OG Patrick Hudson (Jun 29, 2016 COMMIT)

The details have come out today from Higdon, on why it was Briles who announced on NSD morning that Hudson was going to Baylor. Higdon brought out his "all I want to tell you about 2016 recruiting" epic (17k words or whatever!) that he had promised, at Horns Digest. It's a paysite, but people have copied it in multiple forums, so I guess it is okay to put in a snippet here.

It seems his HS coach was at his house the night before, pushing hard for the NLI for Baylor. He got Hudson and Mom to fill it up, and apparently sign too, though it is not clear if Hudson was aware that it was all final. It appears that the coach had faxed it to Baylor without his knowledge before he even got up, which is why Briles tweeted and made it official. It seems Hudson thought he had time till the morning to mull over it. We all felt it was bush league of Briles to tweet it and take the moment away from Hudson then, and it seems that is exactly what happened. Briles is a piece of you know what.

But having said that, this may also be a bit of exaggeration. Higdon himself said that it does not mean Hudson was necessarily ready to sign with Texas by morning (though he feels Hudson felt more pro-Texas by then; which matches the account of others like Burton who said Silsbee HS sources seemed to feel that too). Anyway, it doesn't mean he would have come to us, but he was not given the time he thought he had, to make the decision. We all felt something was fishy when it was not Hudson but Briles who tweeted on his decision.

I can imagine the coach saying "just to be safe, give me an NLI to BU, and I can send it out from my fax machine. If I don't hear that you changed your mind, maybe I can anyway send it out for you" (and then he sent it right at 7 am, the earliest when it can be sent as per the rules, without even checking with Hudson on any change of mind!). I am just making up a potential scenario, that's all :) ... Or maybe his Mom was okay with it and didn't want her son vacillating in the last minute, and let him sleep. Who knows!

Anyway, Briles is a piece of you-know-what, for sure.

I am not sure if the said coach was the Silsbee Head coach (?) who is supposed to have once been Briles roommate or something in college... Not sure.

Of course Hudson wouldn't say anything, even if he felt he got played and felt upset at not getting the time till morning that he thought he had. It was also not like he hated Baylor or anything. After all he had signed the NLI. He will only keep quiet, as he wouldn't want to upset his future coach right off the bat now.

But., how sad! Did I say that Briles was a piece of you-know-what?

I posted the joke I saw somewhere "if Hudson says NO to bailor, would they take him anyway?"

It turns out that Hudson was not given a chance to say NO, and they just did it.

Moral of that story is "never" sign a contract for anything, unless you want that contract or LOI to go in effect.

Briles is not a good person, that seems obvious and he probably knew the HS coach was going to try and get a LOI from Hudson and at least one parent.

Still know what a contract contains and the ramifications possible before signing it. If Hudson doesn't know better, then his parents should. It may have been a low thing to do, but still, in the end this is on Hudson and his mom.

If his mom was in on it and got her son to sign, then it's on her. I would hope a high school senior would know what signing the LOI could bring about.

If this is the way it went down, the Texas High School Coaches Association should publicly reprimand the coach with Briles mentioned as a co-conspirator.

It sounds pretty much like these "adults" are very pushy. It's unethical to me. HOWEVER, that post above does have a few comments like, "...this may also be a bit of exaggeration" and "I am just making up a potential scenario, that's all..." I guess there's enough hedging about the facts that makes it hard to really know what to believe. But the tweet by Briles does smell fishy.

Exactly, bystander. I was deliberately making it clear that we don't know the truth, in the post above. All we can agree on, like you point out, was that we had all felt the tweet by Briles to clearly smell fishy. We felt it immediately then, and so when this story came out, it made sense to us that something must have happened here. Exactly what it was, is unclear. What I don't know is about how upset Hudson is, about it. He just may not be upset at all, for all we know. Higdon didn't say that he knew for a fact that Hudson was upset about it. But it seems very probable that Briles did pull out some sort of strong-arm tactics here, and that was clear from his tweet.

