Next Coach

Horns lose to Arkansas in OT

The strategy in the second half? Give to Johnson and get everyone else out of the way and it almost worked.

There is zero coaching going on.

Texas is now 16-12 and 5-10 in the SEC. Embarrassing.

If we can figure out a way to win 2 of our last 3 we would end 18-13, 7-11. I don't see how that gets us in.

The guards were terrible. The announcers were down on Kaluma for missing shots, but Pope and Mark were just wretched. Maybe it's a matter of Weaver being hurt that they're forced to play a 50% Mark, but this stretch has been awful outside of Johnson. What a waste.

Consistently inconsistent and consistently underperforming. That defines this years team.

I trust CDC on this and one thing he has shown is he doesn't run from coaches he runs to coaches. That means Terry will be back unless CDC identifies a better successor, lines him up, and has him ready before moving Terry on. I like Terry, he seems like a good guy who does things the right way, but he sure seems in over his head.

It's not like our erstwhile savior is lights out at the moment. Unranked. Destroyed by Auburn

I think last night was the nail in the coffin for both our tourney hopes and Terry's future. The only way we get into the dance is to get to the SEC Championship game, but I'd wager we are one-and-done.

Unfortunately, Texas will not get a chance to play Texas so one and done seems inevitable.

Hire someone that knows how to teach a big man how to finish when he gets the ball inside. I guess that would require having a big man.
Exactly. ^^^

I hear a lot about Terry being a very good recruiter, but there are some gaping holes in this team that have not been addressed by his recruiting.

1. A competent big inside banger who can consistently score from down low; and defend the hoop down low.

2. Also, an above average big forward who consistently cleans the boards and scores enough to support the star shooting guard.

3, Also, a point guard who works well with the big men on the pick and roll ending in dunks.

So, getting these holes filled in the portal has not happened since Beard's guys left. Terry has not shown--to me anyway--the ability to put together a roster that can win consistently against top competition.

I was devastated when we lost Beard.

In my opinion he was a once in a lifetime coach that could have been our Dean Smith, Coach K, Bobby Knight, et al.

After Beard was fired I thought Rodney did an admiral job filling in, but to be honest I thought, with the talent we had, we should have been playing for a championship last year. The reason we didn’t was coaching.

I understand after stepping up and keeping the train on the rails we had to offer Rodney the job, but the reality is I never felt he would be successful or that he was a realistic long term solution.

Rodney Terry is a .540 coach 196–167

He has never won a conference, but has won two conference tournament championships.

2 of his 3 head coaching jobs were promotions after the previous head coach had been dismissed. The only head coaching job he was recruited for as a head coach lasted 3 years and resulted in .435 record and no greater than a 5th place conference ranking.

Rodney Terry is a great assistant coach, recruiter, and by most accounts human being, but is not a major program head coach.

It is time to start looking.
:e-muscle:

Anyone professing rt being good at something is based on emotion and not facts. When beard crapped the bed, terry said it was him that put the team together but thats almost impossible to get behind. He does not instill confidence in anyone who knows basketball. Again CDC was stuck after beard. A steady documented decline should be enough to move this along so we get to the next chapter. Someone else mentioned the tech coach and I am all for it. He does appear to be a winner and it would thoroughly violate the morons in lubbock so by all means, make it happen!!! lol

It still all boils down to coaching. These guys have no offense and has not been put in the right position to be successful on this team. It’s no way these transfers were successful at their previous schools that came from an offense. Come here and have a “drastic drop” off this year. It has to be something else at this point that’s going on behind close doors is the reason these guys are not playing well and responding to RT by now.

I agree there are some gaping holes. Although there’s holes, it’s no improvement at this point which is the problem and that’s coaching. What would this team look like with a good offense that put the players in position to be successful? It makes me wonder why some of the guys left last year. Is it the coach or coaching?🤔

The pick and roll will work “IF” you practice on it, no matter what guards are on the floor. Our “SPACING” and plays are horrible which leads to the iso ball play.

We will see what happens after the season. There are definitely decisions to be made.

Great point, FWHORN. So far CDC has an excellent record on coaching hires. We must assume he has a plan in place and will move on that plan at the appropriate time.

Agreed - that has to be the assumption, given CDC's track record. But dang, he has to be cringing watching this middling team, especially given what was invested in the sparking new arena.

Terrible game so far against UGA. They should just fire Terry now, let Haith take them into the offseason, and call it a year.

Only 2 Texas players have made baskets with 5:26 remaining.

This team is embarrassing. Have they all just decided where they go in the portal already, so they are phoning it in? Best result this year is for them to lose out, so they don’t even make the NIT. Just call it a season.

For the most part if the Head Fb Coach is on the hot seat, he has no problem firing the offensive or defensive coordinators to take the heat off a bit.
Is it different in basketball?
Terry is responsible as the head coach, but there has to be an assistant in charge of the defense. Offense also. Just wondering what coaches are responsible for those areas.
There has been little to no improvement all season on either end of the floor.
Oh well, really doesn’t matter at this point of the season.

I'll admit I turned it off at halftime, went back and just looked at the stats. Tre Johnson literally hit only 3 free throws and no field goals in the second half?! How do you go from scoring 39 points to taking 7 shots in an entire game? Did Georgia have some magic defense they switched to?

The Moody Center is great for concerts. And we get a few Spurs games. It's not all bunk.

It was FREE; in fact it was more than free.

Built on University property at no cost to the school, then Chris got the got the Moody family to pony up (pun intended) $150 million to put their name on it.
