but Bled (Blue and Red) are right there. Red surely has the best hands but Blue had the best run yesterday. Red missed a key block that led to a sack, his biggest weakness at this moment. That will be the position to watch this fall. I think I will leave it to the coaches to decide.LOL

Unless he is hurt, Brooks will be the starter against Rice. As I mentioned in another post , Red has been a star this spring. He is still learning the nuances of the position. (picking up blitzes). Remember he's been a WR his entire life. Blue is just pure talent and would probably be a starter in a lot of programs.
Baxter should still be in HS and has a ways to go but camp observers believe he'll be #2 in the fall.

It's going to be an interesting fall camp. Insiders believe that most likely that after the "top" 2 backs. At least two of the three (Red, Blue and Robinson ) will portal out by next spring.

Looking ahead, let's not forget that we are on track to get our top 2 rb targets in '24 if things hold.
