May/June/JULY Football

Having been injured since Thanksgiving, it's nice to see KJ juicin' on those jackrabbit joints! Can't wait to see him on the field again.

While OL Patrick Hudson is still trying to get his release from Bailor, TFB is reporting that a family member says if the release comes, Hudson is looking to land at bammy, Georgia, aggy, or Texas.

Another source says Texas is his first choice.

DT Kendell Jones failed to qualify academically and, therefore, will not be able to enroll at bammy – will probably go JUCO somewhere.

During his recruitment, Jones looked like he would be committing to Texas for a while. The freakish lineman, nicknamed "The Hulk," was considered by some to be more of a project than an immediate contributor. Still, I would have liked for Charlie to have flipped him. Then again, if he couldn't qualify for bammy....

Coach Pat Moorer was issued a drool cup Monday morning as summer conditioning began for the Longhorns football team.

Mrs. Moorer was quoted as saying, "I only see 'Pattycake' smile twice a year – today and the start of Winter Workouts. He's so cute when he does it!"

Southall and Fowler on campus?

I was wondering the same thing.

Nope.

Per Hornsports:

DT Marcel Southall might need a summer session, but it appears he’s just one class short and should be in good shape to make it in. Southall double signed at a JUCO to cover his bases, but we learned today that with a bit of work he should be able to qualify for enrollment in the second summer session.

On the bad (or mixed) news front, we’ve heard some things about Erick Fowler that don’t bode well for his chances.

Early on we were told that Fowler had a bit of work to do, but he should be on target to finish up in the summer. Yesterday we were given some mixed signals on Fowler’s chances. One source indicated that Fowler was merely trying to up a test score against his GPA on a sliding scale. A second source indicated that Fowler’s situation was far more perilous than that.

Frankly, the information is so scattered that we are having a hard time getting an accurate read on the situation.

Southall and Fowler have some work to do. Southall most likely in best position to be in by August. Fowler 50/50?

E$PN interviewed 15 BIG12 coaches following National Signing Day to get their thoughts on all the "12" teams recruits. An unnamed coach said this about the 'Horns:

"Texas cleaned house on the defensive line. If all those kids qualify, their D-line coach will be smoking cigarettes and relaxing on the sideline for the next three, four years."

My buddy was at a dinner event that Shaka and Charlie attended. Charlie told a couple of stories, but I liked hearing this one the most. A few weeks ago, Charlie received a call from Shane at 10:30 on a Friday night.

SB: "Hey coach, where are you?"

CS: "Well, it's Friday night. Where do you think I am? I'm at home."

SB: "Do you think you could come open the door to the indoor facility for Collin and me? I want to throw."

CS: "Why don't you go over to the rec fields? They're lit."

SB: "We were there, but they just kicked us out and turned off the lights."

Charlie tried to find someone to let them in the indoor facility. Shane called back a little later and said never mind, he and Collin found a place.

Start him, Charlie!

Like I said before, the young man has real A/V talent; just hope he's working even harder on his FB skills. So far, he's not being mentioned much even in projected 2-deeps.

Per TFB:

I continue to check in with sources regarding 2016 Baylor signee, Parrish Cobb. By now you all know that Cobb has requested a release from his NLI. I’ve received some conflicting information but I’ll lay it out for you. Enjoy…

Source 1 and 2 (Texas side) – I spoke to two sources on the Texas side and they confident. One source said Texas has about a “70% chance” of landing Cobb.

Source 3 and 4 (Oklahoma side) – I also spoke with two Oklahoma sources. They are even more confident than the Texas side. Both sources I spoke to on the Oklahoma side fully expect Cobb to end up at Oklahoma.

Source 5 (Waco/Family Friend): A source close to the family told me that the family likes Oklahoma and Georgia. The reason being is they would like Parrish to get further away from Waco than Austin or even Ft Worth (though the source mentioned there is interest in TCU and I’m told by a TCU source that they have a spot for Cobb).

Source 6 (Waco/Family Friend): Another source close to the family is adamant that while Oklahoma may be somewhat in it, the two main schools the Cobbs are interested in are Texas and Georgia.

All these sources are solid in their proximity to either the family or the programs so I have no reason to doubt them. However,… there is a possibility that there is some difference between what Parrish may want and what his family may want.

