Newsome Is Committing Now

Call me crazy but I still don't think it is over with Newsome. The decision was so hard for him that I believe it was a toss up. But normally I'd think that's the end of it. But with his Parents wanting him at Texas I believe there is always a chance between now and then that he could change his mind. But it could end up he won't have a choice if we fill the spots up. The spots are going to be filling fast soon.

I agree with I35...think this decision was very difficult for him and will expect him to reconsider and commit to Texas soon;; if a spot remains open....that is a tough decision for a 17 yr old especially when the relationship to family is so strong; however, he may have made this decision based on inside info from coaches regarding spots remaining / no room.

LC, no, we didn't withdraw the offer from Newsome. No way. If we did, he would not have announced that it was down to Texas and UCLA to end his 2-week "reflection period" 8 days ago.

We have not pulled a ship from anybody (except in the "mutual parting" with Louis Brown last weekend). We may have gone a little cold on him and did not contact him much during 3 weeks because we didn't want to rush him to decide when we did not have a WR coach in place and we were unsure of how many spots we would have either, that's all.

LC had asked the question that went unanswered...

But there is some smoke again (though not all that strong) that Ryan Newsome may again be in play. There were multiple sources that said that Newsome's was indeed a last-minute snap decision. Apparently, he had called UT and said that he was committing to us that morning, and then called an hour later and said he wasn't (or might not). So this went back and forth and even his parents didn't seem to know whom he would pick, as every clearly saw in the commitment video.

Anyway, the rumor is that he had called UT right the next day and asked if he still had a spot and Charlie couldn't anymore guarantee it, because by then the Lodge and Murray thing (which was 2 days before the Newsome commit) was getting serious and we had to reserve spots. I have a hunch that Warren, Soso, or Mack had also become more of possibilities at just the right time (and Burt may have silently recommitted, fearing the spots going away). So we were struggling for spots. That is a rumor out there.

Now that we don't need to keep spots for Murray, and probably Lodge too (if the staff knows anything), and Jamil Johnson just cleared a spot anyway. So, we do have at least one spot to give.

Another doubt at that time was that speedy WR Dominique Reed might have been promised an offer and was expected to commit too. We just wouldn't take 5 WRs, unless the 5th was Lodge. As it turns out, his JC paperwork still needs to clear or something, and we don't know if he is an immediate offer and commit anymore. So we are still at 3 WRs (McNeal, Burt, G.Johnson). If Ryan wants a spot now, he can have it for sure.

So, there is again some mild smoke that Ryan Newsome may be back in play. I doubt it. But you never know. Keep an eye. I will take him, no questions, if he wants to come back to where he belongs.

^^ Whoa, that is interesting Dion. When I wrote the above piece, I didn't know that UT was actively pursuing him hard! Okay, so there is definite smoke now!

Random speculation: could be that Charlie knows about the remaining commitments, and it’s huge, like a legit championship-level class coming together. Maybe he’s in a position now to tell Newsome, hey, you better get on board with this cause it’s gon be good.

Something like that.

/speculation

All speculation is that Lodge is not coming, and probably going to Ole Miss (thought a decision by his HS coach to come to UT may help, it might not be enough). I would think though that if we know that Lodge is coming, we just may not go for a 5th WR.

But if Charlie knows that Locksley is coming, I am sure he will tell Ryan that, to avoid him getting scared about the QB depth chart. That is probably the only item that may matter to him, as knowing about Warren or Soso would change anything. Anyway, Newsome definitely knows that this class is already pretty salty in talent. So we will see...

I think the player in this class who most reminds me of Newsome is Tristan Houston, a shorter guy who does a lot of good with the ball in his hands because of speed, elusiveness and change of direction. The Horns have recruited some great tall receivers for the outside, but could use another slot/wing guy. Jambo, even though he's listed as a running back and is over 6 feet, could also do well as a slot guy with his speed and elusiveness.

I've watched film of Kirk Johnson in the last day or two and see him as a great every down back, fast enough to break it, but tough enough to get yards between tackles. He won't succumb to arm tackles. Burt, Johnson and McNeal are tall receivers and Collin Johnson already committed for 2016 is really tall, with incredible hands and jump ball skills.

Not sure who we end up with, but I want one of Jambo and Newsome. Warren and Brosette are fine backs, but we only need one of those guys, not both.

It seems Newsome had tweeted "#NSD2015" earlier today. Now, that would be unusual for a well-committed player to do, as the signing day is not that important for them. Even more curiously, he deleted the tweet in no time too. Maybe he does not want to give any indication yet that he is still thinking about this matter? I guess that is not bad news for us....

As I said in the other thread, William Wilkerson had reported earlier today that he had talked directly to Ryan Newsome about the rumors of a flip from him to us. As the premium content at Horns Digest is by now reported in other forums, I can say that Newsome answer was "not sure yet", whatever that means. Definitely not a denial

Right after Kai Locksley committed, Ryan Newsome tweeted just now -

@NewBoi17 Congrats to my homie Kai! Boy a baller.

Highly unusual for a commit to another school to comment on a QB who is not even a Texas friend of his, don't you think? This thing is beginning to look good on Newsome.

What is filtering through today is that it is unclear if Strong and Newsome have been in touch. Unsure if it is because one side or the other doesn't want to talk. But nobody seems to say that any issue has developed between the two sides, though. So things could still happen and there is interest on possibly both sides. But since it hasn't heated up yet, I guess we reduce the expectation of a flip from UCLA. May be a 33% chance for a flip, as opposed to a 55% yesterday (in my mind), as of now.

And NEWSOME has flipped to us!!!! Charlie!!!!!

Great to flip one each from Oregon and UCLA on signing day!!!