I would think it didn't sit well with him if that's what went down; even if he wanted to go to Baylor. He was being controlled and maybe he learned something about life right there. But I have a son who tends to let me do everything for him and he's 19 so it's possible he was the kind of kid who defaults to whatever a strong-minded adult advises. Being 6'4", 325 lbs tends to make us think they are as big mentally as physically. I always have to remind myself of that fact.

Per ESPN, Silsbee FB Coach Bobby Mcgallion played with Briles at UH. http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfrecruiting/on-the-trail/insider/post?id=68261

IMHO Hudson was 100% Baylor all along and was just trolling us with all the cryptic, burnt orange tinted tweets. Kids like him love intrigue and attention.

Actually the recruiting reporters seem to unanimously vouch for that not being the case. They all say that Hudson is a genuine kid, who just would not troll anybody. He had never done any such things on twitter either. He did have legitimate interest in Texas and he really liked coach Strong too. He had too much pressure from some BU supporters on him (with Mark Henry playing a late counter-attack supporting us) and in the end BU won out. It did get close and he may have even started liking us a bit better in the end after the late OV, but I believe that he was not able to put sufficient preference gap for Texas over BU for him to break the earlier commitment to Briles (and withstand pressure from his HS coach etc).

This^^^ Once a contract is signed, in Texas, it is in force and it is well settled law in our state anyway, that "a person who signs a contract is deemed to have read and understood the terms it contains and agrees to be bound thereby." Still, it was a ******** move by his HS coach.

After a long and arduous journey... HEEZA HORN!

The nation's #2 OG (247 Composite) joins fellow Bailor escapees, Devin and Donovan Duvernay and JP Urquidez as they chose to graze on The 40 Acres together.

This closes out an awesome class and moves us nationally from #11 on February 3 to #7 today!

Now Charlie has the # 6 or 7 class in the land. To think one year ago, many fans were in a panic and many outsiders were burying him for not being able to recruit.
Now we need to see the results on the field and I think we will.

I still hold that 2017 will be the "Year of the Horns" :bevo:

Yeah, all the nervous nellies are no longer posting.

Per HS:

First, I love me some country strong big bodies because you just can't teach that natural strength they are blessed with. Secondly, he isn't even close to his ceiling as a player and if placed with the right coach has a chance to be a heck of a player.

I will say that I'm not sure Hudson is destined to be a left tackle at the next level, but I definitely can see him as a right tackle or getting kicked inside as a guard, which could be the faster route to the field.

He's an absolutely mauler as a run blocker, but is a little rough around he edges technique wise as a pass blocker. He bends well, he has great feet, and you don't see him off balance a lot on tape, so he checks all of those boxes for me.

Simply put, humans his size should not be able to move the way he does. In space Hudson moves like a dancing bear. He’s incredibly light on his feet and has the ability to engage defenders in the open field. He can also pull to open up lanes on counter plays.

He shows good flexibility and coordination, but he sometimes gets caught reaching and over extends himself. He comes off the ball quickly with fast hands and incredible strength.

Against the run he is an impact drive blocker capable of carrying his man down field and putting him on his back. When pass blocking he sometimes gets lazy with his feet, which causes lapses in technique and consistency. Hudson is at his best in the screen game where he can lead the way out front.

Most think he’s destined to play guard at the next level, and while he does think he has some Larry Allen in his game, his size and quickness also make him an ideal match at tackle.

This Oline has some real potential. (Understates the obvious) I do remember the 04 and 05 line. Those guys wln consistently in the trenches and were big boys.

This team becoming more 'sec ready' than some portend to be :rolleyes1:

2.87 points out of ~280, or about 1% separate these three places on 247sports

#5 Meat Chicken, 283.18
#6 Ole Miss, 281.69
#7 Texas, 280.31

Shows UM one 5-Star
Shows Ole Miss three 5-Stars
Texas no 5-Stars... still wihin 2.87 pts of #5 spot
Why isn't Hudson showing as 5-Stars? Thought he was.

Anyway sixteen 4-Star players in the class.
Did some research a year ago... in his four recruiting classes at Louisville, Charlie recruited a grand total of twelve 4-Stars. (Think Mack had 52 to 54 during same span). Some say that the number of stars can change depending on which college a player goes to, still...

Fair to say this class is right at a Top 5 national class.