Those two spots are fairly far away from anything....

Per Hornsports:

Parrish Cobb - We were told that Cobb started evaluating his options the moment the news was announced that Art Briles would be terminated. Cobb is down to Texas, TCU, and Oklahoma, where he was previously committed, and each school has something working in their favor. [Coach] Clay Jennings is a Waco native, and he’s close with Cobb that bodes well for Texas in this race. Information we received today indicates that Oklahoma is the most likely destination for the former Sooner commit.

*UPDATE: Cobb’s father has been outspoken about obtaining his son’s release, and rightly so since it was promised to him on the condition of a meeting with new Baylor coach Jim Grobe. The word last week was that Cobb would be headed to Oklahoma once he was released, but I was told yesterday that Texas is back in play, and Cobb is starting to warm to the idea.

The reason I’m told, is that some of the incoming freshmen are doing their best sales pitch to get Cobb to Austin. I was told S Brandon Jones is leading the charge to land Cobb, along with his cousin, CB Eric Cuffee. Combine that with Cobb’s reported love for Clay Jennings, and Texas might be able to secure themselves the best pure cover corner from last year’s class.

-------

JP Urquidez – Information on this front is all over the place. We were told initially that Texas would not have interest in the big offensive lineman, but several Texas coaches recently started following him on twitter. We will see where this one ends up, but we think Texas would be in good shape if they re-enter the race for Urquidez.

Summer conditioning on Monday means it’s time for position battles to pick back up.

The most intriguing battles are at wide receiver, along the offensive line and at defensive tackle where groups of players at all three position groups will look to assert themselves and claim spots in the two-deep. Pecking orders need to get established at those positions.

In terms of the individual battles, the best one might be the aforementioned head-to-head at safety where Jason Hall will try to hold off DeShon Elliott at safety. Charles Omenihu and Breckyn Hager are expected to put pressure on Bryce Cottrell and Naashon Hughes. Brandon Jones could do the same to Dylan Haines at safety.

I don't care who wins the DB fight as long as they know how to cover (a big improvement over 2015). Until that happens Texas has cannot use the DBU moniker.

Boo and the Blitz

Buechele06a.jpg

For Texas QB Shane Buechele to navigate the 2016 schedule he’s going to need particular skills and a knowledge of how the league likes to blitz and attack in order to keep his head above water when opponents throw complicated looks and pressures at him. His ability to do so much may prove to be one of the major themes of the season.

Buechele is in a better place than most to try and take on the blitz as a true freshman in part due to the system of offense he’ll be asked to run. The spacing and tempo in spread offenses are a natural deterrent against a team trying to get too cute with complex solutions on defense.

However, over the last several years defenses have had time to develop enough variety in their anti-spread packages to be able to bring disguises and pressures. They’ve also gotten better at communicating their calls in from the sideline and developing their players to understand how to survive on the field. What’s more, they’ve all invested a great deal of time and effort into finding solutions for doing so against the veer and shoot.

Buechele will also be aided against the blitz by the fact that he’ll be surrounded by some really effective weapons, including a power running game, while going up against a league that doesn’t appear to be armed to the teeth with great pass-rushers in 2016.

Texas’ 2016 opponents will have little choice but to sneak DBs into the box on standard downs in order to minimize the risk of ‘Forewarrened’ getting loose into the 2nd level with a full head of steam.

The best test that Buechele will undoubtedly be taught to read is the rotation and positioning of the weak safety on the boundary. Whether he rotates down into the box, deep into the middle, or deep on the hash can tell the QB a good deal about where the extra run defender is coming from and how to attack him.

Texas is going to present a slightly different version of this offense against the league next year from what they’re used to seeing from Baylor. Buechele and the WRs are younger, less experienced in working together, and more vulnerable to tactics that Baylor has been shredding for some time. But the Longhorns also have a more fearsome run game that presents its own unique challenges.

Opponents are going to throw a lot at young Buechele and bring heavy disguises, man-blitzes, or the “all or nothing” approach and he’ll have to prove he can handle each one in order to get Texas to eight wins. That’s why it’s essential that Texas’ summer seven-on-seven drills are productive. Simple spring ball is over and Buechele is going to have to graduate early again next fall.
