Official: Harbaugh Suspended

Still think the NCAA is toothless, so we’ll see how all this cheating plays out.
Agreed, but if the evidence is overwhelming then the penalty severity goes in reverse and the NCAA has to do something more severe than if the evidence was paltry.

Of all schools that DON'T need to cheat I would have put Michigan near the top.
Not sure that I agree. Harbaugh was Persona non grata and rumored to be on the verge of being fired, until he started beating Ohio State. Coincidentally, that’s about when the cheating appeared to have started.

I see your point. But before it came out about Harbaugh would you have said Michigan was likely to cheat? As far as I know they had no history of cheating and were in the all time top 5 with wins.

The committee has one heck of a dilemma if Michigan goes undefeated and wins the Big Ten championship.

Most of us assume that the NCAA, a toothless organization, will do nothing. I actually believe that they will act, but not for 12 to 24 months. Hope I’m wrong. So it will come down to the discretion and the judgment of the committee.

Wouldn’t we love to be a fly on the wall during that discussion? Some will argue that it’s not at their discretion to make a judgment about Michigan, thus equivocating. They will defer to the NCAA who almost certainly will not have acted.

Others will observe, correctly, that if Michigan wins the championship, that victory will be tainted. In my judgment, that will be the issue. There would be no way to avoid the argument — by probably a majority of the college football world — that Michigan, if they were to win, would have done so by cheating. So does the committee want to be linked to such a legacy?

My faith in mankind, and in organizations like the CFP Committee to do the right thing, is not high. And if I’m not mistaken, Michigan’s AD is on that committee.

Hopefully, if it comes down to such a decision, I will be pleasantly surprised.

Very true. To me, this is an indictment on the character of Jim Harbaugh. Distractions aside, all roads lead to him.

What I struggle to understand is, how a university with the history, legacy, and reputation of Michigan, would be willing to turn a blind eye to the situation for the sake of winning football games, and possibly a championship. But then again, we saw the same thing at Penn State with Joe Pa. It was shocking.

I do not believe that Texas would handle such a situation in this manner. As suggested by how they handled the Beard incident, I believe they would do the right thing, even if it temporarily damaged their football program.

This "To me, this is an indictment on the character of Jim Harbaugh. Distractions aside, all roads lead to him."

I imagine most Michigan grads are sick over this.

Best Scenario?

MI beats tOSU.
MI suspended from participation in the CFP.

I'm worried this is our path to the CFP. Otherwise, it could be
Ohio State
Washington/Oregon winner
Georgia/Alabama winner (no way they leave out a 1-loss SEC champ)
FSU/Louisville winner (Louisville might not pass us, but they might with a blow out win and us squeaking by someone like OSU)

I think we miss out. It happens sometimes. Too many undefeated and good one-loss teams. 12 team playoff should have started this year lol

“Assuming we win out,” this is the way I see our path.

1. If FSU loses, we’re in. That’s because tOSU/MI cancel out, and WA/OR cancel out. For this not to happen, Alabama would have to beat Georgia, and, the committee would have to place Bama above Texas, a team to whom they lost, at home. I just don’t see that happening.

2. Oregon State beats Oregon Friday, then Oregon beats WA. In that scenario, I can’t see Oregon going with two losses, or Washington going over Texas, because WA would have lost the CCG. Again, the B1G would only send one team, and again, Alabama doesn’t jump Texas.

3. Somehow Iowa beats the previously undefeated B1G team from the East. Would the committee select a non-conference champion with one loss, either Michigan or Ohio State, over Texas. I don’t think they would.

Beyond these scenarios, it gets more complicated, and less likely.

Next two weeks:

Florida Beats Florida State (QB out)
Ohio State beats Michigan
Alabama beats Auburn
Texas beats Tech
Georgia beats Alabama
Texas beats Ok State
Washington beats Oregon

Playoffs:
Georgia
Ohio State
Washington
Texas
